I use XP.
I had windoezzz vista, but then switched to linux, and, after being pissed off at wine, decided to switch back to windows. Thing was I couldn't find my backup CD, so I had to use this XP installation disk.

The whole thing taught me that I don't really care about the OS, as long as I can play video games. (and code in DBPro!)

errm, actually, I had like no crashes or freeze ups with linux. I would have preferred to stick with linux, but I had already invested a ton of time getting everything working (Arch Linux) and the realization that I would have to tinker for hours every time I wanted to get a new DirectX application running just set me off.

errm, the downside is that XP is like the most virus prone OS out there, since it's been out the longest and people like to target windoezzz.

I have XP, but just setup a dual boot with 7 the other day. I also run 7 on my laptop dual booted with linux.

I acctually downgraded to XP from Windows 7 yesturday. After you used Windows 7 long enough, you see that it has a lot of bugs. Its better than Vista, but XP is still the best for reliability.

There is still a compatibility issue with Windows XP, I can't get some of my old programs working correctly (I am a big fan of some old games).
Windows explorer crashes sometimes.
Icons sometimes don't appear up when you create a file. And they sometimes don't disappear when you delete one.
sometimes the mouse won't lose focus of the task bar and will still play the mouseover effects even if my mouse is on the top of the screen.
XP has far better RAM useage.
It died of blue screen of death on friday after I did a system restore.

I am using XP purely for Dark Basic. I hope Wine gets upgraded so DB works on it properly, then I can just use linux. I am using 3 OS's at the moment and it is getting confusing!

I am on Windows 7 64 bit, and have been since the day it was released and have never seen any of this happening =/

In fact, I have never received any kind of error while on Windows 7. The only thing I wish that it did was provide the ability to easily put in your own custom icons for the libraries...which you can easily do that by editing the xml file for the library.

But I haven't seen a computer with XP in a couple years.

I'm using Windows 7 but the only 2 errors I've had were sound issues and the already mentioned file not appearing or disappearing when created or deleted. However I did quickly fix this because it was a legit reason for it not just a bug, forget why though.

Yea didn't like the look of XP, not modern enough for my liking

A annoying bug I have on Windows 7 is creating folders. When you give it a name, you get an error message about not being able to rename the file. Hit cancel and it's named anyway, so its just a false error. But it comes up every time I create a folder. The MS fix that was suppose to address it ended up causing more problems and still didn't fix the issue.

The only problems I've had with my Windows 7 PC have been compatibilty issues with older games. I've never had any of the problems that kaedroho and Phaelax described.

Actually, that makes me think. How is it that windows is so buggy? Is it one of those things where they just add new code to fix the old code? I would think an umpteenth generation operating system would have most core bugs fixed!

First of all, I'm not sure what you mean by 'so buggy'. I have used Windows 7 for a long time now and have only encountered one bug that sometimes occurs when searching a folder by first letter.

Secondly, you would be surprised how easy it is to break software when bug fixing (especially software as complex as Windows). Speaking as someone who has worked on a SQA team, I know that resolving even a small bug can cause big problems elsewhere in the code.

A lot of the time those crashes are down to 3rd party shell extensions.

Vista here, haven't had many problems apart from file transfers getting slower over time.

Although deving on Vista in classic mode I found no difference. :S

XP on my desktop and netbook, Vista on my laptop because it doesn't like XP. I still install XP on every PC we buy at work. I can install XP while snoozing, got it down to a fine art .

Its usually third party drivers or dlls that cause it... Personally i have never had any problems with 7.

I'm running Win7 64bit on my laptop, and so far the only "problem" I've had is that some 3rd party CD burning software wouldn't work for me.

Other than that, everything has worked that I'm used to using

I disagree here, I have had no problems while using Windows 7 and have been for the past 9-12 months. I recommend it to anyone wanting to leave XP behind. I suggest you skip Vista, that really did do my head in when I used it.

Still happily using XP on my laptop but struggling with Vista on my PC.

I still can't work out how to find certain files on Vista despite reading the Help several times. For example, I wanted to check whether there were any rogue copies of svchost.exe on my PC. I just couldn't get Vista to produce a simple list - it produced a list of 5000+ entries, most of which seemed to be irrelevant and then started "filtering" them and just took forever so I gave up . I'm able to produce the list in an instant on XP.

But Vista looks nice.

I use XP still, I really don't see the point in upgrading to anything else. My pc is a bit of a dinosaur anyway, and probably wouldn't handle vista or 7 too well. Plus, I refuse to give AMD/Intel/ATI/Nvidia, or whoever, anymore of my hard earnt money to upgrade my machine. My pc runs everything I need it to, and I don't want or need any of the very latest software or games. So, upgrading really is pointless for me.

