The only thing I don't like about that announcement is the 11/2/11 date. Seriously, Rockstar North are in the UK, whats with the american format date, hell even americans are embarrassed by their date format.

Anyway... I'm hoping it's more like GTA:SA, bicycles, character customisation, airplanes, and no bloody cell phone.

Yeah, that kind of confused me.

Anyway,

Im glad it's coming out, hopefully it will be as sandbox-ish like San Andreas and as graphically pleasing as GTA4,

Skyrim and ME3 will both make my year...

I might get this. GT4 didn't really appeal to me, though. I preferred the random fun of San Andreas and Vice City.

I was just thinking yesterday that another GTA is about due

GTAIV was not as good as San Andreas imo, it seems that some people agree too.

What made GTA so special was the freedom, I used to play for hours without ever doing a mission. Instead of giving more freedom they opted to just update the graphics for GTAIV which I think was a shame. It did look amazing though, was still a very impressive game imo.

More freedom please, even at the expense of 'go there, kill them' missions

Yeah, I think even Rockstar know that San Andreas is much more respected, not that theres anything wrong with GTA4 - it's still the most technically impressive city game... we're all just keen to see how cool the engine will make San Andreas now.

I used to get lost in the game with SA, like I'd be cruising along, then spot some rival gang in the distance, so I'd plan my attack - spent absolutely ages doing the gang wars. Or I'd be practically dead, trying to get home, while rival gangs or cops are chasing me, on my little pink chopper bike.

It reminded me of those early 90's persuit films, like Trespass, and Judgment Night, or even the old classic Warriors. Mostly, the first half of the game at least felt like you had a neighborhood, and you'd figure out the fastest ways to get home, and it was a damn good rush to be chased there .

Have to check it out. I rarely follow the actual missions; I mostly love to just run around causing destruction and areal acrobatics...whether with a plane....or a motorcycle.

I seem to have the opposite opinions of most of you, I loved GTA 4 and not so much SA What really did it for me in GTA 4 was the Euphoria engine. My friend and I used to spend hours just placing shots on people and seeing how they reacted, specifically enjoyed shooting coffee out of people's hands If they keep the euphoria engine then I'll be happy.

I once tried to shoot a guy in GTA4 and I nicked his cell phone. The look on his face before he ran off was priceless. GTA4 is the pinnacle of the franchise IMO. Can't wait for GTA5.

Gah, I once had GTA 4, it got really old and i sold it within a week, by far the worst in the series, no matter how technically advanced it was, i doubt GTA 5 will be any better.

I lost my interest in this series after San Andreas...I don't know. I played them all and its just not fun anymore to me. However: knowing Rockstar Games, they are certainly delivering a solid game again.

Rockstar Games sacrificed graphics for better gameplay when developing GTA:SA. With that attitude, there's no wonder it was such a big success. Lets hope they remember this when developing GTA:V.

Does anyone have any guesses about what city it's in?

I would personally love to see GTA set somewhere other than America (for a change).

Perhaps they should return to London, or visit another European City. Large American cities are so boring to explore(because they were built in a grid), whereas most European cities follow a more random structure.
I would love to see GTA set in London or Rome. Would be so fun!

Wherever it will be set, it will take another year to come out (If they launch it in a similar fashion to GTA IV)

I loved GTA 4 until one of the early motorcycle missions where I died about 15 times. After that I gave up and sold it

Well thats the idea, because American cities were built relatively recently, they had a chance to see how European cities were built and then improve on them.

The idea of the grid system is to easily reference a location and to ease traffic congestion. (Although it wasn't the Americans who first came up with the idea, I believe the system dates back to the Romans)

After the great fire of London, Robert Hooke and Christopher Wren actually proposed separate plans to rebuild portions of the city in a more organised fashion.
The plans were rejected and the city was re-built to its previous design.

Paris would be great, or Rome.

Any city which is not a grid(as pointed out) and perhaps one with huge landmarks.

Then again, Liverpool would be awesome too as I would know the map already

True, but every time you start the game you'll just get stabbed and then mugged.

I can't go to the shop without getting stabbed at least 4 times in Liverpool.

It is a problem, I don't know how many more times I can get stabbed before I start to get upset, at least in GTA I will have a rocket launcher

If you are from Liverpool and the following message have made you feel discriminated or has agitated you, please feel free to contact The RSPCS (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Scousers).

Anyway I hope it goes to San Andreas again just because of the sprawling landscape around it besides the cities.

Because you grew up with it. I'm American but I've never been too fond of the format (well, mainly because I usually use big endian in filenames so that it gets alphabetized properly in folders with a large number of documents).

Yes; we are the last holdout for the inch, foot, etc. You don't know how frustrating it is to work on Army Trucks using both sets of tools. One part can be attached with a metric and standard bolt! I still use a 24-hour watch at work (prison). I wouldn't have any issues with losing standard measurements.

I like how few people I talk to know what the unit "slug" is. It's basically just the US measure for mass is.

Anyways, I'll be back in a four-score, seven years and a fortnight. I'm going twenty fathoms out into the ocean, and then 3 leagues down to do some research on this 10 acre piece of land on the sear floor.

The only other GTA game that had that was San Andreas with Los Santos.

If they include that area, wouldn't it be safe to assume this is a San Andreas Remake ? Just a thought...

UK's date format is the most logical, I mean, jeez - days make up your months and your months make up your years, so day/month/year is the most logical!

However, I've not played GTA 4 yet (I didn't actually like San Andreas that much), but I might keep an eye open for this, I do remember having great fun with the GTA games.

Not necessarily a remake. GTA 3 and GTA 4 took place in Liberty City, but they are different story lines.

I'd love a HD remake of Vice City, to me it was the most solid game (with the best soundtrack) because it didn't try to do too much. The story was interesting and the landscape was the right size. That being said, I want a new GTA game with a new city.

My prediction is that they will go with the capital city, but that's my prediction because that's what I want.

I also agree with BigAdd on ditching the whole grid based system, problem there is that there aren't that many places to put your foot down as you'd spend most of your time sliding around corners. A mix of the grid based system for the main town and then long sprawling country lanes would be a nice balance.

I really don't feel like arguing this but I'm going to anyways because you irritated me by saying I only agree with it because I grew up with it. That's ignorant and annoying.
In speech I say, 'Today is October 31, 2011. When I write, why on Earth would I not write it the same way I say it? It doesn't make sense not to. How is it logical to write it d/m/y anymore so than it is m/d/y? It's not. Unless we said 'Today is 31 October, 2011, I'm not going to write it 31/10/11.' I'm going to write it the way I say it.
