Here's some facial animations from HL2. They are in game shots (HL2 doesn't have any cut scenes)

I'm impressed with how the whole face 'talks'. Not just thier mouths, thier whole bodies move; thier hands stress out words like this:-

Are you sure that those are actual in-game graphics? That's pretty amazing. I've heard that the eyes dilate too. If those are in-game graphics then will the game run on my 1800+? Where can I get the video from? All the site I have tried have asked for membership.

Yeah. That's G-Man. He's improved a bit.

They should run on that computer if you have a decent 3D card. Miniuim System requirements are 700Mhz + 64MB card. Valve say that you need about 2GHz and 128MB card to get those graphics.

In the G-Man pics you can see there is a spotlight on him, and you can see the spotlight in his eyes!

I got the video from fileplanet. Its a huge download (600MB - its 20 minutes long). You need to sign up but it is worth it.

In the video they say:- "The eyes glit based on a radiosity calculation of the local illumination" which means they blink more in bright lights.

You can get information here:-

http://www.planethalflife.com

That has loads of screenshots (including one showing how much the G-Man has improved)

This is probably the most impressive screenshot:

This isn't an ingame shot but it is ingame graphics.

So in summary, this is what Raven has said:

Quote: "on the whole it doesn't particularly improve on most FPS games"

What? Name some other FPS shooters that come close to HL2's interactivity. I expect them to be as good as:

- Telephone cables being blown about by helecopters
- Bullets rocking cars on thier suspension
- Characters reacting to you staring at them and knocking over stuff

Quote: "thier Materials System is hardly impressive"

That's just stupid.

Quote: "they didn't have the duck ability"

Err... They did. Soldiers were always ducking behind boxes and throwing over grenades.

Quote: "made it realistic movements and little idiocies"

They do have little idiocies. You can tell that G-Man is very calm and that Alyx is worried from thier movements, Alyx looks like she is pleading in the screenshot above. The facial expressions were designed by a professor in facial expressions. I think he would know.

Quote: "they generally can't get close to each other either"

That's wrong. They can touch and knock each other over.

Quote: "they're not a solid colour like HL2's"

look at the above screenshots. The shadows are not a solid colour, and they react to lighting conditions.

Quote: "there are NO Videos of the ingame graphics."

There are.

Quote: "Square won the sodding animation award from the CG Committie for the 4th year in a row for thie Cg and Game Animations."

They won it for thier CG, not thier Game animations.

Quote: "just because something ain't out officially doesn't mean i don't get the chance to test them out"

But the fact that they have released no demos for beta testing means you don't. Unless you work at Valve.

Wind'Diel is an online video of the past 15minutes of online play running at 250kbps @ 160x120x8 how the hell can you determine anything from that!?

and i'd love to see these so called Videos of the ingame of FFXI because Square-Enix haven't released any, nor have they authorised anyone else to release any either. So i'd make sure that your looking at FFXI footage and not FFX footage, and also make sure it is the PC version your watching not the Playstation2.

The facial animations in FFXI are surpassed by non, unlike HL2 the animations aren't being created to compliment an audio fill ... they're there to replace actual talking with emoticons. The entire body language is far better, which is more impressive to me considering that FFXI's models are only 3,500 whereas HL2's are 7,000 and the valve animators have left far too much upto the kinetics of the animation program they used.

you want to see how bad the graphics really are in HL2 you just have to look at these stupid screenshots you've put in the forum.
And i want you to show me a screenshot of Volumetric Depth Shadows, because HL2 DOES NOT have them.
The Levels might appear to have them, but they're still using Lightmaps and are precalculated...

Sorry but to me the graphics and animation within HL2 are about as impressive as someone riding thier bike with no hands.
Yeah you can claim that "what other FPS has... blah blah" but that doesn't constitute that this is new to games. I don't see anything new or particularly impressive in HL2.
And the more people are trying to convince me with the screenshots the more faults i end up finding with the graphics that just the public is capable of seeing.

