I need a new computer... the one i have now was bought in 2001, and im a minor, and my dad's a stickler, so i don't have any experience in the computer market (i mean, i know how fast the technology goes, but no experience.)
My computer specs right now? i dont really know, but it has an ati-radeon 9250 n 2 gigs of ram. It's also loaded to the brim with un-used software and space taking programs that have never been used. so i never get over 200 fps in the simplest of tasks. For example, the spinning cube tutorial in dbpro? 190 fps.

So, i have a budget of about 1300$. I want a good, solid, gaming computer. Even though my comp sucks, i use it alot for video games, and other programs, including rendering and modeling. I usually just make due with always having the lowest graphics settings, and maybe getting 25-35 fps, or 20 minutes of render time. So, a good graphics card, lots of ram, and a good processor. What i've picked out so far is the Stealth NE:

core 2 duo 8500 processor
4 gigs of kingston ram
nVidia geforce 9800, 1 gig ram

the cost is about 1150$

It sounds good to me, i've looked up the specs of it all, it's in my price range, and the review i've seen looks good.

To me, the price is worth it, from what i've seen, but i need someone else's opinion.

Wow, you can get a SUPER comp for waaaaaaaaaay less!

I paid $390 for these four parts:

quad 2.4 Intel Core 2 Processor
4GB DDR2 1066mhz RAM
320GB Hard Drive
PCIe 2.0 Asus Motherboard

Go here: [href]www.newegg.com[/href] (you do need to be in the US, or go to www.newegg.ca for Canada)

With your graphics card, you can get the computer of your dreams for less than $600 (does depend on how many parts your keeping from your old computer, I kept the power supply, floppy drive (didn't even hook it up though), and CD drive, and of course the peripherals like the screen and keyboard and stuff, but I'm sure it will be much less).

Just set mine up today and it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!

Gah, I wish Newegg would open up an Australian branch... or ship internationally.

I probably wouldn't recommend keeping parts from your old computer if you got 13k to spend.

Might as well not get cheap. Newegg.com if you want to build it yourself, which I'd recommend. Otherwise, newegg does sell prebuilts. This one's nice:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227085

Thinking about it, for that price, you might not be able to build one as cheap

Notice it doens't come with a monitor or speakers, so you'll have to step down a model or two if you need that as well.

Maybe this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883233003

With this monitor:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116014

If you want to build it yourself, this setup is top of the line:

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11508988

It'd be extremely fast for rendering, and great for gaming too. Again, no monitor, so you'd have to supply your own. This one's just a couple bucks away from $1300.

Jerico- That's an awsesome setup. six slots for ddr3 ram? I feel bad not filling em up

So, let me get something straight about DDR ram. 2 gigs of ddr3 ram could handle at a faster rate, what 4 gigs of ddr2 ram could handle at the same time? (err, not an exact ratio, but is that the gist of it?)

And, im not sure if i want a quad core processor. Id rather have a better, duo core processor. I only know of one game thats multi-threaded for 4 cores.

That setup I made more for rendering and raw cpu performance. If you're using Maya, 3ds max, or any multithreaded renderer, you'll be much happier. (If you'd rather focus your cash on higher end game graphics, I can pick something else out. You can probably manage to get a c2d setup with a pair of 9800gtx cards for the same price, although keep in you can always add a second gfx card later.)

That said, the processor I selected for you is crazy fast, so it's probably on par with a core 2 in single or double threaded apps.

Check this out:

As for ddr2 vs ddr3. From what I understand, DDR2 is actually faster when clocked at the same rate. However, ddr3 offers more throughput (it can clock faster) which makes up for the higher latency, so DDR3 comes out on top.

That setup for you I created is faster than any c2d or standard quad setup you can imagine If I had 1300 bucks, that's the setup I'd buy, over the prebuilts we've given.

Looks like an awesome rig to me. Lots of room for expansion, if somehow 4 gigs of ddr3 ram with a GTX graphics card isn't enough, i could get 6 gigs of ddr3 ram and two GTX graphics cards

and 70$ in mail in rebates isn't bad either.

But i noticed that this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231200

had lower latency, and was a bit cheaper.

But, i don't really know what any of the specs mean, the most i've done inside a computer was clean off the dust.

Now all i need to do is get 1,250$

Hmm, now that you mention it, might be best to get three sticks (or 2 sets of 3), then your cpu can take advantage of the triple channel, I'd get this for ram:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227369

Has the lower latency like the gskill, but with 3 sticks instead of 4. A little more expensive, but a 20 dollar mail in rebate

It's 1 gig less ram though, though between 3 and 4 gigs of ram, it won't make much difference!
