I bet everyone here has had something catastrophic happen to their computer... something so bad that they had to pay to get it fixed, or they had to buy new parts.

The worst thing to happen to my own computer so far (it was a Tandy 1000 RLX) was my niece. She was a toddler at the time and it was amazing how she could get to places you didn't think a toddler could reach. Cute, innocent, and unknowing in the ways of the world. She tried to feed soup to the floppy disk drive. x_x

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

A mallet went through the insides several times. Ok, so it was an old one and I was moving country at the time and had about 10 computers in the house, but still can't think of anything worse from the computers point of view really...

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

When I was a kid, like 7 or 8 my Dad decided to plug in the joystick interface on our Spectrum 48k while it was switched on, fizz, pop, death...

But we did get it exchanged and ended up with a Spectrum+ with it's harder than granite keyboard. Seriously they went from dead flesh rubber to carved marble.

But that's the worst thing I've seen happen to a computer that I actually cared about, I've done terrible, terrible things to PC's over the years, especially hard drives as you can't just throw an old drive in the skip, you have to smash them .

Really the only bad things I've had happen have been viral - I clicked on a link to an unknown website, which automatically downloaded a piece of software that just kept downloading porn to my desktop - I tried to deleting the program, I tried to find other ways to remove it, but it just stayed there infecting my computer. I had to reformat and reinstall Windows to get rid of it. I learnt 3 lessons for this, 1) be more cautious of where I'm browsing. 2) Have a better internet security 3) Use a browser that asks your permission for all your downloads (It was either IE 5 or 6 I was using)

Hardware stuff, my laptop's keyboard went funky, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. But on an older computer, I tried installing a new graphics card, but when I turned it on, the motherboard fried. It was a very old computer, so it didn't matter.

On my first PC the power button broke, kept pushing button to hard when it went wrong, that I broke the plastic clips holding it in, had to take the front cover off to push the button, after a few months the wires came off, so there I am touching two wires together, just like hot wiring, but on the the PC to start it.

I'd just bought this 4Gb SCSI HDD years ago now, it cost a tidy sum. Anyway, on the way home I took it out of the box to look at it (as you do) and I dropped it, killed instantly, which was nice.

If that happened to me, I will seriously smash my computer and run away screaming. Yes, I'm that freaking scared of bugs. Dead or not. Especially big ones.

One day my computer starting rebooting all the time and it took me a day to track down the problem. Apparently my keyboard decided to turn against me... every time I hit the spacebar it would reboot the computer. I had to get a new keyboard of course... it's kinda hard to program without spaces. I kept it in case I wanted to play a joke on somebody.

I've had two CD's shatter inside CD drives but only the first one had to be replaced... I opened it up and slowly got all the pieces out but it still didn't work. The second CD disaster I did the same thing and the drive worked perfectly after all the shards of plastic were removed.

Back when we had LCD numbers to show mhz on computers I set the jumpers to what I thought would show 32 and turned on the power... some crackling and a puff of smoke later the LCD was dark... never to show anything again. I didn't bother replacing it since I wasn't selling the computer.

Once I was taking a spare HD to a friends to help him backup his drive before reformatting. I slipped on the porch and the drive flew out of my hand. After I got up I found it 4 feet away on the cement driveway. My first reaction to seeing it sitting on the cement "Well, that one is toast."... and it was. I grabbed another spare drive, walked slower this time, and finished the mission.

A few months ago a friend brought over three old computers of his to see if I knew anybody that would want to buy them. I plugged them in and after an hour of cleaning them up (removing spyware/viruses, updating windows) one of them started bellowing out smoke. I still have no idea why it became a chimney but it was the power supply. It's really hard to sell a computer that spontaneously catches on fire... even if you replace the cause of it.

There's more horror stories but that's all I can think of right now.

I bought a laptop and my wife accidentally spilled half a bottle of beer in the keyboard. It smoked, it sizzled, and then it never turned on again. I couldn't return it because of the smell. It was blatant alcohol abuse.

About 10 years ago, me and a some friends were partying and had a plethora of old computers that our high school was throwing out (My buddy loaded his car with as much stuff as he could and took them home.) Later that night, we commenced to setting them on fire in his backyard with gasoline. His backyard is across the alley from the fire-station and the fire-station is across the street from the police station. 20 minutes and 10+ ft flames later, the police arrived and gave him a ticket. His mom was none to pleased.

There's something in this room that makes you can't speak well.

There are some horrifying stories in this thread!

The worst thing that ever happened to our computer was a few years ago, and it was all AOL's fault (America OnLine). Well, maybe not, but it's nice to blame somebody!
AOL had offered a free service, and being a frugal family we started using it. It seemed really good, but then a ton of things started going wrong with the computer, ultimately resulting in a hard drive failure and a need to wipe it.

Luckily, the things that were on it were easily replaced, but it was still annoying! Stupid AOL...

Hoping that, one day, I'll finally get around to producing a game for you all to play.

That story about the roach in the PSU was mine. However, it isn't the worst thing to happen to my computer because it's still running just fine. Can't say the same for the roach though...

I deleted a key bootup file from the C: directory by accident.

The computer would constantly reboot, timing down to reboot again while telling me that there was a problem. While trying to fix it, I took a break, forgot my case was wide open while it was rebooting over and over.

I came back and there was a hole burned right through the middle of my hard drive.

My mother once poured a full cup of tea over my desktop whilst it was running with the side off. Fifteen minutes later it was working fine. Two weeks later it died.

I used to think that was a joke, like I would say that window was drilling a hole in the hard-drive, seem like it can, oh er.

Never forgot the fan, never forgot thermal paste......

I was a newbie then, I thought more paste meant better. I put half the tube all over the top of the CPU, not just the die. I got lucky and it worked for years.

I had a drive fail once, lost all my music. And aside from my laptop dying on me (monitor going out), I haven't had any big computer issues.

I had a friend who asked to borrow my spare Thunderbird cpu/mobo. It was later that I found out why, he already melted his own Tbird cpu all over his mobo while overclocking it.

After many long hours of gaming I had finally beat Diablo 2, I started Nightmare mode, and decided to go to sleep...

30 minutes later, I woke up by my dad who said my computer suffer from a BSOD, and my hard drive was wiped.

Walking for that long and he didn't notice the sudden decrease in weight on his shoulders?
