I was there. We had to be on lockdown for about ten minutes before they let us go to our next period.

If this is off-topic or otherwise, feel free to lock. But it's important to know of stuff like this.

Thank you.

Wow, my friend goes to Alderdice. I hope he wasn't involved in this...

I think the school shooting yesterday overshadows this event a bit.

@ omega: Yeah, there were a few injuries.

@ Grandma: I don't know why I said that, but it's somewhat important to know of this in case someone (like omega's friend) is in this sorta situation.

@ Roxas: I heard about the shooting, that's pretty sad.

Oh. Never mind, I'll edit it.

Email me the name of your friend, I might know him, if you wish.

This probably isn`t as bad as you think in the great scheme of things - like Grandma said it is somewhat overshadowed by actual deaths(not saying that violence is a good thing). Its not uncommon for groups of kids to gang fight with knives round here - on or off shool grounds. When I started high school, the building was only a few years old - it had been relocated due to school vs school fights(every dinnertime and at hometime)- it took many years for the violence to die out though it hasn`t died out completely. Before I went high school I used to bet with friends what the outcome would be when the schools were situated closer (I lived across the road)- on which side would get fewer arrests. I will never forget the numerous occasions the school/kids from the other school would turn up on mass and reek havok - the "c*** of the school" would be summoned along with his closest mates and lead us around to drive the opposition away, chaos would ensue followed by lots of "Nee Naws". At least back then it was all fisty cuffs and no knives, worst that would happen is a broken bone or bitten ear(might make the local paper if savage/severe beatings occured, like 10 people vs 1). Nowadays I`m actually scared to get on the bus to work due to the mass number of sprogs that like to carry "for their protection" - there are quite a lot of highschools around here. Only two months ago I was waiting for the bus home when a gang of "schoolies" hanging round nearby attacked a cyclist with a tazar gun(dunno how to spell it), just because he looked foreign. He looked like he could be polish, but turns out he isn`t - they partially blocked his path to slow him down then one of them zapped him while he was still moving quite fast. The end result was a police riot van turning up some time after the incident, only to be attacked themselves! Theres also a council estate not to far away, where the kids just constantly try to miss school, then when theres enough of them off at any one time they burn a car out on the local shops carpark, then scarper off home (yards away usually) when the police arrive. Just as the police start to leave they get there pellet guns out and shoot at the vehicles. Basically they find it fun to pass the time by baiting the police. Bring back national service I say and make army/air/police cadets compulsory to attend for under 16`s. When parents give up on handing out discipline its time for someone else to take control. Actually starting to go offtopic here, I could tell you stuff like this all day but thats my two pennies worth anyway.

Going to a grammar school, there has never been a single conflict (of worth reporting) here; or in the general area of the school. So I give a no to your proposition. Obviously, some areas will be bad, but a lot are fine too.

I really don't have time, so I'll just say that his name is Ian. I just talked to him over the phone a short time ago, and he sounded fine. I'll ask him about it later.

Yeah, forgot to mention it really depends on where you live and I take your point about grammar school. But just how bad are we willing to let it get before were forced to take these kinds of measures? The idea behind it being compulsory is to install some authority. Its only natural for youths to rebel against authority, so letting them run wild like they have been doing just isn`t feesable any longer in lots of areas. I`m sure its not suitable for all, but for the majority of kids around council estates its the perfect solution, or at least I think it is!! I used to go to army cadets, at first as punishment(father was in charge of local cadets, I`ll leave out what the punishmnet was for), but after a while when punishment was over I carried on going. There were a few guys and gals there in the same situation but it was the authorities that made them go not there parents(unfornately my dad was a policeman, hence my punishment being severe). Not many of the cadets went on to join up with the army, but for the six that were there for punishment, they carried on going to cadets after there stint was up and all joined up with the army. I myself never - I failed the medical based on my height to weight. I was underweight for my height then by a large margin, have always been and still am(I`ve seen specialists and nothing). Maybe a 3 strikes and your going to cadets for a year type of punishment might work. That *should* account for the nice people who deserve a choice!

These guys were not running wild, it was a fistfist between two gangs over what seemed to be a basketball game from the previous day. I called it a semi-riot because that's what it was headed for.

But a police officer and a school officer had to be sent to the hospital; one has a spine injury.

Over a basketball game! Hell, I just go out there and beat them at basketball again. If I lost, then I just keep playing them until I win.

I think every single school, especially those teaching teenagers, has problems with violence of some sort among the pupils. You can send your child to the school with the best academic record in the area but there will always be problems with kids trying to be 'top dog' and using their fists more than their mouths.

Say the wrong thing to the wrong person and you might get a whack. Somebody says something you don't like, you have to make the choice between whacking them or dealing with it a different way. It all goes towards learning how to cope with the same situations in later life.

Unfortunately some people don't learn the consequences of making the wrong choice, which is normally the violent choice, and end up doing something they shouldn't.

I wasn`t talking particularly about the guys involved in your area, more around the hotspot areas, I cannot speak for the area where you live but I`m sure its not just limited to where I live.
I don`t recall mentioning the thread title as an issue, technically it can take only two people for a riot as its an unlawful gathering or something;
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Riot
(don`t know if thats a reliable source, but its what I came across first)
Obviously your not used to these kind of events or you would not feel this was worthy of anouncing on a forum that gets read all over the world...it`s sad that people get so seriously hurt though, espescially when they are an innocent party.
