Ok, so we're not all relentlessly developing games. Occasionally people drop a comment about something they do other then game dev, and suddenly they become 10 times more interesting. So I thought it'd be cool to get everyone to chime in. What is your main hobby (or hobbies) when you're not sitting in front of the computer playing or making games? No gaming hobbies allowed!

My main hobbies are writing electronic music and also motorbikes. It used to be cars, but motorbikes are more fun and a lot cheaper. I know it's a big ask, but any other bikers on the forum?

Hit me with your non game dev hobbies!

My aunt and uncle are bikers , they also go see bike shows every year. Though I'm not one myself.

Writing would be my other main thing. I'm also a storyteller, though I've not performed anything since moving back in with my parents. But I did enter Young Storyteller of the Year 2010, though I didn't win anything, but still, it was pretty damn awesome. Though I don't have any recorded performances of me doing any storytelling, so I can't embarrass myself in front of you. I've done other spoken word stuff, but not properly performed any of it.

I used to study Karate (Shotokan) and want to get fit enough to do it again, I got to 1st Kyu (1 before black belt).

Also, as a metal-head I love going to gigs and festivals. I've been to Download 2006, Wacken 2007, Bloodstock 2008, Wacken 2009 and have got tickets for Wacken 2012...so I've seen quite a number of my favourite bands and still have loads more I haven't. Also, I'm pretty happy I got to see Heaven and Hell before Dio passed away and I was in awe watching them.

Didn't find any good pics, but this is me Storytelling, but it just looks like I've been goosed.

This is the only time I've ever told stories to children, my usual audience tends to be adults performing in clubs. Also, standing next to me (I've cut her out) is a British Sign Language Interpreter as we had a few deaf kids, she had only recently passed her exam and she did pretty well keeping up, especially as she wasn't working with a script.

Guitar. I play out a lot at bars and such. Cover a lot of Hendrix and Zep.
Books. Books is not stupid and I read tons. Mostly Fiction.
Hang out with my wife and Daughter. We do a lot of things together.
I also cook a lot. Whether it be stew (eating some now), chili, burgers, cake, cookies, enchiladas, pizza (from scratch), etc.. I usually cook something every day.

Me too dude. Purple with white. Not sure if I could do it again as one of my knees doesn't like twisting forces much anymore, and one of my feet get knackered when I stamp about bare foot on hard floors (something wrong with the ball of my left foot), but I'll be sure to kick you in the head if we ever meet. I know you'll be expecting it.

Main one is mountainbiking, I couldn't live anywhere that had no local trails.

Other than that, movies, reading, trying to pass as human.

Bought a Halfords Apollo thing about 2 years ago. I know they're a rubbish make, but it was a decent one. Never EVER used it though. It's brand new. Still has labels on it. I don't appear to do bikes without engines in.

Nice. Not the part about the knee though, I did manage to injure my knee doing Karate once though, doing a thrust kick but my supporting foot didn't turn quick enough, nothing major, just meant I sat with an ice pack for the rest of the session and limped for a couple of weeks. If I started going again, I'd probably be on the floor out of breath pleading to some deity for mercy in like 10 minutes...at least considering how hard our instructor made high grades train and how unfit I am.

Lol, and I bet the response would be "girls' butts are icky" followed by disgust on the parents' faces. Still it wouldn't beat the Cheerleading squad at the University I went to, when kids were being shown around the University they thought they'd do a routine that involved them cheering to Gary Glitter. Apparently that one got a few complaints.

Exactly that song. Admittedly I couldn't stop laughing and my friend just sat there applauding them. You've got kids running around and 'Come on, come on!' is blasting out of the speakers. I'm surprised nobody said anything when they did the same routine a couple of weeks earlier at a American Football match.

Still at least, their stupidity didn't reach national news, unlike this student from the same University:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2065643/Student-Danielle-Morgan-trapped-clothes-horse-cut-free-crew.html

I kind of getting the feeling being smart isn't an entry requirment.

I do a fair bit of cycling, used to be off-road but now I mostly just play in traffic.

Motorbikes look incredible fun. I just don't see how you can ride one without serious injury or death. No matter how many people try and convince me otherwise.

I listen to quite a lot of black metal, think a fair bit, and read books. Occasionally I even do the usual things with other people.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

It's the same as a mountain bike mate. If you're the sort to trundle along level back tracks at a snails pace, you're never going to fall off. If you're the sort to do full speed down hilling with jumps, eventually you're going to hurt yourself.

