I bought my acer laptop about 10months ago and as some of you know i have constantly had problems with it. Here is a list of the problems i have had.

-HyperMemory (no support on this, need XP to remove)
-Overheating (on flat surface with lots of ventilation room)
-Graphics performance had decreased by 30fps since when i bought it, i now got 10-20fps in GTASA on minimum 1024/768, it drops to 5fps for 2min, then goes up to 10-20fps for 10sec
-Wireless networks dont connect properly anymore (have to try 3 times or more)
-battery dies at random times and works again after about 5min
-Takes 10sec to load My Computer
-Takes ages to load any program, it eventually stops responding
-Takes 2min to copy 100mb
-HDD led always flashing nearly solid
-1gb memory always in use
-72% physical memory always in use
-Only displays 1gb ram when it was originally 2gb
-has broken 3 mice within a week of openning out of packaging
-even on 4gb ram, so performance increase

i am sending this in for warranty repairs so no comments on how to fix these please. all is being taken care of.

this thread is to warn people looking for a new laptop.
so, my point it ACER = CRAP (imo)

my laptop specs:
CPU: 2.2ghz AMD Turion x2
Ram: 2GB 533Mhz ddr2
HDD: 250gb
VGA: 8600mGS 512mb

thanks

Yeah, I'd pretty much only buy Dell. HP should stick to printers IMO.

That was your own fault for getting it.
I would have bought myself a HP rather than that piece of crap.

If it's taking ages to view files in explorer, or My Computer, give this a try...

Open up explorer and select Folder Options from the Tools Menu.
Select the View tab.
Unselect the entry marked 'Automatically search for network folders and printers'

Now your PC should be a bit quicker at scanning folders and using Explorer in general. There's a few tricks like this you can do to speed Windows up, maybe worth investigating them.

One thing about Acer laptops, probably any laptop really, is that they try to be sensible about how much power is going to the GPU. If you use the battery then often the graphics power is greatly reduced, maybe by your 30%. When plugged in the performance should be a lot better. So maybe your loosing performance due to power issues. The other thing is your fans, they may need a bit of a service, if they start to suffer then it might be reducing performance depending on heat as well - GFX card gets too hot or is not getting enough power, so it cuts back it's speed to help it cope.

I hear all kinds of bad things about acers. I'm a dell buyer, but I'm going to try and go custom build (not by me, cyberpower) next time around.

I've not had too many poor experiences, I've had good performance, however, it did gain a few technical problems that I've had to send it back to Acer for, they've fixed it and I'm getting it back this weekend.

They're good value computers...interestingly it's Dell that I am always told to avoid, and am recommended Acer instead for value stuff, I've known plenty of other Acers users with a good experience. The problems I had I kind of expected to happen in once for a few models - where things get a little faulty, as you can sometimes expect to have a faulty system.

Acers do have a bad reputation - they're the kind of computers that your grandparents buy at K-Mart or Wal-Mart. I've had good experiences with Gateway and Dell laptops.

Yeah I've had only positive experiences from my dell xps laptop - got it 2 and a half years ago - the other week i spilt tea into it and it stopped working. Luckily it's still under warranty (3 year next business day) - called them up at 11.00pm, they came out *to my house* the next business day, and replaced the entire motherboard, heatsink and keyboard free of charge lol - runs like when I first got it. Ok I didn't tell them it stopped working because I spilt tea into it, but still....great service.

Make sure you service your laptop regularly too - take the cover off and get any dust out by hoovering or using a can of compressed air. Will help the fans to spin better and keep it cool. If it still is overheating, prop it up on something so there's greater clearance under the laptop for air to flow about.

My HP laptop has been great, I have dropped it more times than I care to mention and it never stopped working. Very soon I after I bought it the HD died for no reason, but they sent the new HD and I recovered all my data fine.

HP computers > Other brands, in my experience.
I am using an HP Pavilion a6334f PC right now. It came with 3 GB or ram, a 500 GB HDD, 2 2.20 GHZ core 2 duo processors, and it runs nice, quiet, and cool.
I have since upgraded the OS from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit, removed the included ram (2 1GB sticks and 2 512MB sticks) and installed 3 2GB sticks, installed a secondary 160GB HDD using an adapter (It was IDE and the computer was SATA. Thank you Tiger direct!), and I've ordered 2 new 2.83 GHz core 2 Quad processors, and will be installing those when they arrive.
Point being, it was a very good machine to start with, and it has the awesome potential for upgrade.

In the other hand, I have heard that Acer <<<<<<< other brands. That's why I've never bought an Acer product, because the reviews are unanimously negative.
Yeah, stay away from Acer, go for a nice HP, or maybe a Dell.

