I don't know anyone who's seen the BSOD on XP, it's rather rare. Your unnecessary 'gamebooster' program isn't installed with XP. I only have 38 processes running at bootup.

I've probably seen maybe 3 or 4 blue screens after years of using XP? Always ran very stable for me. Usually drivers are the cause of such problems. Although Vista also runs stable for me, and people always talk about how much it sucks... maybe I'm just awesome when it comes to using computers.

I have seen a lot of BSODs with XP..

and when i use Gamebooster (no not installed with XP, but it really should..) there is what? maximum 15 processes on.
you see, you dont NEED more than the process which are on when u are in safe mode
maybe a few more as safe mode is slow as hell
but all those which are on startup, most are unecesary and simply serve to slow it down

thats not the issue tho, the issue being it is so darn unstable!

It was most likely some unstable software you had installed, or hardware that wasn't very well supported.

I'm still using XP, if it aint broke don't fix it. I'm extremely resistant to change. But that said, one day I'll upgrade my 10 year old computer and I suspect a new OS (Win 7 probably) will come with it. If I'm lucky they will be up to service pack 6 by then and all will be good.

Cheers!

Using XP on my notebook, Windows 7 on my desktop, XP is far more inferior then windows 7, and im not one for change.

XP has alot more problems then ive ever had with 7, and 7 is alot more helpful in doing things automatically. For me, When XP and Vista were the main OS's around, i was pulling in some good money fixing peoples computers, nowadays with windows 7 i get maybe 2 calls a month, which isnt really worth the gas money.

Someone who cares about being able to run direct x programs.

And im not saying OpenGl is inferior, its actually superior in my book, its just microsofts over-encompassing business (monopoly) dictates what is what in the computer world (for now). And that is direct x.

DUDE! DOS! We use it at work, it's not broken, so they've not paid any expensive to upgrade anything (except broken stuff of course). The computers aren't even networked, so we have to use a floppy disk at the end of the day to transfer data. I probably wasn't even born when that was considered high tech.

Although the computers we use to access the internet are XP.

Well I'm not really a gaming fanatic and the majority of games I like run fine under Linux but for something which costs the whole of O £'s I think it pretty awesome, it does everything I want and more.

The serious computer bit made me lol a little. Linux is probably as serious as it gets, something like 90% of the worlds super computers are running it.

End of line.

But only something like 5% of the worlds desktop computers.

Using Linux does not somehow transcend you into the higher echelon of computer user, using the best OS for the job, with an open mind does that.

I think its funny how people think using linux makes you a "1337" computer user. When I use linux, I feel like I've regressed in computer knowledge because I don't know wtf I'm doing!

I personally think that Linux is okay, BUT, whats up with "doing EVERYTHING by the console/command thingy"? i mean, if i want to reach something on my deskdop I DONT USE THE COMMAND THING TO REACH IT, NO I CLICK IT!
i really really dont see the point of it, not at all.

You don't have to use the console anymore, there's a gui for most of those commands. But haven't you ever typed ipconfig in XP's console?

I use that command practically every day, but you can just right click your network tray icon and click status. Personally I quite like DOS, it's reliable, even when doing things like FTP transfers I'd rather use DOS and scripts than a windows app. It's so easy to automate, compared with most Windows programs.

I'm completely different I feel I can type my through and 'dir' directory's really fast (its almost like second nature to me) so it is a lot faster for some people.

You can't take benjamin seriously
I think I've said it but I'll say it again, I use Vista because it's all I know. I also have XP and it feels clunky and old, and Vista feels new, and because I'm both a pathetic cheapskate and a very simple user, I have no need to upgrade.

I've been using Windows 7 since October and have been pretty happy with it. Of course, I was perfectly happy with Windows Vista, so maybe my opinion is irrelevant.

On my main laptop: Ubuntu for 2 years now. I switched from Vista then when Windows 7 came out I switched to that for a few months to see how I liked it. Switched back to Ubuntu and have never looked back.

I have Snow Leopard on my Mac Mini.
ChromeOS on my CR-48 (going to switch it to Ubuntu Netbook Edition here soon enough, but I want to give ChromeOS a good shot and give Google feedback on it.)
At work I use Ubuntu. It's amazing for a dev environment. They had Vista on my first machine and Windows was a pain to work with. But I do still use Windows XP VMs to do IE tests with.

