Internet Explorer is a burden to anyone who designs websites. Even IE8 has some rendering issues with CSS.
IE would be fine if Microsoft could keep up with Web Standards.

What worries me is that it has taken them up to the release of IE8-IE9 to get compliant with CSS 2.0, I hope they are quicker with CSS 3.0.

@BiggAdd IE9 is fully compliant with CSS 3, it actually isnt that bad a browser.

The only problem is web devs will probably still need to keep IE8 support (people still use IE6...)

@data 98junkiee Silverlight is the .net approach with powerful GUI editors, it is actually decent piece of kit.

I won't count on it. But this is a developers problem. In the realm of consumers, IE still wins, so you have to code for them if you want to do business with them. Simple enough.

My opinion, keep it simple and you don't have to worry much about cross-compatibility.

I have to use ie6 at work. It sucks. What really pissed me off is when sites refuse to let you see the content with IE6, and just tell you to go get a better browser if you want to see the website.

Thanks, cuz I use ie6 by choice

Sipgate did that to me, guess who doesn't use sipgate now (even at home)

@Fatal Berserker I'm not saying it isn't decent in terms of what it can do. I'm saying it suffers from serious compatibility issues more so then any other web standard I know of.
Its quite an obvious way for Microsoft to try and shape the web to suit them, personally i avoid proprietary standards like the plague, they often work out bad for everyone but the company that designed them. I advise anyone I know who is involved in web development to avoid stuff like Silverlight. No matter how how versatile it seems things like Silverlight can be quite harmful to net-neutrality and web cross-compatibility. Also quite frankly I'm unconvinced that Silverlight is anything special (I haven't seen anything based on Silverlight that I haven't seen before in Flash and Java). Like I have previously mentioned WebGL is on the horizon and its open source and tbh i think that will be much more healthy for everyone who isn't an MS employee.

End of line.

The issue with webgl is that the final output appears open-source. Correct me please if I'm wrong so I can start studying it. As far as I can tell you can only really use javascript which can't be (truly) compiled

Don't get me wrong, it's good for opensource, but it's bad for certain businesses.

@jerico2day well i don't know have only seen demonstrations of it and i must say it is impressive. This may be a silly assumption to make but i assumed WebGL is to websites what OpenGL is to software.

End of line.

Well right, except that browsers don't render compiled/encrypted code, as far as I'm aware.

I'd like to know if anyone knows of a cross-platform scripting language that runs in the main browsers and can render webgl.

If you do, I'd learn it.

More choice is never a bad thing. Let MS invest the money if they want to create a competitor for Flash. This is especially good because Silverlight dev is free! Isn't it better to have more than 1 or 2 options to choose from if you're a developer?

I still have IE6, but I very rarely use it. I still meet people who haven't even heard of Chrome. Most of them love it after I install it.

I avoided installing Silverlight for a long time, until last week when I found out Netflix uses it. So if I wanted to watch my batman cartoons I had to install it.

Personally, I like anything that competes with Flash. I hope more people stop using flash. Youtube is already working on that.

Here's a feature that Silverlight has that Flash DOESN'T. The ability to keep one screen in full-screen mode while using my other screen in a dual-monitor setup. Flash annoys me in that it always exits the full-screen on the one monitor when you click anywhere on the second monitor. Yes, I'm aware there's a hack for it, but it's not a real Adobe fix, and this has been a problem forever.
