What are the best DarkBASIC games ever, in your opinion? I'm doing a small article about indie games and DB and i wanted to create a small showcase of pure masterpieces!

Soul Hunter

comes to mind... its amazing wish I could play the full game...

I say Wish as I dislike sites like mediafire as its hosted on which asked me whether I would like a gf or not...

if zzz ever reads this... I would gladly host his game... simply can not manage to download it...

It depends if your looking at DarkBASIC, DarkBASICPro, or both.

For DarkBASIC, well there's always the Starwraith series, easily the most impressive and complete DB games. Soul Hunter is pretty epic of course, Tito the bouncing alien is another good example.

For DarkBASICPro, or DBPro, there's more of a choice... Evochron is the continuation of Starwraith, in fact it's now available on Steam. There's also Carnage, check that out in the WIP forum, pretty violent but awesome. If you want to show the pure graphical power of DBPro, then there's Samurai Legends (WIP forum), a very pretty Samurai RPG. Also Evolved's tech demos are always worth a look, especially the terrain demo with the water effects and bloom and all that good stuff.

Evolveds terrain editing and shaders:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EesOqjHH2fE&list=UUm6lUybUJUJTRZans-dKL2g&index=15&feature=plpp_video

Mike Inel made some amazing stuff:

Which
Where
Illusion of the Tower

zzz:

SoulHunter

Bizar Guy:

Dream

DBer:

Lab Rush

I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of anything else right now except for shamelessly promoting my own games

Aww, whenever one of these threads pop up, someone always mentions Dream, and that makes me sad because I always wonder what happened to it, go to WIPs and check it out, then realise there's been nothing for years. It was awesome, that game

People have mentioned Mono, but not Echoes.

Echoes was my favourite Binary Zoo creation. I also bought Echoes+ from XBLA, but obviously that's not a DBP creation, but an XNA port.

It's really addictive, I think my highest score on Echoes+ is about 7 million, whilst on the regular PC version I think 2 million was my highest. It gets really challenging the further you get in, but it's really awesome...and as I said, addictive.

I quite liked Mike Inel's creations, they were really well done, but he never really finished any of them and he kind of stopped posting after he put a hentai easter egg in a game he submitted to an official competition without telling anybody. It did cause a bit of a stir, but meh, people do stupid things and people soon forget that it ever happened.

Dream was awesome too.

Dumbow and Cool was another, it had a review in a PC Magazine, but sadly Drew didn't make much money out of it.

Remember *years* ago everyone going nuts for quite a while about Equilibrium? And if you really want to roll back the years then the main buzz around this place in 2000 (ie. before Apollo) was that marble madness type game that Dr Av was putting together.

Cheers

Equilibrium was looking sweet and then the people making it just disappeared of the face of the planet. I saw their website and they were working on something else but that was the last I saw of them.

Damn, Equlibrium was so long ago... makes me feel old just thinking about it.

They were pretty cool people, husband and wife, coder and artist, I think they are professionals (professional artist for sure), so maybe their work just got too much and had no time for it. I guess it's easy to become disconnected from our little world. Good job some of us have no lives, we keep the community going with our undying development cycles .

I remember Dr.AV, he made a texture transition tool that inspired my first ever DB app (vantrans)... now who remembers vantrans and vanseam - come on it was only 10 years ago or something like that. I miss the old competitions and the buzz they created. Even messing around with the Quake3 model conversions and demos that Raven made back then, back in the long long ago, before Apollo and RGT and DBPro for that matter... back when people used the built in editor for DBClassic - now that is old school!

Vanseam rings a bell for some reason, although I wasn't here 10 years ago...must have spottted it somewhere.

Damn, I feel old for having been a member for 8 years. Not sure how you must feel.

DBClassic, I remember giving my copy away to a friend when I bought DBPro. Some nostalgia right there, some of the demos that came with it, I remember them being awesome too.

Would love to see another Official TGC compo, I would totally enter.

Oh God "Which" I just played that game for the first time in awhile a few days ago... Still the most creepy game I have ever played. Does anyone know how to find the heart? I have only found the head and succumbed to the stabbing.

He started (but didn't finish) another game:

Who

Storywise it seems like an interesting project, it would have been cool to see where he was going with this.

I was lurking pre RGT and started posting after the move. I remember being really impressed with Equilibrium, Inca etc. I also remember downloading Vanseams to edit my textures for Matedit. Duo, Mono and Echoes were all very addictive, but I've got to say that my favourite game made with DB was Axes of Evil, too bad Yarbles never finished it.

Last I heard they decided to port Equilibrium to Blitz3D as DBC (pretty sure wasn't DBP at the time) didn't quite cut the mustard for where they were taking it. Probably died a little while afterwards at a guess. If I remember rightly there didn't really seem that much to it but it did have really good models that the wife put together.

We're going to have to start celebrating a decade of DarkBasic quite soon for many of us! (Some of us even longer!)

I think they were also working on several other projects such as Chaos Moon and maybe another before they finally called it quits(I think they also were changing full time jobs as well from what I remember).

I hear that it's pretty terrible. Apparently a 5 year old could do better in paint.

Wait...one moment, I think I was just possessed by Old School for a second there, I'm every so sorry, please don't hurt me.

I remember that, that was a pretty awesome project, as you say, too bad it wasn't finished.

Haha, nope TheComet - they're running tests at CERN now. Last I heard their supercomputer BSODed running it. Seriously though, props to zzz for sticking with it in DBC and ending up with such an awesome game.

Oh and for Mike Inel games, Where was great too.

My favourite would be (based on how much I loved the original) that Spitfire Maverick game based on Sopwith that Fallout did, but never released. Come on Fallout how about just chucking us the exe to play the unfinished game? Pretty please? Or perhaps the entire project so someone else can eventually get around to finishing it? Ah go on you know you really want to

Cheers
