seems like a good time to put the kettle on, then! And I thought MY computer was slow!

Do 'more information' and check the speed it's copying at. If it is genuinely doing it that slow (as in, the estimate is coherent) then you may have a case of [pending] hard drive failure (since presumably it's copying to a 'burn folder')

And the one hour! If it were just 33522 it wouldn't seem so bad, would it? But no, windows goes and puts an extra hour for you to wait.
It's nearly 92 years, so that hour will really annoy you when it gets done.

I used Vista for a very short time, and this was one of the reasons why. I started a data transfer of a 14MB zip file, and said it would take 3 days to transfer. As usual, I figured Windows was just being it's silly self and in a matter of seconds the time would correct itself and the file would transfer... but no. I let it run for 30 minutes and the 3 days only decreased by 30 minutes.

I then rebooted the system into my XP partition and started the file transfer again. 17 seconds and done.

Another reason was the constant drive activity and periods of confusion it had when you clicked on something. No response for 10-15 seconds.

Vista..... there's nothing quite like it.

Brian.

What I want to know is why there is not a copy ETA algorithm on the planet that accounts for the basic bytes/sec, the time taken to make a directory and the time taken to make a file.

Because the additional time spent to accurately measuring it could just be spent doing the operation in the first place

.. Well mine works fine

I tell you this though: Never buy packard bell. My CD drive just blew up, literally. I put a CD in, there was a massive BANG and suddenly, pieces of PC coming out of the drive.

Not really. Most of the bottleneck is not in the CPU but in the drives themselves and the interfaces (USB) nowadays.

That's the cases, they're not well designed and cause microfractures in the inner ring which spread due to centrifugal force stretching the disc.

I mean the CD cases. Some are awful, I did once take a disc out and as I pressed the "PUSH OPEN" tab there was a sickening crunch and cracks spread out through the middle.

Ah, Vista.

That's why I'm gonna buy my Dell Inspiron Laptop from Best Buy, so that when Win7 comes out they'll upgrade it for free.

And I'll wait a week or so before release...that way nothing will be lost and I'll just set it all up then. Hehehe.

Hoping that, one day, I'll finally get around to producing a game for you all to play.

The weirdest thing happened to me the other day. I was copying a (approximately) 600KB .TXT file and it just got stuck. My computer wasn't frozen, because I could operate Windows Media Player fine. It just didn't do anything. I restarted my computer, and then tried copying it again. It would have taken me 4 HOURS to complete the copy. I restarted my computer again, and it copied in a fraction of a second. Really weird.

Swordfight! My cheesy little first game!

Vista's really messed up when it comes to moving/copying/transferring files. I don't really know why, but it is. I'm so glad they fixed it in Win7.

It's got to be something like a mutex not unlocking seeing as the transfer just hangs as if it's waiting for something.

I have a question: are you running with a Service Pack installed? I know that SP1 fixes some problems with file transfer.

I think it was a missed variable or something, it only took about 20secs to burn the 300mb worth of files to CD...it just gave these ridicules numbers. It actually started with around 145k days...

...especially a floppy disk install...'please insert disk 31'...for some reason my floppy drive always sounded like a missed car shift...hard drive wright as well. Though that was more like a cat got stuck in between a missed car shift...

My copy works fine... Well, it did, until I decided to increase the virtual memory usage by a gigabyte. Speaking of which, if you, uh, wanna help then searh 'absolute catastrophe' in the search box.

Mine does that, for about 10 seconds, and then sorts itself out.
