It's 3am...and now I can't sleep...why you may ask? A waking dream is why.

From what I understand from my father's explanation, a waking dream is when someone is woken up from a deep sleep phase but is unable to move or speak. This is because your brain releases some chemical during deep sleep that paralyzes your body. While your in this woken state, you dream and you seem to hallucinate images and or emotions during this time. This is what just happened to me.

I don't exactly remember what I was dreaming about before, but I knew it was a dream. I was walking in my old high school's hallway when I started to hear a strange tapping noise. I slowly walked towards a room and opened it. Within an instant, a pair of ghostly white hands grabbed at my chest and hand and pulled me forward. Suddenly I was awake, I could see my room and I was aware of everything around me...but I couldn't move or speak.

And the owner of those hands was floating just above my face staring at me. Well...his head at least was floating. He was sort of grinning...but not that happy to see you grin...for a single moment I thought I was dead...

Suddenly with my left arm free of the paralysis,I thrust my hand towards the floating head...but it was gone. I quickly grabbed my sketchpad and pencil and sketched what I experienced.

...just...scary...

I have had something like that before; I was sleeping on a sofa near the kitchen (on holiday) and in a dream, I started hearing kind of distorted clanging sounds and some talking. I realised that it was my dad, in the real world, doing some washing up or cooking. I tried to say something, and although I was shouting normally in the dream (and I could hear myself say "Hey I'm dreaming!" etc, I could also here how it was coming out in the real world, which was just "Mmmmrrrm mpppphhhh".

Basically, my ears had woken up, but all my other senses were still getting their info from the dream, and I still had the lock-down on movement.

It was incredibly frustrating at the time, but pretty cool in retrospect.

You know guys, this sounds like a salvia trip. During those, you aren't really moving a lot, but you might think that you are. You aren't experimenting on drugs are you? Feelings of a "force" pushing\dragging you is also common during those trips, as with a creativity boost with shapes (like for instance creatures or patterns appearing).

Cool!

I've had several of these experiences on a nightly basis, until I stopped dreaming at all. Now I go to bed, close my eyes and suddenly it's morning. I don't really feel like I've slept though, so maybe it's time traveling! OMG!!1

No but seriously, I wish I could dream again. The last dream I had, that I remember, I was a girl. That was pretty cool. And in the dream I was hot, and had a sister. I could also climb the roof without any difficulties. Oh and my stamina was amazing, I could do physical exercises that I can only "dream" of doing in RL.

That means you may not be getting REM sleep, and it may be a severe disorder. I highly recommend seeing a doctor if you think you're suffering from REM sleep deprivation.

What? Nah, it will probably pass. It's only been two years. I reckon this is just caused by stress or something.

Anyway I'm going to the doctor in two days (someone kicked me in my finger, and the joint hasn't healed yet after three months) so maybe I'll bring it up and hear what he says.

I doubt he'll have a clue. When I was speaking to my parents about this, they didn't have a clue either (they're only GPs, not neuroscientists or psycologists, so I suppose that's understandable)

Many scientists/people think these experiences are where people get their alien abduction stories from, luckily you're smart enough to realize it's part of a dream .

Sometimes when I'm sleeping, I'd be dreaming of walking on the curb then falling oof. I wake up due to that jerking movement and I usually end up banging my head on the wall in the process.

i get this quite commonly, and keep a diary of what i experience too. the first example that comes to mind is when i was asleep on a night train in italy, going from milan to naples, there was 6 of us packed in a compartment, myself, a friend and this family of russians. it was very uncomfortable, not only for being crowded, but the air conditioning was slowly injecting flu into my body, and the ride was quite bumpy and noisy.

i dreamt that i was in an alleyway with a group of people, and could hear death coming towards me, not that i know what death sounds like, but if it had a sound, this would be it. actually come to think about it, think of the monster form Lost, only more haunting.

i knew i was dreaming, and was begging to wake up, i cried out the the other people in my dream to wake me up, but they either ran off or stood and staired. one of the ones that ran off went around the corner and i heard them getting torn to pieces, so i yelled some more, and then "death" came around the corner to me, it was invisible but i could hear and feel its presence, and just as it engulfed me, i woke up, and my reflex rection was to kick my friend in the face, she somehow stayed asleep despite my foot now being covered in saliva :S

another example is when i dreamt fish came falling onto my bed, i woke up and could still see it happening, so as soon as i could move i ran to the computer (which i left on all night) and came to the #darkbasic IRC channel asking wtf to do about these falling fish, then i crouched by the door, watching them still falling.

my recurring one is mounting a bike, i go to push on the pedal to get moving, and obviously as the pedal isnt there, my foot kicks the end of the bed and i wake up

I have a recurring dream kinda like that, where I'm walking down stairs, then I trip and fall and when I hit the ground I wake up--it happens at least two or three times a week.

