Geek Culture / An odd question...

Hey guys,

I've got a bit of a medical question/concern. It's probably nothing and I tend to be a hypochondriac, but I feel like I need to ask anyway.

For as long as I can remember, I've tended to have twitchy hands. It's not severe enough for me to think it's something like Parkinson's Disease, but I'm concerned that it could someday lead to it...

I read up on P.D., and one of the symptoms is the twitching of the left pinky finger. This has never happened to me, but sometimes my hands do like to shake ever-so-slightly and it usually takes me around a minute to hold them completely still, and even then I can only manage that sometimes. I guess my question is this; is it normal for hands to twitch for around a minute or so? Or is there something wrong with me?

I know, I know...weird question, but I don't know where else to go without someone telling my family and I certainly don't want to tell them anything that could scare them. Like I said, this is probably nothing, but I just want to make sure. Thanks to any and all who respond.

Could it be Repetitive Strain Syndrome?

Though we're not doctors and if we were, we couldn't tell you through an internet forum. Unfortunately there are many reasons why your hand can twitch. If your family worry, they'll feel relieved when they find out it's nothing and will probably learn to be over-the-top and get worried so easily.

I wonder if it could also be caused by something like low blood pressure? I tend to have very close to low blood pressure for some reason. ::shrugs::

True. I'm just hoping that somebody on here might know and/or recognize any warning signs. I know there are tons of reasons people can twitch, or at least their hands. The more I think about it, I think it only happens when I'm stressed or trying too hard to keep steady.

I kind of asked my mom about it a couple of months ago. She just shrugged it off and said that everybody shakes a little bit. Maybe she's right and I'm just a big worry-wart.

First of all I would suggest that you should tell them, because it's your family, and they have every right to know what is happening to you. IF you have some kind of disease(which i hope you don't), your family are the closest persons that can help you. Secondly, it would be best to see your doctor. I know that it is'nt always easy to go see a doctor, especially when it comes to having strange symptomes, but keeping it al to yourself and waiting for it to go away by it self, is'nt a good idea. My mother was like that to, always frightened to see her doctor, or not doing what he said, but she's gone now, and i still wonder what if...

Yeah, I'm going to ask my parents what they think later on when I can. When I first mentioned it a couple of months ago though, they told me it was fine and that most everybody can't keep their hands 100% still. It's just that since I tend to be a worry-wart and a bit of a hypochondriac (only to a certain degree), I can't stop myself from wondering and thinking the worst. That's one quality of mine I hate; I over-analyze and worry so much that sometimes I can't sit down and enjoy something at the time. Heh.

I'll also ask a doctor. I know a few people, so I could actually ask without needing to pay for a doctor's visit (yay for a diverse group of friends!).

Good on you, that's the spirit!

You know, it could be alot of things why you have twitchy hands: nervosity, stress, sleepless nights, to much coffee or alcohol, not enough vitamines, paranoïa, anxiety, etc...

Well, you don't have to hate yourself because you wonder to much, you know. It's just your way of protecting yourself IF something bad should happen, and we al have our way of defending ourselves against things that scare us.

Keep it up!

I have the same hand-twitching problem. Mine is due to low blood pressure. I always have to take glucose tablets if I have no food around, otherwise my hands start twitching.

It could be from strain or overworking the tendons. Or carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis. It could even be low blood sugar.

My advice is, don't become a surgeon.

Thier are numerous comditions from sevre to little more than your body checking your still alive, and your hand is attached.

Normally the twitches are unnoticable to most people, if its evident then check it out. Belive you'd rather be safe then very sorry.

But why?

Quote: "...it could be alot of things why you have twitchy hands: nervosity, stress, sleepless nights, to much coffee or alcohol, not enough vitamines, paranoïa, anxiety..."

Ah! I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately, I've been drinking a lot of coffee, I only take vitamins like twice a week if I remember...I believe that could very well be it.

Yeah, I've pretty much eliminated the possibility for Parkinson's Disease. I asked a few friends if they ever experience twitchy hands, and nearly all said yes, usually caused after coffee. So...yeah. I'm gonna tone down the coffee a bit, me thinks...

I don't hate myself for it. I should have worded that better. I meant that sometimes I just over-analyze far too much and start worrying over absolutely nothing. However, one time I did worry about something so much and the fear of mine did come true, so I suppose it can come in handy sometimes.

Thanks for the responses all!

