Hi!

I would like to respond to your questions before I update this thread:

@Betrayal92
Quote: "Wolf i got a question...the cell stuff is from any model pack?"

What "cell stuff" ? Just link the image so I know exactly what you are talking about.

@007

Quote: "Dear wolf,

I really admire your skills with fps creator, dear bro.

Really, your level design always look awesome, and in my opinion, you are one of the most skilled fpsc users."

Thank you! I really appreciate your feedback!

Quote: "Indeed, i never was able to do such amazing lighting using standard FPSC lighting system.
"

I'm getting this response rather often. People also text me in messengers about this and I never quiet know how to answer. I mean: there is no secret thing I do or anything. I can however refer you to this tutorial:

Lightmapping Tutorial

Thats all I can do

Quote: "also i will use 3dsmax lighting and shadows to create the lighting environment on this game."

Thats a great idea! I aim to design larger parts of gamelevels in modeling software aswell once I finished this project.

Quote: "my Goldeneye 007 Fan game"

Best luck with that!

@Metaldevil123:

Quote: "I love your creative ways of using entities, that no-one probably never intended to be used that way."

Sticking things into things is what they call art thank you!
Actually...thats the most fun part of leveldesign.

Quote: "In the 3rd last screen, I don't think the cabinet looks quite right."

Yeah, its a bunch of stacked "stock ww2" cabinets. A terrible waste of polys if you think abou it. I'm not that happy with that room either

Quote: "Or is it just a part of the nightmare and is meant to look like that?"

No, that's still part of the "real world" in the game And I don't think cabinets are going to be that big of a thing in the nightmare levels

Quote: "Also, in the movie theater picture, wouldn't the pillars block the light from coming to the silver screen? or is it just the angle, but it looks like it would be blocked.
"

Its the angle, the light goes past them. I removed them anyway as it would still block half of the image and to be honest, that room wasn't that great anyway.

Quote: "Anyways, it's looking great, and I'm definitely keeping an eye on this."

Thank you!

I'm no Wolf, so I don't know for sure, but I think they are from Kravenwolf's prison pack? I think it can be found on the forums (for free) still. Not sure about that either.

@Metaldevil: that is correct thanks for replying for me.

Quick update!

I made some progress with the game and felt like sharing a few thoughts. I aim at telling the story with strong visuals that should represent certain ideas which is why I will be most likely forced to model a lot of extra props for this title (which has been originaly designed to be as lazy as possible...but I guess thats just how creativity works). I already made like 30 entities including variations and I'm just getting started with the more abstract levels.I show you all of this later.

Lately I remade and reimported Benge's G3 from Modelpack 6 which is the most prominent weapon in this game. And yes! There will be weapons in this game for two reasons. 1: I always wanted to make a game featuring the Modelpack 6 Weapons which I never did. 2: Its a horrorthemed game, no survival horrorgame or similar. I don't aim only to scare you, I aim to do a lot of artwork and convey a story while making a fun game.
Besides the usual retexture, soundexchange and Airmod polishing I also mapped all textures on a single image and attached a customized shader to it which makes it look faboulus in motion. I made a screenshot to convey hot it behaves.

Weapon Shader Demo

Upper: facing lightsource
lower: not facing any lightsource

as you can see, the shader adapts to its environment and is gentle on the hands while a lot more intense on the gun itself. This is in itself not a big accomplishment, I just want to point it out, that even though my game has a strong overgrained and overbloomed style to it, the gun never shines like a christmastree while I see a lot of other FPSC titles where the shader effects are so overdone that it hurts the eyes. Most of the time they look like shiny plastic. Thats a major complaint I have about shaders, they are rarely used in a decent way. (to be fair, in FPSC they are a pain in the rectal area)

Thats enough of that

Don't worry, clocks will only be a big thing in the second interval.

A friendly music composer I met on Moddb made a bunch of neat ambientmusic for my game In fact, this will be a great contrast and addition to my ...slightly more insane musical pieces. You should definately check them out and his other stuff:

Catathrenia BG Soundtrack

I also wrote (yes! wrote...prepared and thought about and all that) a bunch of possible riddles and puzzles to build into the game. Most of them are hard work and I will certainly drop a lot of them as I simply don't have the time. I just hope I can get your interest in some of them as I don't want to bore you with "find the switch and drag the box over the platform" puzzles.

Now, a few more images and I hope to see you all next update.

Feedback and questions are appreciated!

Your lighting design is outstanding for a reason, your a very good artist with an eye for form and chiaroscuro and you obviously are aware of your natural surroundings when you understand how light scatters, this talent is something you cant teach people it comes through experience, though as some know you can get get results beyond natural when your the creator of your own little 3d world.

Awesome! Its one of those threads.

While this is a very flattering feedback, especially since its coming from you, I have to admit that this particular talent is one of my weakspots when it comes to drawing and painting. A friend I once showed some of my traditional work was astounded how bad I am at working with lights using a pencil or a brush while being a lot more sophisticated using 3D Applications (FPSC and UDK to name them).
I follow artlessons for the next 2 years so lets hope they push me in the right direction. I am determined to become an artist since this year.

Which is one of the beautys of working in 3D ...even though I doubt reaching this point in fpscreator

Dear Community,

I would like to start this update with clearing out a few questions that came up on various platforms:

*********************************************

Quote: "Any expected release date? "

Yeah, about that... while I usually bring up september, lets be honest here. I dont get nearly as much work done on this or anything else as I anticipated so it might drag on until winter.
However, I still aim to get it done in late september.

Quote: "Is this in any way related to frictional game's "Amnesia: The Dark Descent""

This came up in some Euthanasia reviews as well...one lets player even summed it up as "a free Amnesia". Except for the "ia" in the titles which must confuse some people, its both not even remotely related.

