In the north state we also tend to get a lot of smoke from field burning (usually rice farmers I think, but I could be wrong). Usually starts right when the weather gets nice too

That would totally be me - I've been in snow one time in my life (that I can remember) and that was a deliberate trip to SEE snow. I've never lived in an area where it snowed, when it got too cold the rain just turned into hail
