I'd have to say portal or hl2 are good candidates. I've never played the first Halo.

I don't know really. I love L4D2 and it's the only game I play at the moment although I guess I wouldn't consider it the 'best' of the decade. HL2 was pretty good, although I first played it years after it was released.

hALP!!! The game is addicting me! Oh wait this isn't a very constructing reply.

Portal. Planescape: Torment. Ultima VII. BioForge. And Portal. Also Portal. Especially so considering that it's the only one from the 21st century...

Games of today are mostly rehashes of what's tried and true. But counting multiplayer hours, I guess Halo 1/2/3 and Modern Warfare deserve some recognition.

Can we "cheat" with combination games? If so, I'd have to say the Orange Box -- HL2, Portal, and TF2.

If not, well, I'd still include those three games in the list for top games of the decade. All three are grade A excellence.

Hmm..very hard to decide. I think some good candidates would be KOTOR and Kingdom Hearts series for their deep stories and very well developed characters.

P.S. HL2...not that great of a game.

Everyone has their own opinions. Just not a fan of the HL series.

HL2 is amazing, and Team Fortress 2, Portal, Halo: Custom Edition and CoD 4...

Haven't played Modern Warfare 2 yet tbh...

Violence isn't the answer, it's the question...

On the topic of Team Fortress 2, have any art gurus here made any submissions to the Propaganda Poster contest they have going on? The winner gets a custom item with their name on it that nobody else in the game will be able to have access to.

I have wanted to do this, but I suck at art so I gave up quickly. Who do you want to win the war, Demo or soldier?

Definitely not WoW, imo. It's pretty new, but I gotta say Dragon Age (for the PC, specifically).

Though, imho, Doom 1/2 is the best game ever. It's the only game from that period that I (and thousands and thousands of other people) still play .

Halo was good but not the best damn game of the decade. HL2 also doesn't deserve it, it has next to no replay value at all, in my opinion. WoW definately does not deserve game of the decade. It's like giving, I dunno, crack cocaine the food of the decade. CoD4 may deserve it, MW2 definately should not be GoTD, due to it being horridly short and unbalanced (still awesome game though).

If it was up to me, it would be Assassin's Creed 2. I have never before played such a perfect slice of gold which is a triumph in regards to the reaction to constructive criticism. Almost anything that sucked in the last game has been fixed. Really, it should be game of the decade.

EDIT: And also, Fallout 3, just fricking no, kiddies. It was addictive and fun but it was such an ugly trainwreck of a game. Maybe if it used mocap for its animation or if it had dynamic shadows it would change my mind but yeah. Just no.

I second this. Maybe not the best game, but up there. Awesome storyline, and the perfect ending.

I don't think a game needs replay value, but HL2 never got me excited enough about it to bother finishing the darn thing. Especially since my last save is right before that annoying turret puzzle. Which really isn't even a puzzle. It's just pain in a can, sprayed liberally on your private areas.

The one in the room with all the lasers, and if you go through one the turrets fire at you? I played that with a friend, and so many times they just ran through one of the beams and tried to find a place to hide from the turrets, and I finally gave it a go and just went the obvious way and didn't set off any turrets.

Actually, that one sounds fun, I don't know if I've hit that yet. I'm talking about the one where the combine rush you from all directions and they give you four turrets to hold them off, except they all have plenty of grenades with which to knock your turrets down.

Oh, that part is awesome! Well, some of them are. I admit the one that I don't like is where you have two long hallways and you basically have to defend in an area between them with the four turrets, I found that a challenge.

What I was referring to is (I think) in EP1, though it might be in EP2, I can't remember. And I meant to say sentries, which are more dangerous than turrets.

That two long hallways one is definitely the one I'm stuck at--I refuse to lower the difficulty! Unfortunately, although I own Episode 1 and 2, I have resolved not to play them until I've beaten HL2. It's a vicious circle.

Well I hate to break it to you, but there's three separate times throughout the game where you have to set up turrets to defend yourself.

Are you talking about the first one? If so I just set up the turrets inside my main room facing out the stairs, so as soon as they walk up the stairs they get shot. Just remember to pick up and reset your turrets anytime they get knocked over and you shouldn't have a problem.

If you're talking about the second part, then I just set up the turrets and hide in one of the bunkers -- You're essentially invincible from all grenade blasts while in there. Just zip out whenever you need to fix a turret.

Three?? Man . . .

It's that second one, at least I think it's the second one. I guess I'll have to try that once I get back home for break (all my saves are on my desktop back in AZ).

That's probably one of my favorite parts of the game!

And hl2 has great replay value when you play with the coop mod synergy...its just so much fun.

In my opinion...

Shadow of the Colossus.

- Technically speaking it pushed the PS2 to its limits.
- Emotionally speaking it's one of the most moving games I have ever played.
- It has a strong sense of atmosphere.
- It has one of the best original soundtracks in a game.
- It's one of the few games that doesn't suffer from Fahrenheit/ Indigo prophecies syndrome.
- The game play wasn't all that bad as well.

For people mentioning Oblivion and Morrowind, are you considering vanilla or moded versions? I enjoyed both a lot too (though I think Morrowind had a better story, setting, and atmosphere) but I think it was partly the modding community that made those two games so great.

Probably HL2. The balancing act of have-to-look-it-up-on-the-internet subtlety together with WHOA-MAN-MW2-IN-YOUR-FACE action is pretty unique.

Half-Life 2 doesn't "suck", but Episode 1 does. Episode 2 is my favorite out of them though.

Thief, may have came out in '98 so it misses the decade by a year, but an awesome game.

UT2k3??? I don't really play too many games. Rarely touch a console.

There are aspects of the level design and story in HL2 that are very subtle, in fact, you would probably not notice just playing the game and might have to see them pointed out or explained on the internet before noticing them.

There is also extremely intense action in the manner of Modern Warfare 2.

This combination is unique.

That's true, all Sandbox games since then like Spiderman 2, Mercenaries, Prototype, etc. are all just iterations on the core concepts GTA3 introduced. And how awesome was the flying tank?