The graphics blendings are no way in hell 32Bit, i don't see the normalisation in the shots, Barney for gods sake looks like they've taken a photograph of one of the members of Valve and just pasted it onto a Swat guys' face; which sorry is one of the BIGGEST graphics no-no's in the world.
There are no Volumetric Depth Shadows, they don't react with the light ... the best indication of that is they INTERSECT and overlap in areas where there is no sun TO give them shadow.
Hell for gods sake even Broken Sword3 has a better shadow engine.

As for the Materials being blend, look at the buildings and look at the pavement in the City17 shot! ... are you honestly trying to tell me that they're not blend and almost textureless in places?
Hell at times they might as well just put a plain sodding colour on surfaces because it'd make no bloody difference.

Quote: "Err... They did. Soldiers were always ducking behind boxes and throwing over grenades."

They moved behind a box, they couldn't PHYSICALLY duck your shots. Nor would they duck down below a sandbag box and come up, no they'd run to a place which had a clear LOS and shoot you.

Quote: "They won it for thier CG, not thier Game animations"

check the awards, they're online ... Square won best animators for Cg and InGame models. They were only just beaten by Blizzard from also getting the best Cg graphics.

Quote: "That's wrong. They can touch and knock each other over."

LOOK AT THEM TOUCHING EACH OTHER! They don't actually touch. Infact there is a very very visible line between where they're suppose to be touching and where they are reacting with each other.
THAT kills the realism... and i don't care if you think that is still amazing, there is no point in putting in a feature to add realism then totally kill it with something else.

And don't try pin this on that i'm trying to make others not like this game... quite frankly i don'ty give a damn if you do or don't.
I just agreed with Nick that this game to ME is very unimpressive.

Oh and what moron claimed that XIII is Japanese developed?!
Because its a french game, about a french comic book. The graphics are because of it being a comic book adaption. Infact there are alot of cutscenes layn out kind like a motion comicbook.

As for the FPS game, the story is great and keeps you sucked in and as for FPS features ... You can use grappling hooks anywhere, anytime. You can take hostages, use them as body armour. You can electrocute guards and after a few times they'll collapse and die.
You can completely use anything laying around as a weapon or break into new areas of the game through walls.
You can kill people who enter lifts by shooting out the lines.
There are so many eliments from Theif in there, yet with far better gameplay... And the ability to actually negotiate with people in the game, try to call trueses between you and those who are trying to kill you. Not to mention the Ai is excellent, because you rush into a room guns blazing and the people will throw over a table and use it as a make do sheild. When they run out of ammo (oh yeah these guys ACTUALLY run out of ammo) they'll start using the room against you.

XIII just adds alot of depth and story to the FPS titles.
You'll have to complete it to actually get the full impact of the game, its story and features... because each new mission gives you new features and abilities.
My favourite so far has to be leg trap in the jungle hehee

*sigh* If only graphics and animation had anything to do with the actual quality of a game. It's a shame to spend all that time working on volumetric shadows, facial expressions, pixel shaders and "unsurpassed" animations - only to be outsold by the next Sims / Railroad Tycoon incarnation. Or "Driving Test Success Practical"

Valve's PR time had better be careful about the hype. They are dangerously close to Unreal II / Enter the Matrix territory where they hyped it through the roof and got everyone's expectations up only to deliver a game that was just passable but nothing remotely special. Right now Valve is promising the world but I'm wondering how much they will be able to deliver. I'm making a prediction right now: the "brilliant physics engine" is only going to come into meaningful play during scripted events and be nothing but eye candy during the rest of the game.

Quote: "and i'd love to see these so called Videos of the ingame of FFXI because Square-Enix haven't released any"

Final Fantasy XI was previewed on Electric Playground yesterday with an extensive amount of in-game footage shown. The graphics looked pretty good but I wasn't blown away - same plastic characters the FF series has always had. The cinematics look brilliant but then they always do. I don't really care about the graphics, what concerns me is that I didn't see anything remotely innovative about the gameplay. Final Fantasy's cliched, wooden characters, ridiculous plots and bland gameplay became old news with FFX. Hopefully Square can try something new for once.

