Just realised that time is passing and no sign of one.

I hope there is (if it's in the UK) - official or unofficial.

It seems it will have to be unofficial (see next post) - but it's been done successfully before so don't give up hope yet.

List of those interested in coming (plus location):

Green Gandalf (Cornwall)
Darkowen (Northern Ireland)
Nickydude (North East)
Diggsey (location unknown)
Shaun Of The Dead (North East)
Asteric (Newcastle - the NE one)

There is no official convention this year. So it looks like you just volunteered

Since I seem to be the only one interested, that shouldn't be a problem.

That's three so far - but we still need a real volunteer to organise it.

Let's run this for a while and see how many are really interested. Anything is possible given sufficient enthusiasm.

Only if there's a confirmed bug in the counting procedure - or if you pay twice.

Not sure if it would be possible but have a virtual one, with web cameras.

Might not be the same as being there face to face, but at least we could all be there .

I will come if it is close enough to me and I'm available on the day, I'm in London.

Also, if you do something in the US between the 1st of August and the 14th of August, near San Francisco, then I will probably be able to make it

Maybe we should host it in the North-West?
Like Manchester for example, or some other place that instead of urban, is Rural!

the lake district?

We can all camp out in tents, and have the convention in one of the lodges

Alternatively, we could go here: http://www.premierinn.com

I might consider it this year, don't put down for definite, but I might see if I can make one this year. I strongly emphasise the 'might'. If not, 2010. This Summer I have 2 holidays as it is - a trip to the Wacken Music Festival in Germany and a holiday in Barcelona. A weekend out might be too heavy on my budget.

I have 2 homes (as I am studying at University): East Anglia (Cambridgeshire) and The Midlands.

The Lake District might work, or maybe the Peak district? I have a couple of friends of friends who know some good spots around there. Assuming everybody is fit enough to go around the peak district. If you didn't want anywhere rural or out in the open (after all, we're meant to be geeks and we wouldn't feel at home with the outdoors)

For locations: somewhere central, in the Midlands, Manchester, as said, is a good spot. I'd make sure people's safety is taken into consideration, you wouldn't want people stepping into the wrong side of town alone later in the evening.

[edit]

Oxford is probably a nice place to go. A couple of good places I've been camping that are good for their rural locations are the Cotswolds and Sussex. If you're going to Sussex, avoid the campsite at Camber Sands...it is truly awful.

Yea, what sort of age range of people would come? Im 17 at the moment. It would be quite cool if we could all show off the games were are working on and to have some people who actually understand how much work go into it and how it works

London would be a good place for me, if i decided to come

This thread has taken an unusual turn.

Might be tricky keeping our laptops both powered up and dry. Internet connection could be awkward too.

On the other hand it might do us all good to abandon the hardware for a couple of days and resort to talking and thinking armed only with pen and paper - and get some much needed exercise at the same time. More a "Geeks day out" than a convention. Food for thought.

I think the usual advice is that under 16s are welcome but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (or something like that ?). It's been a LONG time since I had to worry about such things ...

What this really needs is someone much younger than me to organise - although I'll willingly help out if I can.

Fair point. I'm sure people can do that sort of thing with their friends in their own time. Though if people wanted camping, those are a few recommendations.

I'm interested.

I've always wanted to go to one but never had the chance too.

Would be cool.

Oh and I'm in Surrey; near Gatwick Airport; though I'd be driving.

They take a lot of organising and planning, just to warn anyone who plans on taking up the challenge. The first task is finding somewhere affordable and accessible, with food on site or close-by, providing tea/coffee/cakes/biscuits for breaks, a meeting room with the right facilities (projector, tables etc), accommodation etc...

Then, you need to get the money in...

Yep. And people have a habit of saying they are definitely interested but don't actually turn up.

It would be good to keep up the tradition of annual conventions/meetings somehow.

I vote the spot to be North Korea. If not, I heard Nigerians always have ancestors that left them tons of money before passing, so I'm sure one of those people could hook us up.

Just a thought,.. make a 'virtual' meeting/convention? IRC chat?, or Messenger?, TeamSpeak? or a combination of irc chat & teamspeak?

Any Guest 'speakers' on TS, with everyone else 'listening', responses and questions go into the Chat instead of everyone trying to talk at the same time in TeamSpeak.

would need a 'dynamic' web site that the 'speaker' could upload examples and post things. (the TGC forums could work for this)

Anyways, it might be interesting to see if a new more 'dynamic' and organized Virtual Conference could be set up. Then we all get to go, and have the comforts of home.

Just a thought, Cheers!

With David on the VOIP & IRC parts, I got a Ventrillo server that aint exactly used much, I could modify it alot for something along the lines of a VOIP convention...

But sadly I don't own a IRC server... So that'll be another problem...
Also Xfire allows you to make a VOIP server for no charge too... Just that Ventrillo is better. xD

EDIT:
Ventrillo allows users to use a Chat feature that is basiclly a Messenger...

Time to be nerdy and do it all virtually.

Just doesn't seem the same somehow.

It sounds not much better than us all agreeing a day and time to post on a specific thread in this board - we can then read each other's posts and comment as we please. We just need to remember to keep refreshing the page ...

I would be interested in attending (especially if it was in the North East) but I couldn't organise it.
The best part of the convention (for me) is the socialising with people that you only normally communicate with on a forum. So, having a 'virtual' convention just doesn't cut it for me.

Well you should send an email to TGC and ask to organise one for 2010 that will give people loads of time to prepare for it.

I might in the future - won't have time this year though.

The obvious problem for me (other than those which BatVink helpfully mentioned ) is location. It's highly desirable, though not absolutely essential, to use a venue that you can actually visit to check it's facilities, etc.

@Green Gandalf

We never get a convention down south! If you're organising it, and you're in the wall of corn, then it's your prerogative to organise a southern one. Make those northerners travel for a change!

I am in Hampshire, and would attend a convention down south. If it all goes through, I'd be prepared to do a presentation on something too, if I could find anything worth doing.

Edit: Oh, just realised this was a medieval post. I thought it was quite odd trying to arrange something for 2009 with two months to go! Oh well.

Why not a place like Leicester? Thats right in the middle of england.

I would like to go to a convention. Meet some of the people from these forums. I will definitely attend if its no longer than a 2 hour drive or I can get a train from Oxford there.

I drove to Northampton for a wedding the other day. It took me about 2hrs. That's my comfort zone! It also cost me £50 in fuel there and back. I think that's my limit.

Doesn't look like this is going to run though. It's too late in the year!