I have a brain condition called essential tremors which makes it to where I can never hold my hands still, not even after hours of trying. If my hands start shaking really bad, I lose all of the strength in my arms. I've known about it since I was about 6, when I had issues trying to get my LEGO creations apart. It's not all that much fun...

Well, if you add all that up, then the possibility of having shaky hands increases. But I was wondering why you're not sleeping very well...are you just a nervous person by nature, or are you someone with a low self esteem, or what?

Quote: "I just over-analyze far too much and start worrying over absolutely nothing"

I used to do that too, but what's the point? It's just more and more stress that you don't need.

Yeah, that's a great idea. And find a way to relax more and enjoy your life! And...don't forget...go see a doctor, hey?

Take a night off, relax. Keep up at this over complicating things and it only gets worse, hell ive been thier. I was at the brink of a complete breakdown, no sleep for three days, hadnt eaten for one of them, barely able to focus. Id pretty much given up on everything, it might be the generic gets his life in shape story, but belive me on this. The moment i realised they were out of my control and let go of my stress, well im still here arent i?

Go to the ocean, its alot more relaxing then you will ever know at times like this. Ive fell asleep more times than i can count, being woke by waves splasing on your face isnt as bad as it sounds.

I got back from burbo bank just before, The place where antony gormleys statues are, 'Another place'.

Aptly named.

If your stuck in the same place day in and out, your body will start to stress, go out for a bit a change of view puts you at ease.

Ohh and Twinings green tea, lots of it, it relaxs you and eases off headaches.

All the advice i can offer right now.

Ah, after my hard drive reformat I forgot to reinstall YIM; I'll do that, but I might not be on later to talk. Shoot me a message over facebook.

I don't know why, honestly. I have plenty of self-esteem, I'm not nervous about anything, I think it's just a bout of insomnia. It's only been going on a couple of weeks, so I haven't worried about it too much. I also got into the habit of staying up too late on my laptop. I've always been a night owl though and used to stay up reading half the night anyway. But I definitely need to set a limit of what time to shut the laptop off (2:30 AM isn't too desirable...).

Definitely a bad idea to stumble into a boss battle just before going to bed. Try listening to some calming music for a few minutes instead. Then you can deal with the boss when you feel bright and alert in the morning.

Well, that's the theory, anyway.

I think the answer is right under our noses:

Caffeine.

Excessive caffeine can make you shake, especially in the hands.

Yeah, like me, I listen to heay metal to calm me down.

Just kidding.

Well, it works sometimes. Drinking a cup of warm milk an hour before going to bed, also helps. Milk containes the amino-acid tryptophane, which has a calming effect on the brain. Or looking at funny cartoons to ease your thoughts, can also do the trick. Funny thoughts can take away the stress and negative thinking.

So, it twitches only when you're at your computer? Well, maybe that's because you don't feel relaxed when you're at your computer, or there could be something wrong with the sitting position (the desk can be to high or to low).

You stay up all night on your laptop and drink gallons of coffee and you're wondering why your hands twitch? I'm surprised you're not tearing the heads off small children for making noise.

My hands sometimes twitch when I am hungry, they just started doing it now actually, food time

Yeah, I know.

Well, after more research and stuff, I've found out this is a relatively normal thing and most everybody has shaky hands. Mine was definitely from too much caffeine and horrible sleeping habits (which I'm fixing tonight by heading to bed early), and also perhaps from a lack of vitamins.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice everyone!

Wait, don't give up so soon! I know exactly what it is: Cancer. You have cancer.

AAaaannnyyways, i can't keep my hand very still. I think it's just normal, because of the natural workings of your body (heart beat, muscle-somethingorothers), or over-thinking it.

yes, and get chemo. Actually, you don't even need to ask your doctor, just walk in there and get sum radiation. Second thought, they'll probably hassle you. If you just find a nuclear waste dump and roll around a bit, you'll be completely cured!

Haha, or turn into a superhero.

My hands are acting fine right now. It was definitely just something to do with too much caffeine and lack of sleep. I realized that for about as long as I've had "shaky hands", I've not been getting great sleep. I got excellent sleep last night and feel a lot better. And for as long as I can remember, sometimes it just takes a minute to hold them completely steady. It's not like my hands ever shook while typing on a keyboard or keeping them at my side while walking or sleeping. It's always when I hold them up that they kinda shake for a minute.
