Only when you use both of these, and that you understand that its what you like that counts, will you understand that Blitz isnt evil.

I think ill get blitz. Sure DB has a much more immpresive site, better community and products and seems more user freindly. One thing is I mean no offence to TGC but the blitz showcase kicks our ass.

Nothing wrong with blitz3d. I bet if I stumbled on it first I would've bought it, but I found db website first. Yea, Blitz3D has some kickass games, so that means we gotta start doing some real work.

"any helpful comments about how dbpro can do teh same thing"

actually according to DBDNers TGC has been thinking about implementing an entity sytem in DBP for a while but they don't know how to implement it. by that i mean thy're not sure if they should leave the old limb commands in, or replace them, or what.. personally i think they should just get rid of the limb system. leaving it in will do nothing but to bloat the language even more than it is now and confuse newbies who don't understand why there are two heirarchy systems, one crappy one and one good one.

"Funny, they call us the Darkside"

hehe it's cool being evil.

Blitz is a great language to use.

But,

Dark Basic Pro can do alot more with the DX 9 support it has. Better effects. I think it's a little simpler to use if you've use any other kind of Basic. DBP sprites are better and the sound and music commands may be a little bit better. The new shaders will be nice if I ever figure them out.

Blitz games don't seem to have as much of a compatiblity issue with video cards as DBP does.

If I were going to make a nice 3d with high in effect DBP is the way to go, but if I want to make simpler shareware and freeware games for older systems I would use Blitz. I like both of them very much.

you control entities (objects, lights, matrix's (terrains), cameras, everything) using the same command set, and you store their data to names, not numbers like we use in DBPro.

"What is the entity system?"

in DBP we have

position object
position camera
position matrix
position light
position particles

etc. so we have all these position commands (and rotate commands, and scale commands, and color commands, and the list goes on) when they all do the exact same thing -- position something in 3d space.

so instead of having all these duplicate commands, blitz has one:

PositionEntity

you can position lights, cameras, objects, terrains, ANYTHING in 3d that can have a position.

this also opens up a few opportunities. you can make a heirarchy ststem built out of anything. so you can have a light be a child of an object (stick some headlights on a car). or just make it easier to build mesh heirarchies. if you've used DB's limb system you'll know why something else would be better

not to mention all you have to do to make a heirarchy is use one command -- EntityParent. there is no other step. just parent the entity and voila.

Makes me wonder why we had limbs in the first place. Entities just seem so much more efficient, or is there a plus to the limb system?

Maybe TGC and BlitzSoftware should work together to make a new language

It'd be great, it'd break rivalries, and bring two powerful communities together.

I have a registered copy of Blitz3D, so a quick summary for those who have never used it:

1) It is very well organised - the entity system is fantastic. It is possible to emulate it in DarkBASIC (see the Code Snippets forum). Many features are very flexible as well.

2) It is a bit backwards though, it only got cube mapping and normal mapping a few weeks ago. Lacks some important features like SET CAMERA TO IMAGE. It isn't anywhere near as flexible as DarkBASIC Pro when it comes to plugins though. I started a version of BGUI for it, but the lack of internal access was quite annoying.

3) It is faster for 2D, but slower for 3D. Depends on the system quite a bit though.

4) The userbase tends to be older and some of the guys there are extremely experienced. The downside is that it is harder for newbies.

5) It cost 2x as much as DBPro. Edit: This is if you live in the UK and are able to buy DBPro from Amazon

At amazon.co.uk you can get DBpro for around $60- only within the EU, though.

"but can't you render to an image buffer?"

nope. cameras only render to the backbuffer. you can then copy from the backbuffer to an image or texture, but of course that'll cost you some speed.

I bought Blitz 3D the day it came out. Never really used it.

Saying that, I bought DBP the day it came out (pre-order), and apart from those VB apps for the editor I wrote, have pretty much done nout with that either.

Hmmm. I am really lazy... and crap with money...

Cheers

Yeah, I thought Rap was supposed to be the new age 'music'... that is if it can be called Music at all, it's about as musical as someone shouting racist insults at you really, really, really fast. That's just a matter of opinion though.

Btw, thank's to RobK for the brief run-down of Blitz compared to Dark.

But, is there a full comparison anywhere? or somewhere that even has two one-sided comparisons?

Just so that i can compare the two languages...
