Well, just got back from the store today, and I had picked up the game "portal" for 20 bucks. Ive really been wanting to play this game...

Well, as it turns out, steam doesn't work on my new favorite operating system,w7, it just comes up with an error message when I try to run the game. I did some search's on steam and w7, only to find one topic at some forum site. It didn't help, so now I'm sitting here rather frustrated, and even more ticked off at steam, (my friends have issues with it all the time too.) So now, I don't know what to do.

I've been using Steam for a few months now and I love it. For being as insidious as it is, it's really great for multiplayer games, gathering people for gaming sessions, etc. I've never had it get in the way of gaming, and it's only enhanced it, for me.

But as for W7, you can't really blame steam for not supporting an unreleased beta OS. You shouldn't be running it as your primary OS anyway, I'd have to say, you might be out of luck.

Anyway, what's the error message, we might be able to help.

It says hl2.exe has stopped working. Than closes the message automatically.

That's not a steam error, that's a game error.

What are your system specs, and what graphic drivers do you have installed. Also, you might have luck sifting through these results:

Considering Steam EXEs are designed to be 'dependent' upon Steam, it could actually be either HL2 or Steam. But yeah, it's most likely HL2

EDIT: Is this error during startup, or upon entering a new game etc.?

Wait, you're upset at Valve for not making Steam compatible with an OS beta?

Do you have the latest ATI drivers? Does ATI have beta W7 drivers?

The drivers are the same for Vista.

Almost all my stuff that is compatible on Vista, is compatable on W7, which is why Im mad that Steam doesnt work.

You still haven't answered the question though - do you have the latest drivers?

Ok, so there are no decent mobile ATI drivers for Vista, let alone W7. I'd check back here periodically to see if you can get custom drivers:

http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati_vista.php

ATI is not updating mobility radeon drivers, so I think this might be your only good option.

The latest drivers ATI released directly are from two years ago:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/737-26978WindowsVistaDriversforMobilityRadeonProducts.aspx

Worthless.

Check your laptop manufacturer's website for the latest mobility drivers, or let us know what kind of laptop you have and we can check further there.

Both of those statements are completely incorrect - it runs on a laptop with 256MB of RAM and an Intel Media Accelerator, so it should definitely run on those specs

HL2 is a 2004 game, so 2GB RAM minimum would make absolutely no sense

Looks like they offer drivers that are only a month newer than the ones given by ATI (probably the same darn drivers):

Link (long):

It's very likely the cause of your problem. Your using drivers from almost two years ago, to put it in perspective, the drivers for my Nvidia desktop card get updated around once a month or every other month.

I'd wait for the Omega drivers to be released and try again. In the mean time, if you have a desktop, portal doesn't require a whole lot in order to run, if you have an oldish desktop, it may still work

I've played Portal on a 6200 with 512Mb of RAM and a 1.8gHz Athlon. It doesn't need much; all of the power hungry stuff is in the effects which can be disabled or toned down with ease.

So, I guess its just my OS. Well, I dont know what to do then. Wait till Summer when I get a new computer, return the game or what? I DONT want to have to re install Xp pro again. I would have a LOT of stuff to move.

Btw, all my apps and other games work fine. Its just steam...

I'll be surprised if you can return it. You can't even trade in PC games where I am in any of the four (reasonably) local video game shops.

In complete contrast to what game stores say (about not reading the requirements = no return), if you have a receipt and have attempted a return within 30 days, it is illegal for them to refuse a return (at least in the UK) - if an object isn't fit for purpose, it is your express right as the customer to be able to return it.

Lots of game shop staff will throw out a lot of flak about you not being allowed to return the item, but make enough fuss (and make them aware that you know your rights) and they will throw money at you pretty quick

You may want to make sure your sound drivers are up to date too, sometimes that can cause crashing.

You can also try setting some command line options:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Command_Line_Options

One thing I'd try is directX 8 mode, try the d2d and ogl options too.

You can add commandline options by right clicking on the game *in steam*, click "properties" and click "add command line options" or whatever it says there.

Actually Portal came out in 2007, and it runs on an updated version of the Source engine.

All the improvements to Source since release in HL2 have been graphical/post processing - they certainly don't quadruple the RAM requirement

im using windows 7, steam works fine, as are all my hl2 based games: tf2, l4d etc.

as for blaming on ATI, they released beta drivers for windows 7, the only problem i've had with that is that theres currently no support for openGL, meaning i can't play Spring, but all my other games work fine.

in short, i think it's something wrong/corrupted/badly setup on your system

Hey, thanks Robert F! I found out that there is an update program for my graphics card. I got one update for W7, but it didnt give any details. I am reinstalling "Portal" and "Steam" to see if it works.

EDIT: Okay, nothing. I even installed the beta Steam version but it still fails. I cant even post the bug on the forums because Im "on que"

Funny, 'Windows 7' doesn't appear in those requirements.

I really can't see why somebody is annoyed that somebody hasn't upgraded their software to work with an OS that hasn't even been finished being developed. As it's in a BETA stage you can't expect all of your software to work 100%

But from reading this thread, it seems that Steam isn't to blame, nor are ATI. Windows 7 maybe or something else to do with your system, my advice would be to get Vista or XP back onto your system, after all Windows 7 should not be your primary OS, because it isn't complete, the BETA stage is just so people can actively bug test it for them and for developers to start working with it. Thus it is not perfected.

Same applies to BETA drivers, they may not work 100% - I had BETA nVidia drivers on my laptop, after a while they got funky and had weird errors, I checked nVidia's site and found the final version had been released and that problem had gone.