It is very common to experience sudden falling or slipping sensations just as you are falling asleep. There is a name for it but I have forgotten it at the moment.

Also, when I was falling asleep, I swear I heard somebody call "Hey [insert my name]!" Scared me so I went and told my dad. He said that is common too.

Its actually called a lucid dream, which is when you are aware that you are dreaming and you can actually control what happens in the dream. Google it

I've had this happen once before, although I didn't have any weird visions or sensations to go along with it. Basically I had woken up from a deep sleep very suddenly for some reason, and my whole body was basically stiff and I couldn't move for about a minute or so. It was a very odd experience, but even in my still half-asleep state I kinda knew what was going on so it wasn't really that scary.

I've also had a couple of lucid dreams that I can remember, those are pretty interesting.

That's really cool that you were able to remember and document what you saw though. Most of the time I can't remember my dreams after about ten or so minutes of waking up.

As for the falling sensation and "kicking" awake when you're about to go to sleep, very annoying. I hate it.

Sometimes, I will sleep on my arm right, and I'll wake up early in the morning and it takes about 5 mins for me to move it. It really made me nervous the first time it happened.

Isn't this sleep paralysis? not lucid, since lucid dreaming is when you actually dream, but can control your actions in the dream with the knowledge that you're actually dreaming. There is a way to actually boost the chance to get lucid dreams, by writing a dream diary for example. Dream paralysis is when the person is in the stage between woken state and sleeping state. You could say that you're half-way sleeping, that's why you can see stuff in real life which isn't really there. Mind tricks lol.

Yes, it sounds exactly like a case of sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is generally associated with some sort of evil presence, since the mind tries to make an excuse for why you cannot move. The hallucinations can sometimes be quite vivid as if they really ARE happening and can be extremely frightening, especially if you don't know what is happening. Every night we go into sleep paralysis, it's just that we usually wake up after it wears off. It's rarer to feel sleep paralysis on sleep onset, but it can happen.

Sometimes, just sometimes, when I close my eyes I fall asleep.

I remember one time waking up and my left arm was completely dead. I couldn't move it at all for 5 minutes. Was rather strange.

Oh and another time I remember half falling asleep, and kind of dreaming while being half-awake. It was strange, I could see both the dream and the room at the same time.

This used to happen to me when I was about 3 or 4. It was similar to this, how you feel you are awake but paralysed, and all the lamps, and paintings, anything that wasnt lit up by light would all turn into the same scary face, that used to scare the hell out of me. It had curly hair, a sharp mustache and a 'deformed' eye.

It was like a ghost, it just, popped out of all the paintings and lamps that werent lit up.

So ever since then till i moved house, I slept with the light on. Honestly, It sounds wierd, but its almost like my house was haunted.

Now i don't really get dreams at all, and that is pretty much ever since we moved houses. I used to get really bad dreams. And i would have the same one, over and over. One was that we were taking my dad out to the tractor fairly late at night to get on with seeding, and as soon as he turned on the tractor, It blew up, and there was nothing left. Another one was drowning in a pool when i was a baby, which has never happend IRL, and I dont have any fears of water.

Now i dont have dreams really, unless its a dream about something that isnt ridiculous in real life, such as what might come in the week etc.

I do get Deja Vu allot, like I feel like I have done many things verry much similar to the time I was doing it. I get this 3-4 times a week.

Well, That just about sums up one of my longest posts yet here

Looks like you were haunted by an evil Pringles guy!

And yeah, sleep paralysis and lucid dreams are two completely separate things, although sleep paralysis and waking dreams often go hand in hand.

I remember once I was on a bus and really tired, I was sort of half asleep where I was somewhat dreaming but I was also aware of what was happening on the bus.

As some people already have stated, you were experiencing a sleep paralysis. Basically when you sleep your body is trying to prevent you from acting out your dreams by paralysing your body. Not only can you experience it when trying to stay awake through the process were your body falls asleep(a method called WILD, this is for the lucid dreaming people), but you can also experience it from waking up from a dream, which it seems like you did.

The reason why you also saw these hands while actually being awake is something called hypnagogic hallucinations. Which is basically just hallucinations that your brain creates when you're in a deeply relaxed state(There's a lot more to it of course, but its hard to explain it all without going into too much detail).

All this stuff is actually extremely interesting, and if you have any interest in it I'd suggest looking around at this website:
http://www.dreamviews.com/

Everything about lucid dream and well.. sleeping in general A lot of tutorials and resources to read, too.

