It is referred to as 16:10 to make its relationship to 16:9 clearer.

4:3 is (or was, at least) the most common. 5:4 was extremely common with gamers for awhile (1280x1024), but I think 16:9 is becoming the most widely used.

I find it hard to read text at higher resolutions and if a person doesn't have a huge monitor, things can get really small at the higher settings

here's my list...

kirk: 1440 x 900

Chekov: 1024 x 768

Server: 1024 x 768

Janeway: 1280 x 800

What I usually do with screen rez when i'm writing a game is put every rez the pc can handle into an array, and let the user pick.

Remember to scale 2d stuff using the y measurement tho to help with different aspect ratios.

I'm having a spot of bother with the resolution on my new system. I've kept my old screen which I know is a 1280x1024, but when I set it that high in the Display Settings the monitor goes out of range. Everything from 640x480 to 1280x960 works but not the full resolution. 60Hz across the board. I'm using 1280x960 for the moment and putting up with the blurry image... :/

Interesting. I'd never encountered problems changing display settings via Start/Control Panel/etc until yesterday when I decided to change the setting on the laptop (don't ask).

I changed it from 1280x800 to 1280x1024 and expected to see a change in screen resolution - I didn't, all that happened was the extra 224 rows of pixels were out of view which made using the simplest applications very awkward (they became visible when I moved the mouse over the edge of the screen).

Wierd. I'd always assumed that the new image would be scaled and filtered to fit the screen but apparently not.

Edit To keep this on topic, my new "Cyborg" uses 1680x1050 and my old "Dinosaur" uses 1024x768.

My Eee does that too unless I use a hacked driver to scale the screen but that's so slow and unreadable I prefer scrolling.

I would never name my computer Janeway. Even though I love all Star Trek shows every time I watched Voyager I hoped for Janeway to die. Of course I finally got my wish on the last episode... but it was a future version of her so it was semi-disappointing.

And why no Spock computer?

desktop: 1920x1200 + 1280x1024 (24" + 17")
laptop: 1440x900
netbook: 1280x768 8.9" (yes that is correct, it is NOT 1024x768 or 1024x600 or 1280x800, the hp mininote 2133, i love it. excellent keyboard, excellent screen (if a little reflective) and excellent sound, also very well built.xp/lightweight linux runs like a dream on the via c7 (1.2ghz) no matter what the crap reviews say. i advise browsing with noscript, but without stupid cpu killing scripts it easily handles my browsing habits (aka lots of tabs, probably even by people here's standards))

wouldn't bother writing a dbp game for the netbook though, s3 graphics aren't up to more than quake3 really.

I didn't think Janeway was bad at all. The only character from Voyager I didn't like was Kes (or however her name is spelt). I loved it when she left, and when they brought in 7 of 9.

It's only because she kept missing opportunities to get the crew back home. I realize it was just a plot device to keep the show going and that is VERY good but she stuck to the Federation rules a bit too closely for my comfort 99% of the time. Every other Captain broke rules every once in a while... not her.

The coolest character on Voyager for me was the holographic doctor with Neelix a close second followed by Seven of Nine. The coolest badguy was Species 8472. Why nobody can remember that number is beyond me.

Sorry to hear you lost Spock to the Romulans.

Oh... screen res 1024x768 still.
