What century would you have live in if you had a choice, and what would you have been, and why.

For me its either the 1700s as a pirate (yeah, yeah, yeah, put a sock in it..."In the Navy" hadn't been written yet lol) even though I make fun of nautical terms, customs, etc every chance I get. I guess it's the romanticized version of a pirate, Jack Sparrow for example, that I find interesting. Perhaps it's because I have problems conforming to rules, which makes it a surprise that I've lasted in the military for almost 10 years.

The other era I would have lived in would have been the old west as an explorer, miner, lawman, or outlaw - perhaps even an industrialist. Its the adventure, freedom and danger of the old west that I like, and the fact that it was pretty much free of human development.

That is interesting. I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean not two hours ago.

I would probably pick the Renaissance, assuming I could understand what anyone was saying. And I only say that because we just learned about it in Art Appreciation, and it would be pretty sweet to see some of the great Renaissance works presented for the first time.

I will live forever or die trying.

General Jackson, you are weird.

I would want to live in the early through mid 1900's. If I could live it without worrying about being drafted that is...

If you could promise that I wouldn't get sick, I would pick medieval times. There were some nasty, nasty plagues that went around those days though.

actually, even though being more fit is something i really want i probably wouldn't change the past for that either; it would mean i'd miss out on whatever course of experiences i would have that will make me the strongest i can be

I would probably pick the late 19th to early 20th century. The romantic period produced so much wonderful music, I'd probably try to apprentice under somebody like Wagner or if it were earlier in the 19th, or somebody like Orff, Stravinski, or Strauss.

Heh heh, same here! It would be interesting to see things evolve, and it would probably mean I'd be a better programmer.

I think another time period I'd like to be in is either the Renaissance, or the Colonial times, around the Revolutionary War and after. I'd just like to be able to see all of that happen and get the most accurate Government essay ever written. But the history of it actually does fascinate me.

It was already established (ages ago) that 2012 is not an end-of-the-world prediction: All the Mayans predicted is that <some event> in the past will repeat. That could literally be anything.

I'm quite happy with the present to be honest - yes certain romanticised versions of the past sound appealing, but honestly it'd be nothing like that. For the people that picked dangerous, exciting times to live in I'm betting you'd be dead pretty damn quick. Also, you'd miss out on so much we have nowadays. Music - it would be so different (limited access to certain local folk music and classical music when people played it, but that's about it). You wouldn't be able to listen to everything we can today - metal, rap, dubstep, classical (I know they had it but you couldn't whack in a CD and listen to it on demand), jazz, folk, rock, pop, blues, prog, experimental kazoo grindcore (for the fans of Splatter Day Saints) - whatever tickles your fancy, you can listen to. I'd much prefer that than having to wait for one gathering in a blue moon where a few troubadours played folk for a few hours.

Same here. I have cowboy in my roots too. My grandpa, when he was 13, rode with the Montana cowboys (they had some fancy famous name, I think they were called the black riders but I'm not sure) across the entire state.
And after watching Appaloosa, a GREAT western movie, it made me want to be a cowboy lol.

I'd like to live in a time around 60 million years ago so I would know what caused a certain extinction event...

If we're talking about recent history, then I'd want to be in that era where a certain queen said to "let them eat cake"...

I think it would be interesting to see the colonisation of America: exploring a whole new continent and then trying to build a utopia in it (after the civil war, that is) sounds fascinating.

Having said that, it's easy to take things for granted that we have now, so even if I could change when I was born, I wouldn't.

Are we talking about going to these times as an observer, or as an actual participant/member of society? Because for example, the industrial revolution thing, there's a difference between watching people working in factories for barely enough money for food and slowly waste away their life and actually doing it yourself. I'm not saying I'd particularly enjoy either, but...

Quote: "You obviously don't know me"

Well honestly as a member of the military I wouldn't be entirely surprised if you were a little more expert at handling yourself in combat situations than some of the people on here, for example myself, who in many of these situations would probably stick to the time-honoured traditional tactic of pooing my pants and possibly crying a little.