Quote: "Now i dont have dreams really"

You dream every single night, its the dream recall that's failing A good way to start remembering dreams again is every single time you remember a dream, you write it down in a diary. It doesn't sound of much, but I went from remembering zero dreams to 2-3 dreams each night only after a bit over 1 week of doing this.

Raw SandVich, that sounds scary. I remember when I was little I had a similar experience. In that house, I would walk down to the basement in my sleep and wake up there. Or I would wake up in front of the large mirror we used to have there. But the scariest thing was when you woke up during night, and you could see stuff (well, giant snakes) moving around the walls, the floor, and in the roof was a giant hand. Searching for something.. Maybe it was just me having the same dream over and over again, or there was a ghost?

Anyway, I made this for you.

I get that occasionally as well, usually in the left arm. Probably just because of the strange positions/locations that I fall asleep in.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who experiences this sort of thing. I was talking to my father about it and he mention that when I was younger, right after I moved into the basement bedroom, I would have 'waking dreams' every other night of a little girl who would just look at me from the foot of the bed, mostly hidden with just the top of her head and eyes showing. Then the last time I dreamed of it, I said she slowly stood up, walked towards the wall, and just before melting into it she waved at me...never had those dreams again.

The Nerd:
Thanks for the link. I really am interested in this sort of thing. Especially trying to figure out meanings behind dreams.

Ben:
I've woken before to have my arms feel like they were weighted down by weights. Every morning I wake up and I can't make a fist because it feels like something is in my hand. Probably a lack of blood circulation..but you never know.

Edit: Here's an idea, for anyone who wants to, next time you wake from a dream, post in this thread. We already have a nice assortment of dreams posted, might as well keep it going.

I rarely remember what I dream. But the times I do I recall them very clearly and remember them days if not weeks after the dream.

I dreamt alot when I was younger, maybe 'round 5-6 years old. It was the same dream almost every night, I actually lost count of how many times I dreamt that dream. =/ It was something about an ice castle and in the end I started falling in random situations. Weird I tell you, after a couple of times, I feared that dream..

About the deja vu part, I read (I think it was on a community or Wiki) that some psychologist thinked that deja vu occurs because the short term memory is not remembering the current moment and situation and deports the memory to the long term memory. Which makes us think that it has happened before. I am not completely sure about it though.

I don't really believe that at all. If it did why do people move in their sleep?

You probably could move it but just didn't feel like it because you were scared or just lazy.

Their have been plenty of times where I have said... "Arm reach up and grab me a beer." but it didn't work or happen.

Sleep paralysis is very much real... it's there to prevent you from acting out movements you do in your dreams:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

It doesn't apply in all cases, as you will see some people sleep walking, or actually make some movements from dreams for short periods of time etc.

You clearly haven't experienced a sleep paralysis yet

I've never had this happen, but I have had rather strange dreams. Not uncommon though.

I like to try and figure out the meaning(s) of my dreams. Usually, it's the more normal ones that seem the oddest to me. For example, I had a perfectly normal dream in which I was dancing with this girl, and then I woke up. I can remember every single detail about the dream, except for who the girl was. I am 100% sure that I know her right now though.

Another weird thing is that for some reason, whenever I take a walk in a certain town (Kenosha Wisconsin), the very next night I always dream about walking the exact path I took, but something changes. The first time this happened, I dreamed that the person I was walking with (who was my actual gf at the time) told me that she wasn't a virgin and wanted to break up with me. That later came true, except for the not being a virgin part.

The second time this happened, I dreamed that I was walking with another friend of mine and we ended up getting marred in front of the pharmacy. She's not exactly my type, and so it was very weird.

So for some reason whenever I walk in that town, I dream about the walk. And everything usually stays the same, except for one small detail.

Sorry for the long-winded post.

i have never had this happen but, What is fun if your tired but don't feel like sleeping (or are tired and want to have some fun)

Lay down and start to go to sleep but concentrate on something(any thought will do) and just keep thinking about that or just concentrate on bunny trails of random things and if it works (for me atleast) you won't think your asleep but you can't open you eyes (unless you really try) and then you can still get up and walk around but you see weird rooms sometimse(i'm geussing my dreams ) but one time i was doing this and got up and walked into the kitchen then "Woke myself up" haha fun when you bored

I have also heard that you cannot see the face of people close to you in dreams, like your mother or siblings. You know who they in the dream (or have an idea but you can't see their face, or remember who it was after the dream. This have happened to me many times, it's so frustrating because in those dreams something good always happens, and I don't seem to remember it!