Motorbikes have a bad rep because they inspire foolishness, and smacking into a car at 90mph is going to kill you, but there are plenty of people who ride sensibly all the time, and have never had an accident. It's just, the only ones you see in videos or catch your attention on the street are the lunatics.

So, they're as dangerous as you make them. I would go as far as to say, you're much safer on a motorbike doing a commute than you are on your push bike cycling to work. You're being overtaken by inconsiderate motorists and riding in the gutter. I'm matching traffic speed and owning my road position. It's only when motorcyclists start filtering past traffic, speeding in built up areas, and other such things that it becomes dangerous.

It's only as dangerous as you make it. I'm no nutter. I just like to make it semi-dangerous.

Playing: (Hide and) Seek and Destroy on my guitar!
Posted: 22nd Feb 2012 18:54 Edited at: 22nd Feb 2012 19:04
There are a few hobbies/passions that I have besides game making. One of them is (metal)music. Not only do I adore listening to all kinds of metal (heavy metal, death, black, grind, blackened death, and a bunch of others), but I also like to make my own metalsongs. I've been playing guitar for 15 to 20 years now, and before that I've played the drums and also keyboards/orgue. But, I also make other kinds of music, like electronic, house, trance, atmospheric, and others.
One other passion/talent I have, is playing billiards.
It's been almost 30 years now (makes me feel old ) that I've been playing billiards (bumper billiards or bumper pool, pool, snooker).
I may consider myself being rather good. I've played against men who play in second national division, and beaten them.
Actually, a few weeks ago, I did a trick shot that is quite hard to do (see image).

The white circle represents the ball, and the green arrows show the movement of the ball. The idea is to play the ball against the bumper in front of it, and then make the ball jump in the air and make it move in the opposite direction you aimed at going straight into the hole.
I've tried this shot maybe hundred or more times, and never succeeded, but a few weeks ago, I finally managed.
There are a few more trickshots I can, but not as hard as this one.
Drawing/painting is one more passion of me, but I don't do is as much as I used to. Made a few oil paintings, a comic book about a Ninja (lost it when my first girlfriend fired me), and other drawings.
Nowadays, I keep my artistic skills digital.

NOTE: for those trying to do trickshots, I'd suggest first to learn playing billiards REALLY good before attempting trickshots. I've seen enough guys wanting to show off or be 'cool', but failed terribly while attempting, and even had to pay big time for the damage they did to the billiards table, or even persons that where standing around the billiards table.

Cheers

Besides drinking and women....

I spent 90 percent of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted!” ~ George Best

1. I collect and use (sometimes programming) 8-bit computers. Mainly Atari & Commodore.
2. Guitar
3. Electronics
4. Art; mainly sketching, pastels, or rapidograph

5. Quad Roller Skating. And I mean Freestyle-Quads!!! Not blades, in-lines, verts etc.. Old School 80's Freestyle. LoL! It's actually a great workout.

For those not familiar,, here's a youtube clip from the 80's, at a local rink "Skate USA" on Long Island NY. These guys were older than me,, and Yeah... I know it may seem silly (like a lot of things from the 80's) but I still think it's cool!!!

Currently we have only one indoor rink left on Long Island =(. So most of us have turned to outdoor Jams and RollerQuad. Like this...

I love football. I watch every game I can, used to train three times a week and play at state level in Australia. It's a very consuming passion, but I just love the magnificent moments you can have. It's a massive high. This and cricket are two big passions. Football for the beauty and skill, and cricket for the statistics. Love me some statistics.

Generally, sports are something I love. I'm good at most things I put my hand/foot to, so it makes things easier.

Scotch is also a passion of mine. I would be pretty sad if I was in a world where Johnny Walker didn't exist.

Besides that, I generally like being outdoors. Camping is so good, especially when it's really off the beaten track, with a few close friends. Some of my best times have been in the wild, and I love that.

I train In Tang Soo Tao (korean Karate)and Yang style Tai Chi.
I am a 2nd gup Which is 2 gradings away from 1st dan(about to do a grading for 1st gup in 2 weeks)
my weapons of choice are the 4 foot Jo(staff) and the Jian (one handed double edged sword)

I like to draw and to create digital art. when i have the time, space, will and energy I paint in acrylic.

I play pretty much any stringed instrument and play basic percussion, singing and keyboard.

I used to busk a lot when i lived in melbourne, but now live in a small town and there's not much drive for me to do it.

I enjoy sound engineering and have a home studio I record in.(when my PC is back online, its still dead )
I play and record music in pretty much any style or genre, in the past I have been in metal bands, rock bands, experimental avante guard...i guess you'd call it a band, jazz funk, solo acoustic, duo acoustic, electronica, i've done one soundtrack for a short film. most of my earlier life was music based.

