Hey everyone

I would like to announce the beta of my new indie game showcase and development site which I've been working for many months, gametorpedo.com. Basically, you can upload any of your games or works-in-progress (known as projects on Game Torpedo), be it DarkBASIC, DBPro, FPSC, or any game development tool really. Game Torpedo runs off a decent VPS so it can handle a reasonable load. There's a 50mb upload limit and download speeds are fairly high. Not only that, it's free.

Please remember that the site is currently a BETA (v0.8), so if you find any bugs/floors/inconsistencies, I would greatly appreciate it if you could report them to me.

Hopefully this is the right place to put this notice since it isn't specific to any game dev tool.

Update 28th September: Site engine updated (v0.8) - should be a little faster in places.

Update 12th June: Simple developer profile system released.

Update 18th April: I've just completed a dynamic signature generator for your games and projects (like the one below). Simply log in and there should be a link under the description.

Looks and sounds nice. Ive registered.

You should probally put another section for game design documents, people like me finish loads, which they wont use as they focus on one project.

I've signed and halfway submitted but I don't have a demo and it's not letting me get past so I'll probably put a random rotating cube .exe.

Thanks for the responses everyone

@Dared1111: You mean like a facility to upload plans or keep notes on projects?

@Diru: No problem, I may remove mandatory uploads for projects anyway.

Oh yeah, could you also add a section where you can put a really long description (aka design document) but on the same page as the project. Oh and when submitting the project, I was given a restriction of 10000 characters, then when editing it, it gave me a restriction of 2500 characters. This didn't affect me, although I'm not sure if I went over the limit or not but it's not consistant

Edit: and the random button doesn't work.

Thanks for pointing this out - should be fine now

What I might do is make the game description limit 50,000 instead of 10,000 so a reasonably sized design doc can be included.

The random button requires all the sections of the site to have entries to work all the time. When I get a few articles up, it should work on every attempt.

What you could do is just provide like toggleable box, so then the basic information won't get clogged up with small details which no-one except the designer cares about.

But allow "infinite" words for that box.

Edit: Maybe allow subscribing to development posts of projects, and when an update comes out etc.

I'll join, and submit a few of my little games.

EDIT: PLEASE add a linux catergory for the games. There are tons of great linux games out there and recognizing only windows and mac is just stupid.

Thanks for signing up ZekeGames, Dragon Knight and AndrewT!

@ZekeGames - I wasn't originally sure how big the linux audience on the site was going to be, but since there's already a demand, I've added it to the list.

Also a way to view games and projects in one list, so you can view everything in a single list regardless of whether or not it's completed, that would be nice.

Very well designed site (Just uploading my Mechaniser game)

One thing I thought of was to have an optional client application that you download, which would keep track of which games you have downloaded, and give you some more advanced search features, and also let you download and upload games more easily.

I wouldn't mind making the application itself if you think this is a good idea

Welcome, Diggsey! I actually had a few thoughts about some sort of client while I was midway though designing the site. In fact, I have some php code lying around somewhere which outputs an xml list of games and projects that could be easily accessed by an external program of some sort. I'll think about it and get back to you about it some time, perhaps we could both work on something. Also, I played your game and I really like it.

@Diru - I've added a full list at http://www.gametorpedo.com/list.php.

*cough* a free steam type application, if you are going to do this I'd suggest implementing a high score system for each game which can be accessed blah blah..., who knows could be the next big thing, except if it's full of free games instead of having to pay for them and perhaps a few ad's once and a while.. you'll be able to make your money...

Just a side note: I've made a thread about this on another forum, hopefully some more people will join... Even though they aren't game programmers But they are game players so all is not lost!

When you leave a comment with smilies in, it just inserts the name of the image, not the actual image.

I also made a thread about this on another forum.

EDIT: Another thing I would like is to have a download counter on the games and a view counter. Also being able to sort games with those while browsing would be nice too.

EDIT2: Also, links to people's profiles via their name in comments would be nice too.

EDIT3: Also, try to add the games people have submitted on their profile so a person can see games made by the same developer.

Great looking site! I think I'll join once I get some better games going...

As far as the application side is concerned, Xyzz1233 and I have been working over the last few months on this very idea (Steam for indie game developers). Not only will we have the games being downloaded and sold, but we've started work on a media store for content for games, etc. Maybe we can work something out between us, or something.

@Diggsey - Yeah, I'm aware of this and I will work on it tomorrow. I'll also eventually get to work on a download counter .

@Gunn3r - Sounds interesting, we can talk about different possibilities by PM when you get the chance to join.

@ZekeGames - Thanks for that! In the not too distant future, I'll be working on proper profile integration (which means modding IPB ).

@ z_man
I ask you this before doing so but would it be acceptable to help your site by placing links on our own sites?

I ask you because TGC doesn't allow it, and just wondered if you'd permit linking or prefer people found Game Torpedo via other methods.

No problem, inbound links are appreciated!

It may also be possible to do link exchanges soon, once I do a few other things on the site like getting the forums up.

On another note, a few updates -
- It is now possible to see the download count of a game, however this system needs a bit more work (to ignore false downloads).
- Every time the game developer posts a comment in one of their own game/project pages, the comment has a header saying 'Game developer'
- I have been optimizing some of the code so you may feel a decrease in page loading times. This would be more apparent if the site was bigger.
- A few minor bugs have been fixed

I am now working on getting the forums up and running.

Nice idea. I just registered and uploaded a game The Nerd and I made about 3 years ago... The quality of that game is immense..

I hope the site really takes off at some point, it's a great way for us to share and get feedback on projects.

Look's like freddy's submission just revealed a new bug. On the main games page, the text describing freddy's game is overlapping the text from block pusher xtreme. The site is really well done though, I've downloaded a few games from it to try out. I might sign up if i ever happen to finish one of my games.

@Freddy - Thanks for uploading your game

@Crazy Ninja - Yeah, it appears line breaks are getting included there, which evidently shouldn't happen. I'll sort this out sometime soon.

@ZekeGames - I will hopefully submit a thread there later on today.

In other news:

Over the last couple of days I've been working on a dynamic signature generator for games and projects. There should be a link under the description of any game you've submitted which allows you to create one (like the one below).

Whoops, forgot about the height limit - I've reduced the small sig height to 120px (there's also a large option if someone wishes to use the signature where a larger image would be ideal).

The site is great - all you need to add is new ways to view and browse games (creator name, game name, rating, downloads, views, comments, etc) and market this on other forums and such to make it popular. Also try to cater towards the players, and not just the developers.

@flashing snall & Roxas - Thanks for that! Social bookmarking sites help increase traffic quite a bit.

@Satchmo - Thanks for pointing that out.

@ZekeGames - Yeah, the next vital step is to get more gamers on to the site.
