Ok, i came accross this benchmark on toms hardware.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/gaming-graphics-charts-q3-2008/Crysis-v1-21,747.html

Everyone knows that toms hardware is a respectable benchmark site. But look at the diffrence on crysis between a £400 280GTX and a £100 8800GTS. 2 fps!!!! What the hell is all the fuss about? Crysis is the beast of beasts when it comes to graphical benchmarks, So why is the 280GTX so hyped and expensive? For 2fps? come on.

I thought to myself maybe the benchmarks are diffrent in age, so they used difffrent drivers, but then the 8800 would have used older drivers, and be even less efficient that its "Fullest".

Its all a little confusing really.

Nearly all of those results are wrong, was he awake when he did this?

How do you know they are wrong? I have an 8800GTS OC to 600mhz, and crysis 1.2 does run at 30-40fps on "High".

Because of the settings for that benchmark (0xAA, 0xAF). See this, and you'll get what I mean:

Wait one sec, what kind of benchmark is this, don't know if you saw this, but at the top it say's:
Fraps/Contact (1280x1024, 0xAA, Trilinear, High Quality)

Why the hell would they do a benchmark with Fraps on capped at 30 fps, theres no way of knowing how fast the card can actually go.

Edit: Mahoney, you beat me to it.

Ok that second benchmark makes more sence. Obviously its better for higher resolution gaming. You can set Fraps to 60FPS, i have it. Also if it was capped at 30fps, why are the benchmark results over 30fps?

Y'know, I have no clue. I just did a benchmark test with Fraps and I can't see how you'd work out anything beyond the decimal place or how you would get these results. Gonna do more digging.

Really, not in any of the benchmarks, though the avgframerate does. But still those benchmarks are messed up, just look at that thing.

It's think it is true that the 280 is over-rated a least a little. I still have my geforce 7950GT, but it is about comparable (a little worse though) to a geforce 8800GT (according to a benchmark) because I pretty much got the best one when I got it. I guess you just never know, because there's a lot more to it than just the name of the card.

Yup, the name means nothing. An 8800GT, and a 9800GT is the same other than an extra sli connector for sli. No performance increace.

The only difference is that the 9800 GT has a 55nm core instead of 65nm, which means that it runs cooler(draws in less power), overclocks better and also 2way SLI support, that's it. But oddly enough it's cheaper than the 8800 GT, who knows why, maybe they just want to shift these cards.

On scan, the lowest spec 8800GT has a clock core of 650mhz, the lowest spec 9800gt only has a 600mhz. Also the 9800 has a small, rubish cooler. Thats probably why.

You chose the worst 9800 possible!

You probably (well maybe anyways ) are right about some of those things, guys, but there are other factors too. An 8600 with higher specs (except memory and interface maybe) than my card is lower on the benchmark list. But I'm sick of arguing about this. First it was Mahoney who actually thought his geforce 8600 was better than my geforce 7950gt. But that's another story.

Besides, let's talk about the geforce 9800 gtx+.