OUCH. that sucks big time. That's the whole reason I installed my secondary drive. I keep a backup of all my important stuff on it.

They are quite reliable and pretty. Shame the nVidia 7200 in my father's laptop died three weeks after its extended warranty fell...

Well, I'm not entirely sure it was their fault about the HDD, but I just assume they never bothered to copy the data to the new drive. I was mostly annoyed that they took so long (over a month) to get the problem sorted, citing different problems each time we asked, then finally told us multiple components were broken and that they would replace the entire computer. Some noob probably dropped a magnet inside it or something.

Though, I do back up very important stuff. It'd be nice to get another HDD to backup the less important stuff though.

That all sounds like you have Vista on your laptop.

Me and my brother have the same laptops, I have vista (which doesnt work very well) and my brother has XP which solves all the issues.

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me, gotta go and downgrade

WHY does everyone say that Vista has all these problems? I've had vista since last spring, and I have yet to have ANY problem with it whatsoever. I believe that the reason people encounter all these bugs and problems in Vista, is because THEY went in and messed with something they ought not have.
YES, vista is a resource hog, but if you have a decent machine, it won't matter.

I have two Acers and they work great.

OK..... This is the specs of my last ACER:

Acer Aspire AX3200-EF9100A Desktop PC - AMD Phenom X4 9100e Quad Core, 4G DDR2-800, 640 GB SATA II, Blu-Ray ROM/DVDRW, Gigabit & 802.11b/g/n/ LAN,NVIDIA GeForce 8200, NVIDIA GeForce 9300GE PCIe, Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Yes it has two HDMI capable video cards. Price was $699.00 USD. For the money it works wonderfully. I don't know why my grandparents would need this

You're comparing two MS OSes to a kernel and a piece of hardware. Not an especially useful comparison

I think he aimed it at linux distros, which I consider to be OSes, no matter how technical you want to get.

On the comment about ASUS and Toshiba being "Gold brands".

I think there's four tiers.

Gold: ASUS, Toshiba, Toughbook
Silver: HP/Compaq, Dell
Stuff That Tries Too Hard To Be Fashionable: Apple, Sony
Trash: Fujitsu Siemens, Acer

There's hundreds (thousands?) of Linux distros. I doubt anyone here has tried them all or have even heard of them all.

I don't know. I've been using an Acer Aspire One for a few months now and I totally love it.

Running XP, 1 gig of ram and 120gb hdd and if I had a handbag then I'm pretty sure it would fit in it.

I've had no problems with it whatsoever. I should get Geecee3 in here as back up.

Well my acer aspire has terrible batter/charging problems. Other than that I can't complain about the laptop. 1ghzish and 1 gig of ram, 80 gig HDD but it isn't bad since I don't store anything on it except what I'm currently working on.

I honestly can't stand dell for their support. I installed a new HDD in my dell laptop (old old old laptop) and it gives me some weird message on the start up screen. I asked dell support and they said they knew the solution, but because I didn't pay for a support package, they can't help me with THAT problem.

I was like.... zomg..

Anyway, Dell, overpriced, but they are decent machines. Support fails hardcore.

I am thinking of buying a Toshiba x200 for $1000.
It features:
320gb hdd
8700GT 256mb x 2 sli
4gb 800mhz ram
2.6ghz core2
17inch lcd at 1440res

this is a steal for it's price. and it shold be capable to play almost all games on max. My acer struggled to play runescape on high but when i first had it it played in fulscreen at a high res at very good fps.

thanks

PS: PLZ dont post on how to fix problems, just your oppinion on acer or a better brand. I appreciate that you are trying to help me, but it is in for warranty repairs.

Since your an Australian, I suggest Going on CNET to look for reviews on varying laptops, They'll tell you which are best, rather than finding something on your own.

May I ask why your bought that acer in the first place?
As For brands like I said, HP are in the top range.

Dells are rip off's, Acer's are cheap and seemingly good value, But their laptops break (Their pc hardware works fine, one of the best imo), So theres nowhere to go, Which is why i never get laptops. Un-upgradeable, and as soon as they go wrong after the warrenty (Which is likely concidering how much its moved around), You're doomed. Obviously the good thing is that they are portable, But i have no job at the moment so for me it is pretty pointless.

Ok, as some of you know, i have sent my acer in for repairs. Here is what i recieved:

-NO A/C Adaptor (sent in with it)
-Has problems staying on (2hr max, then just cuts out)
-Games run WORSE (Saints Row 2 works crappy on minimum, 5-15fps)
-DVD Burner half out of unit

All they did was took it, wrapped it in plastic and left it lying around for a few weeks. and by the way, these are all NEW problems. Here are some new FPS rates:

GTA:SA (low)- 15fps
Crysis (med) - 5fps
Far Cry 2 (med) - 5fps
Red Faction (highest - very old game) - 25fps
Fallout 3 (low) - 20fps - plays for 2min then freezes

that is why i am not happy. my specs are very high for a laptop so this is what SHOULD be expected.