I enjoy philosophy, no one persons ideas in particular but thinking about the universe and consciousness have been a pleasurable pass time.

I have also enjoyed studying various religions. I am not religious. I just enjoy decoding the various descriptions of the world these people live in. some are beautiful and fascinating and its easy to see how people follow them, others are frightening and at times have literally given me a headache or made me feel sick to the stomach.
I'll even listen to madmen and try to see their sense(been there myself so can sympathise)

Now that i actually think about it, i think my favorite hobby is learning, its one thing i never get sick of and the process always excites me.

so ill stop rambling.
They're most of my hobbies that aren't game design based.

I love to just drive for hours, especially in the middle of the night with some Moby playing. I don't care what I'm driving just as long as I'm on the road with music

Hmmm.

I take karate, Shotokan to be specific, and it feels like anytime I talk about anything seriously on these forums, it's about that very subject, haha. But I'll refrain for the time being.

I play guitar, though probably not nearly as long as anyone else on the forums. About a year of playing 'seriously", and that's being generous towards myself, heh.

I also dabble in drawing, and consider myself decent for the amount of drawing that I actually do. No big projects or masterpieces yet, haha, but I imagine I'll get around to dedicating myself to a few pieces one of these days just to gauge my potential.

3d modeling is also a small passion of mine. I used to do it almost religiously every day for some time, but now it's rarely that I do it. I'm taking engineering classes at the moment, and some portions of it focuses on 3d modeling, which is pretty cool, but that 3d modeling is almost completely different from game media in my eyes, but that might just be me.

I dabble in writing as well, but that's probably me just trying to scrape things up so I can say I have more than just a few hobbies to speak of, heh. Again, I haven'y focused myself on anything more than a couple thousand words, and even then I hadn't taken it too seriously. I think I'd feel much better about callings things hobbies if I would just dedicate myself every once in a while.

Also I golf a lot when it's in season. That's probably the most physical thing I do, honestly. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing either, haha. I'll usually shoot around 10 over par, or less if I'm feeling good that day. I've taken a summer job at the local course as a maintenance guy just for the free golf and minimum wage. If only the working conditions were better, then it would probably be my dream job, haha. Unfortunately, most golfers are complete bastards (don't know if I can say that, )and are a complete pain to deal with socially. It's almost impossible to find someone who appreciates well raked sand traps these days!

So many people on this forum do shotokan or martial arts in general. I feel perhaps we should create a TGC Ninja club, where we sit around programming games, with occasional moments where we leap out of our seats and beat 7 shades out of each other, before bowing honourably and returning to our codez.

Akido here and I started some Tai Chi, which the movements are oddly similar.

I also run, like to go beer tasting and build scale models. I've recently taken up liquid fuel rockets. Plan on getting my license and I want to build a 3 stage, ambitious but I'm determined.

I just started back at the gym (yet again) and I intend on having a montage, so I will need to create a playlist on my iPod of decent montage songs. I've got Northern Kings metal covers of 'We don't need Another Hero' and 'Don't Stop Believing' on my iPod already. Eye of the Tiger would be the obvious choice, so I'm gonna dodge that.

economics, both makro, and micro (micro is like one selfes private economy, and macro is like the whole world, and the countries economics.

Well,, I don't have much more intrests, I'm not that much of an intrest guy.

oh,,, yes,,, I like walking, watching movies and HEAVY METAL!!!

I used to play in a band (I played the bass guitar) The guitarist of that band moved on to play with scarpoint, some or someone of you might know of them since they have released records.

I still write music, I focus then on game music.

I had a nice response for this typed up, then my computer restarted for a windows update

I try to do a bit of everything, keep my mind open. I have at one time probably tried anything you can name. Any normalish thing anyhow. What do I do now?:

Aggressive Skating (roller blades)
Some paintball and airsoft
Soccer (football )
Drawing
lacrosse
reading (I love Eoin Colfer, Funke, Paolini, and James Herriot)

And somehow I always end up on the art side of my hobbies as well. I uploaded some photos of my lacrosse head, which I dyed. I felt it needed to stand out a bit, so I gave it a patriotic look.

edit: gotta love compression.

I fool around with computers and I play a lot of guitar(for the past three weeks, all day long ) and I also play bass guitar. Which means writing songs, recording, fooling around and researching some fav bands and their techniques.

I'd say my main hobby besides game dev is making videos.
I'm in my first year of film school so it's still a hobby. And it'll still be a hobby for the next ten years or so until I get a good job.

On the bright side, this is a screenshot from a video that I'm making.
