hello!

My annoying little brother has gotten into some slang words lately, and I think he is pronouncing them incorrectly. So I\'m making a post to prove him that it is wrong.

Anyway, he thinks \"pwnd\" originated from \"owned\" and that originated from \"cat\". This however makes NO sense for me at all. He also thinks that \"pwnd\" is pronounced the same as \"owned\", so \"powned\".

I think that \"pwnd\" originated from \"pawned\", because people were too lazy to write the vowels, and it is pronounced the same as those small chess pieces \"pawns\", hence \"pawned\", yeah...

So, who is correct?

pwned is absolutely from "owned" and pronounced exactly the way your little brother suggests.

I pronounce it either way, it doesn't really matter to me. Pawned definitely makes more sense to me, but it definitely did originate as 'powned'.

Interesting theory.... I didnt realise cats came into gaming terminology.....

I have a friend that pronounces it "pooned" but yeah it does originate from owned.

You can pronounce it either way, no one can technically correct you.

Secondly, who cares?

pawned would be baited, as in chess the pawn is often a set up, big whoop i can play chess.

the other owned really speaks for itself.

though pawned is older than owned and was in fact the chess move. so either slang got really smart and all metaphysical on us or it id as always the lazy way of saying i just totaly killed you i am completly better than you.

bah symatics lol

'pwned' is actually a grammatical which came about when gamers (online first-person shooter gamers mostly I'm pretty sure), while in mid combat or whatever you wanna call it, would always type 'owned' as fast as they can to insult the player that they killed or whatever. However, with the quickness and carelessness of their typing and since the 'p' is right next to the 'o' on the keyboard, the gamers would type 'pwned' and eventually it just stuck.

So, with that being said, 'pwned' is really pronounced as 'owned' but it is personal preference really I guess.

Quote: "Question: "What is 'pwned'?"

You have seen this peculiar term online, with expressions like "I got pwned!". Now, you hear it on the bus and in public as people speak about their personal lives. So what exactly does "pwned" mean? And is that the same a "pwnage"?
Answer: It can be pronounced as "owned" or as "poned", with both pronunciations being correct. In some cases, you will even hear it pronounced as "pawned". "Pwned" means "to be controlled against your will", or "to be defeated by a superior power". You might also hear the expression, "pwnage", which is the noun version of "being pwned".

This "pwn" expression originated in the 1980's from the word "owned". It was used to describe when a hacker would take remote control of a server or another computer. With today's MMO games (massive multiplayer online games), the term "pwned" has now became a way to gloat in one's victory over another player. Conversely, pwned is an expressive way to say that you yourself have been defeated by another player."
.... About.com

There are of course many other sites with similar explanations but nothing about the "cat".

If you are using the word pwned in a real life conversation it hardly matters how you are pronouncing it because you are already too sad for anyone to care about.

Sorry if I sound irritable, it just gets my wick when people say 'lol' and 'noob'. It's a bit ... creepy. Like their internet lives are now more important than their real lives.

You don't sound irritable, it's just the truth... My brother annoys me with it so I know what you mean... This is most likely the first time I have ever posted slang in my almost 3 years of forum activity...

Yeah, the "cat" thing is weird... He said he got it from YouTube

I have a long list of Newspeak words that I don't know the meaning of. Now it's seems that "pwned" is no longer in that list.

Anybody get my literary reference?

It's interesting, the origin of that word. But I'd never pronounce it as 'pawned' again. I did once, over the Team Fortress 2.

"I totally pawned you YEAH!"
"I'm sorry did you say porn?"

And so I just say owned now!
