But you're treating steam and piratebay as though they're the same kind of service.

@Indicium
1. I said, quote,
Quote: "I might be wrong on some of this, and I am sorry if I am"

2. Sorry If it seemed that way. That's not what I meant for it to seem like.

3. I meant to say the Pirating Games is harder to get in trouble for than pirating music/movies. I went a bit in depth by stating some of me and my friend's opinions. Sorry about that.

@CoffeeGrunt
I find that offensive. Really.

Sure legal torrents exist! I mostly use them to download copies of Linux, and sometimes programs use a torrent system to update (like Blizzard games). Also the free music site OCRemix.org encourages torrenting their stuff because it takes a load off of their central servers when you're downloading a lot. I think its a good system in its concept, but unfortunately its paved the way to unshutdownable mass piracy.

I didn't say that.
That would Be your assumption.
Usually, parents know nothing of most modern tech.
ALso, I didn't say she was stupid.
Also, they way you remarked to Incidium's post, it's hard to see what you actually mean.

people actually still get offended by mom jokes?

just to make it clear:

Quote: "1.When you pirate that of previously mentioned, you're getting an exact copy (Hopefully) of what you want. This is a copy of a licensed copy."

exactly.

Quote: "2.When you buy games off of a network, like Steam, you're getting a LEGAL (un?)licensed copy of the game. Now, don't fight me with this. My sister's friend bought Dragon Age 2 LEGALLY off of Steam. When she opened it, it said that it was an unlicensed copy. She couldn't buy any expansions or online content. The would happen if you pirate it, right?"

you get a legal licenced copy which should work exactly like a retail one.

Quote: "3.Steam is not the maker of the games they sell. They only make some of them. The files are just HOSTED ON THEIR SERVER. If similar files are hosted on an illegal server, but serve the same purpose...is that okay? "

iam not at all sure what you mean here: steam is a service that helps companies sell their game and also serve as a nice database for the games you bought, aswell as a nice community thingy for people. I am not at all sure how selling games for companies that asked you to sell them is in anyway similiar to ripping a game and uploading it onto a torrent, without permission for free.

Quote: "4.Steam makes you pay for the files they host. Torrent Sites do not. Again, they try to serve the same purpose."

steam makes you pay for the files they host and they give money to the companies that owns the game license, while keeping a small portion themselves. Again there is a big difference.

Quote: "5.Since Steam does not own all the games they HOST, they cannot ban everyone who pirates their stock. Only people who directly own what is pirated can sue.
"

pretty much, with the exception of valves games, like Half life and TF2

Quote: "6. Again, Only People who DIRECTLY OWN the pirated software can sue. (I might be wrong on this)"

and the publisher, if there is any. iam pretty sure they share the license

Quote: "7. Since neither Torrent Sites or Steam directly own what they have up for download, and they both have clear Terms of Use, which ones are wrong?
"

steam doesnt own it, they have permission to sell the games
torrent sites doesnt ask for permission.

iam not at all sure about what point you are trying to make aside for comparing steam to pirate bay

and for the record, I am a man.

It's fine.
You don't have to get it, I just wanted to put it out there.

Quote: "It's easier to go after the pusher than every one of the junkies, but again we run into the problem that the pusher doesn't hold the drugs, making it difficult to charge him with anything. Add to that the pusher is normally in another country where laws may be more lenient or non-existent.

At some point, we may start to see more pressure placed on hosting companies and service providers to police the web, but doing so across oceans is going to be tough."

+1, totally agree. Let's just hope they keep the anti-pirate antics to a minimum, more pressure on pirates less pressure on legit customers.
