so are their any other aleternatives to photoshop at around the photoshop price range or above? i am trying to find a good paint program that is good for making game the uv map textures

any suggestions please?

What kind of features are you looking for that you can't find in GIMP? Just curious.

If you're willing to pay the price of Photoshop (or more), why not just buy it? Why do you need an alternative?

The GIMP is probably your best bet. "free" doesn't mean feature free. It may not come pre-loaded with everything you want, but there are tons of plugins for it.

Other than that, I'm not sure of anything that's comparable to Photoshop.

this may sound stupid but the layers dont show as small image tabs at the side what is kinda annoying....very small thing i know.
Also iv not really tryed gimp but does it allow for custom brushes?

i was hoping for a program tht i could use tht would say if i had a rust metal texture i could cut out the rust and stick it on my texture very easily with virtually no jagged edgeds so it looks smooth if tht makes sense can gimp do this if so how?

Go into the layer palette options and you can change that right in there.
EDIT: Or if you mean that you can't see the layers palette just go to Window and select layers (F7).

15-year-old copies of Paint Shop Pro can do that. Use the offset tool, whatever GIMP calls it, and patch up the seams with the clone tool and then save it as a brush.

Go with gimp, but you can do that pretty easily with Photoshop, so you know...

This is going to sound very obvious, but it's an important point:
Gimp is not Photoshop. I know, I know, it's hard to believe. But I say that because if you open up the gimp expecting Photoshop, you're going to be disappointed. You just have to get used to its menus, its shortcuts, and its organisation. It's a whole new beast. Learn to use it, and you'll love it.
And although the UI is still... not the best... the latest version of the gimp has been very impressive.

Check out Pixel, Multiplaftrom image editor similar to Photoshop. It is still in beta stages, but has already won some awards and is promising so far.

Buy Photoshop. I got it for about £20 last Christmas. It's worth it.

Actually, whilst there's a bit of Photoshop expertise flying around, can someone tell me how the hell you paste into an opacity mask? Just won't do it for me.

Fireworks CS4 is half the price without about the same functionality, I would really recommend it.

Select the layer with the Opacity mask, then go into the Channels tab. Make sure the Layer Mask is visible and selected. Then you should be able to draw and paste into it.

I can draw into it but not paste. I already tried that as well as pre-greyscaling the image :/

Corel Draw and Corel Photo Paint are pretty good, admittedly, I haven't used any version since Version 9 from 1999, but it was great back then, can't imagine it went to hell since then. Give it a try.

Absolutely. It's not CS4, it's PS7. And I got it on some student deal. Don't jump to conclusions.

I used Paint.NET all of the time, up until I found GIMP which I like much better.

Well, have you never seen the stalls in shady markets selling pirate DVDs? 10 for £10? At least two garuanteed not to have an obese man go to the toilet halfway through?

I mostly use PSP9, although if I had a decent graphics tablet I'd probably force myself to use Photoshop more, it's much better for tablets.