I've switched from XP to Win7 and back to XP within the space of a day.

Although I don't have the hardware acceleration for VirtualPC (or if I do, it's turned off and I can't be bothered to change BIOS settings), WinXP Mode is still quite responsive. So, the best of both worlds. I might try running something like Final Fantasy VIII in XPMode to see if I can still get smooth 3D graphics and I doubt FFVIII will run in Win7 without some tweaking.

I was actually thinking about finding a second-hand copy of XP and re-building an old computer I have lying around, installing XP on it and use it for older games. Sure, it would only be able to support up to 3.5GB RAM, but if it's only for a few older games I have lying around, so what? I also might use it for game development with older software (DarkBASIC Classic anyone?), but I almost doubt it. Maybe just for 3D modeling/animation.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on my laptop, and I've had a few occasional bugs. My taksbar likes to flicker a LOT for some reason, though I suspect this is because of the Intel Accelerated Graphics Chip. I should look into updating the driver, maybe that'd fix it.

I've also had trouble getting DBPro to work on it, at least with the default IDE (Synergy?), and every time I install a plugin I have to remember to start DBPro "as administrator", or else it crashes and locks up my laptop. That annoys the pancakes out of me. Other than that, I can't really think of bugs I've encountered, it's usually software-specific (like with DBPro).

I am currently on my awesome laptop with Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, but every day at school i have to use XP. Even XP runs slow on my school's 240MB RAM Pentium 4 computers

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

It's probably bogged down with extra software... my XP computer runs perfectly fine. Also, 240MB is not really enough RAM to run well. I have 4GB, which I think is the maximum that XP can handle, I haven't had any problems with that yet.

@quik & Dark basic dude79 ,
The problem is the amount of memory installed. 256 is barely enough to do anything but run the OS for XP.

By far my favorite OS is win7 but I still have a couple pc's with XP on them

i switched to windows 7, but i get the feeling that windows 7 made me lazy as everything is simplified. i have a computer i built to use with win xp (i designed the build to be more suited to3d modeling/ game development) but for some reason i dont use it.

I recentley reinstalled win xp for my friends computer to replace his vista. and even tho this guy dosent know anything about computers at all- he never even used his because of vista, he was sooo insanley happy when he saw how fast xp runs on his laptop, i have never seen anyone quite as happy after switching to XP lol

hmm the only thing was dos was you didnt have a mouse. to view the available directories all you needed was dir /whatever. The advantage is dos made you think about the directory locations that you put things otherwise you would have to search endlessly to find them. I cant remember dos ever locking up though.

As for os choice.. i think hardware plays a large part in the compatibility of the os. Definately windows 7 is oriented towards more recent hardware. As well i would expect a brand new pc would have trouble with xp due to the fact that not everyting is supported by xp.

I use xp still on my current desktop. I do have a new desktop that uses windows 7... (but due to ups i have to wait till moday to get it because they required a sig and i wasnt home.) so ill let you know what i think of that when it arrives.

There was nothing wrong with vista except it needed a decent computer to run well. I liked vista too 7 is better though.

i am gonna reinstall windows xp on my laptop. I feel like using windows 7 made me lazy because it never has any problems, or bugs out or freezes, With XP i needed to know the system pretty well in order to mantain it and diognose problems and i generally know XP better than 7 but 7 is just so easy to use.

Also i it seemes to be that even tho windows 7 always works smoothley, never crashes or freezes (well xp dosent either if your hardware is good) but i noticed that 7 eats a lot of memory. all of my computers with win 7 on them eat minimum of 1.5 gigs when they are not doing anything, even when i turned off all the backround processes. I have 4 gigs, and that was always enough for me, never ran out and never bothered to check the task manager even top of the line games, on full settings with firefox with 20 tabs open still didnt even slow anything down, But recentley Ive been playing world of tanks and their engine is very ram hungry, so thats when i noticed that 7 takes up a crapload of memory, same with my notebook with win 7 also at leas1 gig sometimes 2. XP takes up very little, when idling, it takes up 300 mb and up to 1 gig max if i am not doing anything too demanding or have 100 tabs open in firefox

so anyone else notice that with 7? or is it just me?

Hmmm, that's strange. I've checked just now and 947MB is being used on mine atm, I only have a TGC tab open and Skype.
I would try to do a 7 XP dual boot, but I've heard that doing that with 7 as a starting point can get ugly.
