So... I don't know if anyone's noticed, but I have a weak spot for fluid simulations. However, they require a LOT of computational power, so that even today's gaming rigs would struggle, should a simulation be added into a video game. However, shallow water simulations and erosion simulations looked like they would be perfect for a game! Since there isn't a game I know of where simulations like these are at the heart of everything, I figured "Oh well, maybe I'll be able to make one some day".

So, imagine when I found out that there was a game that has a fluid and erosion simulation at its heart, and that this game was a god game!

The thing releases tomorrow for Xbox Live Arcade (on july 27th), and on august 17 for PC (there's a Steam page for it, but you can't preorder yet).

Here are three dev diaries. It's not an indie game, it's by ubisoft, so they aren't very exactly diaries and they don't really cover many aspects of development, but they're still awesome as trailers.

Interview with Eric Chahi (lead designer)

The next peter molyneux?

Although I still want to get good enough at programming to write simulations like this, this will definitely tide me over! Until this comes out, I suppose I'll have to play with other simulations.

This is the game I'm anticipating the most (until skyrim). Forget RAGE and dead island and saints row and what not!

[edit]
Woah weird grammar error. I don't know if I accidentally deleted a sentence and a half or if I actually didn't type it O_o
[edit2]
also, the wikipedia page on it has a lot of interesting info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Dust
[edit3]
also, it's $20.

AAAAAAAAH THE JERKS!
There WAS a link where you could buy it early.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.SummerOfArcade-From-Dust
but now it's down. And I've read that the games get put up around 4-5AM... whether that's west coast or east coast US time I dunno. I have a test tomorrow at 9:30 so I can't stay up till then... guess I won't be able to play it till I get home tomorrow D:

Looks very cool. Something new and fresh, thank God! I have a feeling it might frequently drop FPS though, especially during the tsunami action.

Hm, looks like Newegg needs to hurry up shipping my new processor, will need something better than a dual core to tackle this baby.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Looks amazing! - I liked Black and White 2, so this is right up my street. As long as it stays sandboxy though, no need for player progression. That's the one thing that annoyed me about B&W2, spending ages making an awesome city, just to move onto the next level every time.

I'm a little disappointed. I've completed the story and there isn't really a decent sand box level.

The last level is sort of a sand box, but you are forced to build totems in order to use powers, which is a bit silly really.

Graphics on the 360 are a little poor too. I wouldn't mind if they were "poor", but they've tried to give as must detail as possible, but they've sacrificed the resolution in the process. It just looks really fuzzy.

Story mode was fun, but without a better sandbox mode, I don't see the replay value.

I don't finish most games I own, let alone replay them, so I'll probably have fun with it for a few hours anyway. I *might* wait for it on PC, though, so I can have some better visuals

I used to not finish games, then I started not being able to afford a new one every month Jeku, I envy you. I concour with waiting till the PC version is out though, I can't manage without steam anymore.

Didn't like it all that much. It was fun for a while, story mode is extremely fast. Then challenges are average.

What it really needed was a free-mode, in which you built your own worlds. And choose either to save it or doom it. Watch your life build civilizations etc. Because it was just to dull.

On an upside the dynamics are fantastic!

Ahah yeah, but the story mode was entertaining 100% of the way through!

The mechanics, simulation, and world seemed really fleshed out, but the sandbox mode and the player interface seemed a little bit hacked together. It's also really tempting to just kill all your AI teammates when they run straight into lava. I swear, I was holding back a wall of lava (sucking it up, dropping it elsewhere, using water, and all of the tools in my godly arsenal!) for like a minute, and they still were having pathfinding problems. When they finally realized that their god was working at full force to keep back the tide of lava (and realized that the path was right in front of them and not around everything and through an ocean), it was too late, and they all died.

I've been looking forward to a simulation game like this and I was not disappointed!

However, it would be nice to be totally independent of the civilization, and just mess around, causing tsunamis, volcanoes, springs and what not whenever you want wherever you want, without having to worry about totems!

It sounds like they have expansions to this planned.

Only one person has said this... shame on you all! haha, but yeah I too felt this game was kind of rushed through production... my guess is they plan to release massive patches to address early known bugs and just get some revenue in... looks to be a pet project from Ubi with a french team... I am however inspired by their influence, I just hope they donated some fresh water for those natives to live healthy if you follow me and not just benefiting from their culture...

My two and a half pence

I'm really enjoying this so far. It still needs optimising for the xbox though. It stutters along in cutscenes and it has crashed every time I have played it. It is very good but I have a feeling it will be one of those games I never finish.

I don't get it.

------------------

I'm fairly certain this isn't based off any real native tribes, so Ubi doesn't have to feel like they need to donate anything for ripping off cultures. I'm also fairly certain there are no tribes out there that can dance away tidal waves and the sort.

I also don't get it The French are very innovative with everything, I'd say they are the only innovative game makers left on this planet actually... The rest is all about "COD8" and other stupid first person shooters

lets leave it there... hee dont want to elaborate on it... just read up on extortion or something... I just believe original sources must always be credited for whatever input they bring.

am I not right in saying Ubi is just a publisher and not exactly a developer themselves? I have heard they finally entered the development market themselves a few years back though... but mainly theyre a publisher living off of smaller teams... I did like their games though for some time... then get bored of them eventually...
long story short... come on they ruined ASSCREEDII would have been nice to play it on a plane or something... but oh nooooo.... you must be connected to our hugely unreliable servers...

nuff said, lets move on children (Chef, South Park)

hmm... I don't have any issues with it. Then again, I think I'm using one of the newer versions of the 360.

This is definitely worth the buy. Errm, there isn't much replayability. Once you beat the missions you're more or less done, but it's a lot o fun. I wanted a simulation based game and I got one!

@MrValentine - You are wrong about Ubi--- they have always been a developer and publisher. The studio in Montreal does most of the development work, if I remember correct (Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, etc.)

Oh yah, and please STOP DOUBLE POSTING. Thanks.

urgh, how did I double Post? sorry for that one... didnt see it happening... oh well, but yeah I still feel any game they make I get bored of easily... maybe not engaging enough and always repetitive too often... ASSCREED and Prince of Persia... never played SplinterCell but I got the original Tshirts that still glow in the dark

I couldn't wait until it unlocked on Steam, I bought it a few weeks ago. I'm up to level 4 and it's pretty fun so far.

If they added a map maker and more of a free play mode it would be amazing.

Finished, smooth sailing really. Few snags that were irritating but pretty good game. Lasted 2 hours. I did sandbox a bit at the end but meh. Seeing this as a sandboxy-leading upto a proper game that will use this sort of thing. Pretty much a demo of what to come?

I was incredibly hyped about this game, but then I read this:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/18/from-dust-does-need-online-badly-ported/#more-69963

Ok, I understand DRM is sometimes helpful and I don't mind one-time internet activations. But it looks as though From Dust requires an always-on internet connection like AssBro, despite the fact it's single player.

So, now I'm not going to buy it. If they reverse their decision, I will. But I really don't like how Ubi seem to think they can walk over consumers with no consequences.

It has the spirit of what a videogame is actually ment to be...unlike firstpersonarmyshooter 2445

...bottomline: its great
