I've actually been here for about 5 years, but made a new account with a new name. I actually originally joined because I had to order a model pack, but when I started chatting on the forums, I... I fell in love.

Rest in peace Heltor. God bless you.

I used the old grey official forum very briefly before RGT, to be honest I'm not exactly sure when I started using DB, it's around 10 years, give or take a month or two.

If you were on RGT, or remember 'ShadowRobert', or remember the 'I hate book' thread, then your officially an oldbie"

Like VanB, I joined here over 7 years ago because RGT and LLRGT went *poof*. I can't really remember if I used the first forum before RGT or not, it's been so long ago and this old-timer's memory isn't what it used to be.

Oh, and to get the ladiezzz.

Eventually, I'll remember how to look up my forum stats like everyone else, but I always forget.

I joined in 2002 after playing about with DBC for a bit and moving up to DBP. I used to be more of a forum helper for the noobs, but last few years I have had little time for anything other than proper work which is quite sad. Just when I think work will die down for a bit and I can get back into DBPro a shed load of work comes along and ruins it!

I thought there was a smilie of an old guy waving a stick on here...musta been a different forum.

I was at Fry's...or maybe MicroCenter...one day five-ish years ago and I saw one lonely black box with a yellow pyramid on it (and I think there might have been an evil face or something, I don't remember ). I didn't buy it . But I went home and looked it up, and bought DBP off the internet.

Back then DBP came with a PAPER manual of all the commands. Does it still? (My DGS didn't come with one)

After I post this message I'm going to click the little profile button and see if I posted anything worth laughing at 5 years ago.

I've been here for 7 years and 5 days. I joined because I was searching for a programming language/engine to make games with. After trying several drag-and-drop stuff, I stumbled into DB. I found DBC on ebay for $10. After using that for awhile I grabbed DBP when TGC started doing electronic downloads for it.

I've been here a while. I remember joining not only to get some help but because the projects were a lot cooler back then. Now we only have a few decent wips(not including the fpsc board).

personally i think this language is a good way to better your math skills, things like Algebra is horrible learning from a book, but a lot of programming requires you to use your head to find solutions.

Maybe basic programming should be included in school teaching, when i was about 7 or 8 i use to program on old BBC Computers at school, but then again I was a bit of an odd kid when i was young.

you'd be amazed how many kids are terrible at computers, despite being surgicaly attached to technology like phones....
At this point, I'd like to say if I sound old I'm not a technophobe, and I'm underage
...I think introducing programing as (UK) Secondary school Options would be the earliest realistic time to do this. we need to prioritize turning schoolchildren into mindless office workers before the part of IT which only needs a few people
(think about it, a lot more people are needed to use software than create it)

School IT departments are a shambles. The IT people know NOTHING about computers, outside Microsoft Office. If you're caught doing something other than the many exciting features of Excel, instant ban.

Total win. They are trying to teach me that in a database you can have a 'number' datatype. and a 'hyperlink' datatype. It's quite depressing really.

What I find funny is that the school I went to was crowned as a 'Mathematics and ICT Specialist School', which is a joke. Our ICT teacher spent most of the time looking down girls' tops, knew nothing about computers and when asked a question he'd say, "Look on the website". Though there was one or 2 good IT teachers.

Maths teachers. My GCSE Maths teacher was a chav, she spend a lot of time talking to the chavs at the front, she'd take a while to go around and help somebody (like us) with a problem, but if the chavs were stuck, she'd stop the whole class to explain it on the board - even if we're 3 pages ahead of the equation. When when a friend and us would discuss a problem we were stuck on, she'd tell us to 'shut up', her words exactly.

I had a hard time figuring out why it was called a 'Mathematics and ICT specialist school', I walked out terrible at maths and all I knew about ICT was learned from me being a geek.

Joined the DB community just as DB Classic V1.07 was either being released or was in testing. That was about 10 years ago now. Prior to DB i'd retired from programming.

Yes, it certainly rekindled my interest in programming too. Occasional bugs yes, but most of the time the task of getting something up and running is painless.

This.

Programming to some people makes so little sense that they are adamant that all games are made in a 'drag and drop' editor. And take very little time to create.

Thats not what he was saying, and the more skills you have on computers the more likely you are to get employed by somebody; Microsoft Office is still a good thing to have, just not a specialized one.

that "10101 Bullocks" is what you're entire computing and half your electronical life boils down to. You may not appreciate (the actually quite interesting) Binary but show some respect to the code that revolutionized the world

I found a demo version of dark basic classic on a cd of friend of mine 8 years ago. It took me a month to hook up to game programming. After a year i found out that there's a db forum and a pro version of dark basic. I've been programming ever since and joined the forums in 2005.