GTA:SA (highest) - 40fps
Crysis (high) - 30fps
Far Cry 2 (high) - 30fps
Red Faction (highest) - 250fps
Fallout 3 (high) - 30fps

my specs are (for those that didnt notice):
CPU: 2.2Ghz AMD Turion x 2
RAM: 4gb 800Mhz (default = 2gb 533Mhz)
VGA: 8600GS 512mb
HDD: 250Gb sata

thats MORE than enough to achieve the fps of what i expected.

and it has taken 3-4 weeks ALREADY and all acer did was make it worse. And now it is out of warranty.

thanks

PS: PLZ no sollutions
Now i say:
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
-ACER SUCKS!!!!!-
wait... there's more!

So complain to Acer. Take it to the Department of Fair Trading. Don't just post on a forum about it and whinge, actually do something. If this happened to me, i'd take it up with Acer, and if they didn't provide a reasonable outcome, then take it to the Department of Fair Trading, and get them involved.

I've had to contact the DFT a fair few times, and they've been great at intervening and finding a solution.

I've also got to give this a thumbs up. My brother's at uni at the moment and his laptop (dell) motherboard has died. If it was my apple machine, as far as I know, then I would have to get it sent off or at least leave it at an apple store. My brother gets some bloke from dell coming round to fit a new motherboard while he waits. Can't say fairer than that.

The only possible reason for slowdown is that your processor is a bit low-end, being a 2.2 dual. If that is the same power as your last one, then it's really messed up.

i have already contacted acer, this thread is to warn people that are looking at buying an acer, not to solve my sollutions, but i will talk with acer, and i will not stop this until my laptop works how it should. its sitting on my lap now and the cpu is about 80degrees celcius, it has been setting on a table with lots of ventilation. i appreciate the help and that i will try. sorry about my rant, i was still quite annoyed about what i got in return.

They told me that firstly they reinstall original software, this was not done, when i got my laptop back, it was no different, and all they did was put the battery into a bag and boxed my laptop, and they decided to keep a souvineir - my charger (box says to adaptor whilst i sent one in with it).

thanks

Makes perfect sense.

But like I said, if you really care about the laptop and want a resolution other than bashing Acer, contact the Department of Fair Trading.

Just take a look at this link, should have a contact number there - http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/default.html

My acer laptop is working with me for 3 years now. and perfectly. no slow downs, no battery problems. and has never been formatted. i belive it's not designed for gaming, it's more of a business laptop. But the point is that not all acer brands are terrible. i believe also the user behind the machine plays a role. cleaning, de-fragmenting, and taking care of it is important also.
ofcorse HP, Dell and toshiba are the top of performance, but also machines are machines. they might glitch anytime.

We have quite alot of acers at work but they are really old still they seem to be running quite well, as I am typing this from one. Still maybe its just modern acer laptops are bad. We only buy HP laptops at work now.

My acer desktop replacement Laptop is excellant, I've not no complaints about it at all.

Acer Gemstone Blue Aspire 8920G

Built in 5.1 surround sound speakers.
Clear, sharp webcam.
nVidia 9500M 512Mb (dedicated RAM) Graphics card (runs the latest titles such as Command and Conquer Red Alert 3)
4Gb RAM
320Mb HDD
Cinepanel allows touch screen style media controls
Bluetooth and Wifi built in
Finger Print scanner
Windows Vista Premium runs very well on it
18.4 Inch wide screen at True HD resolution, 1920 x 1080
Bluray Player built in

The laptop feels soild, I've been using it for at least 8 months now without any issues. I doesn't get particularly hot, even when I rest it on my lap. It has a great full size keyboard including numerical pad. It's a pleasure to work with.

Best of all the thing only cost me £850, at the time, the closest dell or alternative manufacturer I could find at the same specifications, would have cost me £1290

The laptop definately doesn't feel cheap!

Complain to Acer, I got my Acer laptop back from repairs and it's fine, 2 problems that are apparently common in laptops and easily fixed and they fixed them, it was annoying, but I wouldn't go as far as spamming 'Acer is crap' all of the time.

You have a poor experience, thus you complain to the people responsible.

You never know you probably faced a poor techie and your laptop was poorly manufactured.

My techie did a good job and he scores extra points for having the same surname as a 24 villain.

If you could fix them, wouldn't that just save you the trouble of sending it back to Acer?