Quote: "Will there be a free demo?"

Sure! A 5 or 3 Level Demo.

****************************************

Alright, lets get the update going.
Bad news first: I had to delete 6 entire levels. Yeah! there is a lot of work going straight down the drain. Those maps where simply not working well, went too hard on the memory cap or wheren't fun to play. If you are working in a wierd setting like this where there isn't that much realism to hold on to, you still need to give the game some sort of grounding and sense of danger or you hit the player over the head and the game ends up being boring. You can also not string together 4 levels of pure puzzle solving and story elements or you lose the folks who are not that invested in the storyline, not yet really into the setting or just want some relieving action. You gotta get the player to get chased by something or the entire hostile athmosphere gets lost. There is a lot of work involved to get a game like this working in fpsc.

Bottomline, I had a hard cutback on progress but it made up for better flowing- and more coherent gameplay.
I got to work on the health system which invites to explore the level (we'll get to that later). It strongly relies on the use of various chemicals and items you can find and you can carry 3 flasks (healthpotions) with you.
In fact, there is a passive inventory (keys, puzzleitems and ingredients) and 2 active inventories: (Weapons and Potions).

Things you carry and can consume are allocated as icons on the left side of the screen (very small and stylish icons...dont worry, I wont overload your HUD with crap) In Fact, the health-o-meter isn't visible at all and can only be triggered by pressing a button. You'll see what I did there once its finished.

I've been thinking about adding a few more weapons. It has 3 so far and since I clear the inventory of any tools and documents you dont need anmyore there is room for infinite guns. If you got a stellar idea that would suit the setting, feel free to air your mind. ...I've been concidering a crossbow btw.

You will also get mechanical puzzles to solve...this is not part of one of them. In fact, thats just there to spice up the first chapter's scenery.

I really like this room. There will be a lot going on in it aswell

Don't worry, I won't overuse windows as much as the screenshot reals might make you think

That thing is... I dont know what that is either

Well, you get a lot of readingmaterial in here too...but hey, in other games you just get a screen full of text, here you can run around with it.

Thats from the "desperation" subchapter...its very minimalistic

I finally have a good setting for the dogman character...so in your face! He has new sounds too.

If you have followed this thread, you might have remembered me designing a stalking ghost where I left away any shader magic and went with a simple texture... these are the shader designs that I will recycle into something cool later on.

I would also like to use this update to thank Ross tra damus,The Cosmic Prophet and Doomster as they really helped me and provided a lot of artistic material to forge the look and feel of this game.

Alright everybody!
Thanks for reading! Opinions, feedback and ideas are appreciated!

This happened in most of my games

And I really hope you can overcome the limitations of FPSC to make Catathrenia the game you want it to be.

Hey Wolf!

Gotta say I'm loving how good those screenshots look. The sharp details in the textures, the overall desaturated feel and dogman!!! Well if I had to see dogman I would probably excrete myself.

Excellent work man!!!

Okay, you can open a thread about your project on the forums so you can get feedback.

Okay... again, if you think your leveldesign is good, feel free to open a thread in our work in progress forum. However, I don't get the part of you using my "assets" for an insane asylum. I never released any insane asylum assets and if you took any out of games I made...these aren't ment to be reused.

Okay, I'm available for paid work starting in august... feel free to contact me and we work something out.

Hey there! I hope you remember this game because its been a little eternity since the last update. I must apologize for that but I have been rather preoccupied (again) and most progress I made does not statisfy me just yet ...at all. You might anticipate some major progress but I'm afraid I can't show you anything new or particulary interesting at this moment. It just felt like its time to send a little lifebeep out there...to show that this is still alive

You may not believe me but even though I have a lot of experience in this genre, mixing horror with surrealism in FPSC is extremely hard! There is a fine line between eerie and engaging and boring/ineffective and detaching. Having the constant threat of hitting the memory cap in mind, I made a lot of nice assets and levels and deleted them again as they where simply not "do-able".

There are some good news aswell though

I did dig in my collection of models and found some cool character models. I've put some efforts in these assets and would like to present them to you:

You think you can handle this guy?

At this moment, I'm not sure what monsters and fiends will make it in the final release but I can tell you that I will try a lot more to make the models I already have look threatening and creative and to create new ones to match the games theme.

I tweaked the shotgun so you have gunlag, reoil, shader effects and you will only reload as much shells as you fired.

The screenshots might be a bit dark. Its a roadside motel by night from a memory sequence.

This game is going to send you back to school...

Alright! Thats it for this update! I hope you haven't lost interest and I certainly want to read your feedback.

Don't forget that you can check out this game on IndieDB and you might find something interesting about indiegames on my blog

If you like what I'm doing and you want to support me or if you have too much money you can donate to the production of this and future games by donating to my paypal account.

Haven't lost interest, as everything's looking great! The characters look really good, awesome work! You just keep on surprising me. On the motel sign, the "vacancy" text seems to be on backwards, but I'm nitpicking, because it's really hard to find stuff to comment on It's just great.

The doodle you made also looks really cool. Creepy and surreal, like most of your stuff I've seen on DeviantART and here.

How do you get a black skybox seems like its never looks right when I do an outside level how do you achevive a small depth of field view with out door levels , just like you pic when I try I always see the line where my ground
Ends doesn't seem natural and I don't want to put a fence or rock to hide it all around I want the player to see what I want but outside how do you archive this , it ,ay be a simple solution but I haven't figured it out ,
I'll try to play around with skyboxes when I have time but some help would be cool ,

If you don't have pitch black ambience there is nothing you can do about that except hiding it with entities or segments.
