Things are constantly changing in technology and what do you think the next big thing will be? What I mean by that is something that comes out, becomes cheap, other versions of it come out, and it becomes something that we forget about.

Examples:

The iPod

1. It came out.
2. It becomes popular.
3. The other .MP3 players came out (Zune, Creative, ect.)
4. All .MP3's players are cheap and effective now
5. We forgot about them and now practically everyone has one

The most recent example, would be smart phones.

In 2012 when someone tries to plug a toaster into the LHC and creates a black hole devouring the solar system.

Whatever the new techno-fad is, it will be wafer thin, shiny and have wifi access.

Hopefully superconductors that can retain their properties at a much more normal temperature. That would be truly amazing.

On second thoughts it's probably not a tech thing since you're talking about smartphones and stuff, but it would have a huge impact on all those fields so it still fits in.

Have you ever asked yourself why capacitors never heat up when in operation, where most other components do? Because when it charges, it has a positive consumption of power, but when it discharges, it has a negative consumption of power, canceling out the positive one (P=U*I). If this could be applied to other components, you'd be able to create computers that require no cooling. THAT would be a "next big thing".

Unfortunately, it's not possible.

I think hard drives will go extinct within the next ten years. Everything will be stored on servers and broadband will be so fast accessing it will be instantaneous. I've already heard of 1GB broadband, it requires special lines though, I think it's fibre optic.

A toaster that never burns the toast (or is that bread?)! It would have a built in BROWN detector. And it cooks with lasers so it is instant.

Capacitor shoes: store the static charge from walking on carpet.

Elevator cubicles: don't know where to look? uncomfortable silences? No more!

Stocking Filler: magically fills holes in socks!

Edible money: a nutritional snack for the tremendously rich.

Medieval Full Body Armour - it's coming back into fashion.

Guitaxophone - cross between a guitar and saxophone.

Folding cars - one minute it's a family car, the next it's a sportscar! need to park in a ridiculously small space? No problem!

I meant on home pcs, there would still be computers with hard drives but most people wouldn't need them.

this would either lead to extreme high prices on hard drives, since so few would need them, and therefore the servers to store info on would be real expesive
OR harddrives would simply die and... well PANIC occurs!!!

or, since prices will be so high, the ones owning the servers will make their own hard drives.

I don't see online storage going that far unless it becomes free which is unlikely. I do think HDs as we know them will all be replaced with SSDs though.

Yknow, thinking about this stuff makes me realize, there needs to be some site where ppl can get updates on all these new cool technologies. Like... Quantum computers, HVDs, the LHC, etc. Every once in a while there's a big buzz around the topics, and then months later the only information you can find without lots of searching is old!

Agreed. I think HDDs will be replaced with SSDs soon instead of massive online storage. I really don't like the idea of all-online storage anyway...I thought Google were nuts when they announced that their OS would store all of the user's personal files online. Er, no thanks. I'd like to keep my files where I can access them whether I have WiFi access or not.

or... maybe both? I mean, DropBox, Ubuntu One, and other similar cloud storage services offer free backup for up to a certain limit with the option to buy more. Store important files (pictures, documents, etc) online using one of those services. Sync your code with an online repository (GIT, SVN, etc via GITHub or Google Code or something). Sync your bookmarks and browser settings via plugins or (in chrome's case) using built in functionality. Then all the other odds and ends will stay local until it becomes important... then you push it out. This is what I do. Makes switching computers simple as pie. To summarize, I think it'll be BOTH. Not one or the other. And I think online/local will become very (even more than it is now) ubiquitous.

I would never have work stored online only, cloud computing should be about access, not storage. For example, DropBox, have it stored on the computed and online, then sync them - I simply do not trust Google to look after my personal documents, work, source code, or anything really. It's my data, my responsibility, the only thing cloud computing can offer me is backup and access, noever sole, permanent storage.

I think that traditional hard drives will die out very very quickly - SSD's will get bigger and bigger and there's too many benefits for much else to survive - I think it'll replace optical storage eventually as well. I can't remember the last time I burned a CD to watch a downloaded AVI, I use media center sharing or USB pen drives.

Oh I forgot about this thing: Unlimited Detail

I don't like the word "tech" especially "clever tech" it usually means the person has no idea what it is. It sounds a bit like people overusing "cyber" to me.

they will boot from stuff like ROM-read only memory. That could actually be good in terms of not having to reinstall or look for drivers. but that could be argued. I think when computers reach the peak of their power, they will all become universal and there will be no more stuff like different graphics cards and CPUs. All comouters will havean ultra powerful 100 core 50GHZ CPU, 300 gigs of ram and a super powerful built in graphics chip

If you have 100 cores and hi speed access to memory, you don't need a GPU.

Systems have become too regimented, we need move towards more parallel solutions, with modular hardware (LEGO PC's). So performance can be a scaled locally, or over a network.

Eh? 3D in the last 2 years is way ahead of where it was 10 years ago. Try tech from both periods and then come back here I've used both, can safely say that 3d tech is getting better and better, and it'll be perfected in the next decade. The future is upon us!

what i meant to say is that we have only gone from those paper glasses
to sun glasses
and sure, you dont see blue and red anymore, but i still think it isnt too much of a major improvement is it?