What I mean is programs crashing without an error, occasionally not being able to close an application that isn't responding, slow bloated startup times, bloating over time, etc. Basically things that just prevent your system from operating well. :S and I've heard plenty of stories about bugs like described.

Iunno, I just see more bugs each release and the same core functionality (functionality with plenty of room for improvement!)

I use XP still because I'm on an old computer, so I'm still one of the cool kids. However, later this week, when I get my new computer, I'll have Windows 7 Pro...so in running XP mode I'll be like the kid at school who pretends to be cool in order to get in with the popular kids, but deep down is really just a loser. Story of my life.

The only thing that annoys me about Windows 7 is that when an application crashes, it simply displays an error saying "blank.exe has stopped working..." and then exits. I'd really like more information, like XP.

Using XP for my development machine (dual boot though) and Win 7 on my laptop. I tried my best to just use Win7 on my dev machine but had so many sound hardware issues (older Audigy Platinum sound card) and issues with older software not working, it was unusable.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll have to read into it.

To be honest, I only started using Linux because I had to, and at first I hated it because to do most things required using the terminal and I had to search a lot of forums to find what obscure commands to type. But now I have it working how I like it I don't want to go back to Windows. Especially now Ubuntu 10.10 is here, I think even your average-Joe-technophobe would be fine using it, even more so than Windows. I just wish DB was linux compatible Oh yeah! Virtual Machines! we'll see...

Still using XP at home, and 7 at work. I don't have any issues with either one, but I've found that my VB6 wont install on W7 so I can't code on it, but whatever I code with VB6 on XP runs just fine on W7.

Haha, I love VMWare for all the compatability stuff I do. I can run extremely old games/software, some of which can't even run on XP.

OSes I've got on it:
Windows 95
Windows NT 4.0
Windows ME
Windows 2000
Windows XP Home Edition (only one I had on me )
Ubuntu 10.x

And I'm using Windows 7 for the host machine. Lol, I've had this PC for about 4 years now, it was considered a gaming PC by Dell back then. It had Vista before, upgraded to 7 upon release.

I run DBP and most current programs on Windows 7, and with no problem. However, I have some older programs that will not run on Windows 7, and I seem to recall that they would not run on Vista either, so I have a spare computer that I use for them, running XP. I had to use that spare computer much more when I had Vista on my main computer. I was so upset at Vista that if I did not have the spare, I would have "upgraded" from Vista to XP.

I got rid of my vista because as far as I'm concerned, anything would have been an upgrade from that horror. I think the only thing I could get to run decent on it was ... the command prompt lol.

Hmm I have the opposite feeling. With each release there tends to be less errors. Windows 7 has been the most rock-solid OS I've ever used, right from day one.

XP was out for years before I switched to it. I only recently started using 7. From a stability standpoint, many issues are resolved before I even start using an OS. The only exception would be Win2k, which I had used since the first beta release. But even then, I got lucky with the hardware in that PC and it was among the first parts to get proper driver support.

yeah there's so many factors with OS stability it can pretty difficult attributing blame.

Before XP, I was running WinME. Lot's of people had nothing but problems with it, but for the most part it ran fine for what it was being used for.

Windows 7 is very stable and I was very surprised by how well it ran in BETA, now I can remember Windows XP back in 2002 and my troubles with it made me hate Windows (and having had Win 98 SE before that), so I'd probably suggest that XP wasn't so brilliant on release, it was Windows XP SP2 that stopped me struggling and allowed me to go "okay, windows isn't really all that bad", with Vista I had a few troubles, but nothing major, though it was too bloated IMO.

The only trouble of course is backwards compatibility, but Windows 7 Professional is supposed to combat that with Win XP Mode, I'm not sure how well that works, but I've just ordered my new laptop with Windows 7 Professional installed, so I'll be able to test it.

Compatibility wise it handles everything pretty good. Once you install dx9c it will run practically anything even if you have the 64 bit version. I can run all my games on it and the only exceptions that I have found so far are a few win 95 apps. I believe you will be very pleased to give the system a good workout Seppuku

I HATE XP.
it is sooo slow
so... many... bluescreens.
so many unnecessary NONCORE PROGRAMS RUNNING (gamebooster <33)
and the multitasking is worthless <<again, bluescreens>>

I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW OUR SCHOOL COULD FORCE US TO USE IT THE FIRST YEAR?!

nooo, Windows 7 in my heart.
but then again, Vista is WORSE than XP... and thats NOT good xD