ROFL, well that's not always a bad tactic

Quote: "Long ago, when sailing ships ruled the sea, this captain and his crew were always in danger of being boarded by pirates from a pirate ship.

One day while they were sailing, they saw that a pirate ship had sent a boarding party to try and board their ship. The crew became worried, but the Captain was calm.

He bellowed to his First Mate, "Bring me my red shirt!"

The First Mate quickly got the Captain's red shirt, which the captain put on. Then he led his crew into battle against the mean pirates. Although there were some casualties among the crew, the pirates were defeated.

Later that day, the lookout screamed that there were two pirate vessels sending two boarding parties towards their ship. The crew was nervous, but the Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, "Bring me my red shirt!" And once again the battle was on!

The Captain and his crew fought off the boarding parties, though this time more casualties occurred.

Weary from the battles, the men sat around on deck that night recounting the day's events when an ensign looked at the Captain and asked, "Sir, why did you call for your red shirt before the battle?"

The Captain, giving the ensign a look that only a captain can give, explained, "If I am wounded in battle, the red shirt does not show the blood, so you men will continue to fight unafraid." The men sat in silence. They were amazed at the courage of such a man.

As dawn came the next morning, the lookout screamed that there were pirate ships, 10 of them, all with boarding parties on their way. The men became silent and looked to the Captain, their leader, for his usual command.

The Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, 'Bring me my brown pants!!!'"

Haha that's amazing. I wish I'd heard that before the pirate party at my uni bar the other week. Mind you, I got quite drunk so I probably would have spent the night telling the same joke again and again to everyone I met. Would have been cheaper than buying Jagerbombs all night for everyone I met, which was a bad call (spent £70 on drinks between £1.50 and £2, and probably £20 of that was on other people), but still...

Choice 1: About 500 years in the future, assuming the world is completely fubar, cos I'm sure there would be some kick ass technology, and amazing vehicles to cane about in. I would be rich and famous and made entirely of gold.

Choice 2: Medieval times, in lawless Britain. I'd command a band of brigands and ride around looting and pillaging and razing villages to the ground. Mwahhaha.

Hmm, think you missed one there. Not exactly a PC choice, but if you want to be historically accurate...

Choice 1 : Whichever century in the future allows us to live forever (none of that Highlander who wants to live forever rubbish please...) by converting our mortal bodies into pure energy. Then I can fufill my lifelong dream of visiting Mars. In the nude...

Choice 2 : Roman times. Those guys had some fun. But not as a slave obviously. Then I can fufill my lifelong dream of taking over a country. In the nude...

Choice 3 : The 80s. I was there, just I would like to be older, and more colourful. And fufill a lifelong dream that involves being in the nude. Obviously...

Cheers

Are you kidding me? Why are most people choosing times in the past? I would go for the 31st century
Seriously, we're living in a world where probes sent to other planets aren't a huge deal; where computers and fantastic devices are common. I would definitely choose the place with the most technology - and that's the future.

Any tell who? None of us would still not know.

If my choice is only the past-present, then I'd say around 300-400 BC so I could be a Spartan! Otherwise, I'd definitely pick the future. That sounds like a good year Neuro, I pick 31st century as well.

I'd go to a time before women had any rights, then point and laugh at the Suffragettes...

I am kidding of course. I suppose the obvious answer for me would be to go back to when the vikings were around, but lets be honest, they weren't the friendliest bunch. Though, given the opportunity, I'd be a Viking God...check me out, Thor! Well...I'd probably pick Vidar...we all know what happens during Ragnarok.

I don't there's any time I'd pick, maybe in 20 years time when I'm ruler of planet earth where we're all united under one nation and we'll be fighting Xenu-phobic aliens (see what I did there?)and starting a new chapter in human violence.

Best idea I've seen so far on this thread

Quite. In our extensive studies of Norse mythology we have of course come accross whatever this is very often.

Haha, I thought the big bang was supposed to have everything encompassed into a single point, so wouldn't there literally be nothing before that? Maybe not even time. No, I'm not a scientist so I don't know the details or care for them

I would not want to go so far in the future, like the 31st century. What if the world is empty and devoid of life, and as soon as you exit your time machine you are hammered with radiation?