I remember this one dream where I was getting personal training to become a priest (I am an atheist, BTW) from pope benedict. I suddenly saw a sniper, perched on the top of the vatican, and I just yawned. He shot the pope, then the pope gave me a thumbs up and croaked something about his last words. Then he collapsed and cockroaches started crawling out of his sleeves, a la men in black. Then I simply yawned again, and walked out of the vatican. I became aware that the sniper was following me, so I thought 'I'm going for a walk' and then jumped on a hover-scooter. I drove off, and came across our town's milk bar. I walked in and saw my two best friends drinking thick shakes. I said to one of them 'I don't have enough money for a thickshake. Can you give me some?' and then he screamed at me, 'NO!' and the walked to the counter, bought a thickshake and then walked to me and said 'here you go, Toby'.

Very strange, but that's life for you.

Interesting dream there, Toasty.

A few days ago, I dreamt that I was on an airport with a few friends (I believe it was an airport, but I never saw or heard any planes or other people for that matter). It was very dark and we were sitting on the waiting benches when one of us booted up a laptop and started playing Diablo 3. Suddenly, some random people from the show Battlestar walked past us but we didn't really care because Diablo 3. Then the lights came on and random containers appeared, everything became bright and sunny, but we didn't flinch because Diablo 3. Other stuff started happening to get my attention (probably) but I can't clearly remember what it was because Diablo 3.

Apparently, Diablo 3 is awesome but I'm not a fan of the series. Haven't even played the first of second game.

I have lucid dreams all the time. If I'm too frustrated, or feel too stressed about the situation, I can fast forward the time on command and resume the dream. This is especially handy for monotonous dreams.

Or I can even open locked doors, make objects appear, etc. Whatever it takes to move the story along. It's almost like my subconscious knows I'm dreaming, but I don't fully know it, otherwise I'd wake up.

i tend to have dreams like that, But i tend to sit up on my bed, but cannot move after that, there are two main parts i 'dream' after that

1. I only see and hear cogs in my mind, just screetching and the sound of cogs hitting together.

2. i am in the middle of a road, and theres alot of trucks coming to me, as they hit me i tend to wake up and fall on the wall XD

Anything in particular? or am i just wierd

I often have snippets of dream that seem perfectly normal and then they happen a week, maybe a month afterwards. And I remember that part from my dream. It's weird because it's the only part that I remember from the dream. I am like the King of deja vu! It's happened to me more times than I can count.

I also used to sleepwalk quite a bit...either that or amnesia. My parents tell me that I do things while I'm "sleeping" or I notice something different in my room (i.e. there's less water in my water bottle - yes I notice that) but I don't remember doing it. To me, it seems to be too "intelligent" to be sleepwalking, so I'm thinking it's amnesia.

What was I talking about again?

That's what they WANT you to think...

Yeah, I used to get that a lot too, sort of makes it feel as if you'd dreamt the future or something. I think you'd classify it as a premonition. While I'm out of my depth completely in the area - I'd assume that you never actually dreamt it at all, but your brain feels that you dreamt it since it wants to work out the source of a deja vu feeling, so it supposes it must have been a dream, at least thats what I'd suppose.

If you see a thread of mine in GDT, please don't expect it to go anywhere.

I never had dreams where I was paralysed, but I used to have control over my dreams... It would start off as a dream, and then I would be able to think again. Was awesome Also, I chose when they ended, and I'd see loads of bedrooms flying past, and then I'd see my one and jump in. I never found out what happened if you got the wrong one!

I've heard of this feeling before, however it can't explain how I knew what my sister was gonna say after I recognized a Deja Vu. It was quite the long deja vu. Useless too but it was crazy cool being able to predict what she was about to say before she said it

I've also had lucid dreams before where I Was able to go, "Hey I'm sleeping!" and like change them to be very different. Like I go from going to school without pants to start winning contests etc.

Very nice. Amazing what our pile of nerves (What we call a brain) can do.

Dream hacks for the win. Is it not enough to have mod powers in RL? Must you have awesome powers at night too? Lol

A few nights ago I dreamt I was Jack Baur. It was B.A.! YEAH! Twas only a dream though =/ I ended up in a corn field somehow and a helicopter crashed in front of me. All the farmers and people came out, but I knew they couldn't be trusted so I tried hiding behind some random trees. They were all wandering around searching for me (somehow they knew I was there!) and finally I couldn't move around the trees any further and came out with my gun drawn. I took someone hostage to try and help me escape! Yeah, it was a cheap move, but I had to get out of there! I'm Jack Baur, I have the world to save! Well, when all was said it done, they were nice people, so I let the person go and I came in with them to have a nice dinner with cornbread. So much for the hero agenda right? I'm pretty sure I just led a good life after that. Although I do miss the good old days of whispering to everyone just to freaking drive them insane.
