I've recently been outted as a closet geek by friends and family: It's a fact I'm going to have come to terms with, it feels great to be out, (I just need to locate my nearest geek bar: startrek convetion perhaps?). They said my love of gaming, sci-fi, fantasy and all things star wars deffinetly puts me in the Donny Darko catagory...
I'm wondering I'm I the only one who has been outted as a closet geek?

Why would you hide being a geek? I mean come on, what's wrong with it, in many ways it actually enhances your intelligence (But then again, it also decreases it). And the Star Wars thing, argh, why does everyone love Star Wars? I think it's horrible.

I don't like stereotypes, they are for the narrow-minded. There's nothing wrong with being considered a 'geek', the only ones that say so do it because they don't like people that are different from themselves. They are narrow-minded. They like to stereotype. Did I mention I don't like stereotypes and that I think they are for the narrow-minded?

Actually I'd like to contradict myself and say that not all stereotyping is bad.

Geek used to be an insult. Now, it's basically a compliment.

I believe that the dictionary definition of a geek (Or at least the ye olde one) is something along the lines of
"a circus performer who entertains the crowd by eating glass and/or biting the head off a live chicken."

lol, you sure you want to be a geek?

Geek is not an insult.

I have geeky parts - hence I'm here, a game make hobby, programming, 3D modelling are all geeky hobbies, but what does that matter? You're doing what you enjoy most - of course it doesn't mean you have to only enjoy geeky stuff either. My life isn't dedicated to the computer and the same for most people here, but we'd most certainly call ourselves geeks, yet not fall into the stereotype and do plenty of non-geeky stuff, heck some of us actually do sports!

Stereotyping isn't always a good thing.

For the love of god people, stop repeating stuff like "you has jokes" and the word "epic" which has now lost all meaning because it's so overused.

Why would we do that? Its BECAUSE these words and phrases are so overused that we use them.

The epic presence of the jokes you has is so epic that just looking into its pure epic'ness would explode your epic eyes, and even though your eyes are epic they would still explode in an epic fashion. How epic!

All that because you has jokes.

No, because you're overusing them yourself because you can't come up with anything funny to say. Used occasionally and in the right context they might still sound funny if you hadn't have watered the meaning down by using them all the time in an effort to be funny.

Who said I was making an effort to be funny? MAYBE I was trying to annoy you for insulting me, in which case, you would have fallen right into my trap.
I was NOT trying to annoy you, just exchange a few harmless insults all in good fun, but I'm just saying.

The point of that post was to show that I didn't believe that the machine would make mini black holes and/or destroy the earth. I was making light of all the scientists who are freaking out and saying we're going to blow the world up.

But, in all seriousness, dude? Lighten up. This is the social board. It is MEANT to be goofy and fun. If I had done something like that on a topic asking for help, or having a serious question, yeah, that would make me a jerk. But it was just a topic about how we're going to kill ourselves. LIGHTEN UP, you are ruining everyone else's internet fun.

People who say "you has xxxx" or pluralizes everything (internets, etc.) are not funny. It wasn't even funny for a minute, and will not make people think you are current.

And as for being a geek, I don't think it's "in" but never really considered it a "coming out" kind of thing. I imagine all the people who know you already knew you are an egghead, just they didn't want to tell you in person. You "coming out" of the closet so to speak enables them to laugh at you in front of your face instead of behind your back

People don't laugh in my face for being a geek, they seem to kind of praise me for "knowing so much about computers" or whatever. It's quite fun actually.

I suppose 'epic' you 'you has' and 'internets' is getting a bit old - something things needed be over-used otherwise they lose their edge. Like excessive Rick Rolling, Rick Rolling can have it's laugh, but if people over do it, then it gets tedius, hence people start complaining (when things get too old, it's likely to be getting on somebody's nerves) Just a point in order to be considerate to readers.(Somethings are painstaking to read)

Quote: "People, excluding most women. If you've already got one, hang on to her. "

Hehe - though I don't think I've been laughed at for a geeky side, even by women. Chavvy tarts on the street have shouted at me for my dreads and been incredibly annoying, but nothing to do with being a geek thank god. Besides I have a saying for people like that and well I don't want to get noob slapped for saying it.

Well we don't have women in Sweden, all we got are hot blonde super models... Because that's what everyone says right?
EDIT: Wait, Norway is next to Sweden... So that means you get either twice as hot women or half as hot. Don't ask me why it is that way, you wouldn't be able to handle the truth. So what is it? Twice as hot, of half as hot.

And for the record, I've always thought of that stereotype of swedish women being "hot" odd because one, I don't really start liking girls because of looks, personality is way more important to me, and because I've never thought of Swedish women as hot. But seemingly after being on vacation in some other countries... Some part of me understands it and some part don't.

Seriously, how many times do you have to mention that? You're a proud Swede, I get it, but ease on the...."patriotism" or what in the world this is called.

Sweden got its share of ugly women too, like every other country. Altough there is no such thing in Norway. That's just a fact, and if you think you have spotted one, it's not a real Norwegian.

I'm a closet geek. A major closet geek. Only my close friends know I'm a geek. But all the people at my school just think me as a redneck lol.

Personally I don't like being a geek. I have nothing against geeks or being a geek, but it doesn't seem right to me. I used to be one of the jocks (believe it or not, I don't care.) I still feel like a jock but facing the truth, I'm pretty geeky.

Anyways, like several people have said, it's not insulting to be called a geek. Geeks are the people with all the money and everyone knows, money CAN buy happiness.

Why does it matter? Why do you care what people think? People don't have to be classified into categories like jocks, geeks, preps, punks, etc. I know several people who have characteristics from several of them.

I don't know what a prep is, but I tell my girlfriends that I visit this site. To clarify, friends that are girls. They know I'm geeky and seem to like it.

It's not like people will stop liking you if they know about a site you visit at times. If they do, they aren't worthy of being your friend from the start. Speak your mind, act yourself. Use it as a filter to find the true friends.

I don't care at all that I'm a geek, and nobody I know cares. Most people (including girls) think I'm funny, nice (mostly), and don't care at all that I'm not terribly athletic and love computers/video games. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't wanna be a geek, then you are, as Agent Dink said, ashamed of who you are, and shouldn't be a geek in the first place.

90% of statistics are completely inaccurate.
