Hi,

Unity 2.5 is now released. I can't wait to try it out!

Quote: "Today we are extremely happy to announce the release of Unity 2.5. For the first time Unity development is now available for use on both Mac OS X and Windows! True cross-platform development with Unity has now been realized. This has been an enormous project that has taken well over a year to complete, it's a release that we're very proud of having accomplished. What's more is that during this effort we've also nearly doubled in size as a company and so there is a lot more on the way, it's going to be an exciting year!"

Cheers,
Bozzy

Woop! Testing now, I have finished my presentations that are due in tomorrow, so I think I've earned myself some time to play around with dev tools.

I'm looking at getting the indie version + the iPhone dev pack. Under their license you can install it on one PC *and* one Mac, which I would like to do. Then you can export the game under both platforms, plus a web version which works in all browsers. Not too shabby eh.

Works for me, it looks quite groovy, I might try this out properly this weekend and follow a few tutorials. It seems very well documented.

It looks as if there are some very high quality games made by it

I've been playing around with this and it seems to be everything I've been looking for in an engine, I've been following the main tutorial on their website and it seems most interesting. I totally recommend to anyone to open up that tutorial to start with, it seems very good for getting started with.

I realise that it's not entirely drag and drop, there's scripting involved, but I am enjoying the trial at the moment.

The engine looks incredibly good. But I found the editor a little clunky in terms of handling. It could get quite tedious if a lot of assets had to be dropped into the world.

Scripting is something I'm not familiar with also. But its something I'm trying to get into with XNA and C#, so it might be worth a more serious look later on.

This does look nice, a bit expensive for the pro version though. You need the pro version to get real time per-pixel lighting too.

I've downloaded the demo and built the island scene into a standalone PE, when it runs it says that my computer doesn't support water reflections????? I'm running a 8800GT with a Phenom 9950 BE, how the hell can it not support reflections, it's not high end but it's not crappy either.

I think it may be to do with the fact that you built it using the Indie demo edition, not the pro edition.

Yeah that could be the reason. I like how this engine is structured, with built in support for different scripting languages. I've emailed them asking for a trial version of the pro edition. It says on their site that if you want to try out the pro edition just email them.

Edit: Does anybody here have a copy of the pro edition? If so what's it like in comparison to the indie edition?

I bought it

It's exactly the same as the indie edition, apart from you have as well as the "Standard Assets" in the explorer, you have "Pro Assets", which are basically post-processing, better water etc. Oh, and the shadows options are enabled under lights.

Oh, we're also making Breeze Wars in it.

Cool, hey I don't suppose you could build the standard island map into a PE, and upload it somewhere so I could take a gander at the graphics could you please?

The Lerpz tutorial is really good to follow. It's a good start in learning how to use the engine, it starts from the bottom and works its way up into creating a fully playable platform game.

I've not finished, but the engine seems fun:

@Bozzy

Yeah I was messing around with that yesterday, I wanted to take a look at the dynamic pp lighting. The water definitely looks better in that example than it does using the indie version though.

I could put together a modern scene (from the ArchModels collections) and show you it, with the dynamic pp lighting.

That would be awesome if you could, it doesn't have to be elaborate or anything just a short demo.

Cheers

Just found this web player game made in Unity3d, it demonstrates the vehicle capabilities of the engine. It's quite a funky little game too, you have to create an account (from within the game) but it takes literally 30s, just needs your email and un/pw.

Just finishing sorting out this thing for you.

You can personally get the Pro trial version (simply a key you enter to unlock the features) by emailing them.

This engine looks great. Just wondering with the indie version you can sell your games with it write? And it doesn't have to be a web based game either right?
Thanks

A simple look at the website says yes and yes

If you use it on a Mac, you can only export the game for Mac, and vice versa with Windows, unless you own the pro version. That being said, the indie version allows you to install on 2 computers, so you can install it on a Mac and a PC and export them from each.

This is very interesting. For me it was going to be Leadwerks but this right here looks very professional and nice.