It's the same with Doom III: brilliant graphics but I haven't seen or heard anything that makes me think it's more than a graphics card tech demo, it doesn't evolve the FPS genre in any meaningful way. Oooh, shadows! How suspensful!

lol quite well put... only thing is there is only one Cg animation in the whole of the FFXI game ^_^

now what conserns me here is the mention of FFX,
don't get me wrong no doubt your proving that your not a grand fan or of the series. However FFX really was one of the worst in the series, as the game plot, game play and everything about it seemed like they just wanted a Playstation2 version of Final Fantasy but didn't want to think about it.
What made Final Fantays VI(III) / VII & IX so bloody good was thier plots... The whole Gaia Theory, which has an indepth story that oki might seem ridiculous to someone outside of the series; but you get inside that game, it begins to make more sense. I mean think about it, they've been using Magic in everyday life and having to put up with monsters trying to kill them which also can use magic since the dawn of time. And each of the Final Fantasies really are more of a period within the History of Gaia, so you see through the dark ages to the industrial revolutions even modern day life and beyond.
You can't expect thier lives to be close to our own living in such a world where someone can literally summon a god to destroy a city.

Without a doubt VII had the best story of all, whereas IX had the best gameplay and graphics (for the Playstation).
And really what was and had always been so fantastic about the Final Fantasy Series has been thier gameplay adaptions.

NON of the games play the same. They might have similar UI's and they might appear on the surface to play similar, however they all play completely differently.

This motions on with FFXI, because the gameplay for the first time is RealTime Combat. Although before combat was semi-realtime, it still had strong turn based elements.
There is no real plot in XI, there is a back story but no plot ... and alot more thought has gone into the creation of the world and the interaction of everything and everyone.

What you see as a plastic character, to me is really more of a realistic extension of the Animé style of graphics. And this is the style of the series, you can't expect them to change from animé realism to completely realistic overnight.
However with each title this is starting to show less and less animé and more and more realism.

As far as FFXI is conserned it's gameplay in the FF universe is revolutionary ... and infact to a point it actually shows what an MMORPG nowadays should be like, as it give so much freedom and control and also add alot of depth to your characters.
Character interaction, Language Translator (English<->Japanese), Player Controls & Abilities.
The updates within FFXI from previous MMORPGs are not new things however they are good innovations on the old.

You say perhaps Square should do something new, but quite frankly they are the best at creating the eastern RPGs ... why should they do something else.
That's like telling ID that Doom3 is just a carbon copy of Quake3 with better graphics so maybe they should now work on Tomb Raider instead.

Doom3 hasn't had much hype for a reason. Id aren't idiots.
They're game doesn't include all the fancy gizmos and touches just to make it seem superior. What they have this time is one HELL of a plot and a world in which it is almost unimaginably interactive.

Like HL2, it is set in a single area ... Phobos Labs. The UCA are sent in to investigate an SoS report from the labs, and from the start of the game it is made to feel like the film Aliens.
You know what the game is about, you know something has happened, but the aim of the game is to scare the living s**t out of you.
Maybe it doesn't have realistic physics, but what it does have is a fully interactable base.

You flick a switch at one end of the complex, or start up the reactor from the Command Room and on the other side of the level the reactor will start. Everything in the Phobos Labs goes somewhere and does something.
You blow apart a wall just to get into a room, you might accidentially sever life support for that area and/or the power for the gravplates.

Unlike Valve, rather than working on frivolous features id software has been working on bringing an entire working base with damn intelligent enemies.
The best have to be the Alien Hounds, they look like the Xeno Aliens, they have similar features to the Xeno Aliens and most scarey of all ... they will HUNT you like the Xeno Aliens.

They're not stupid either, they feel they're loosing the fight they'll run off and wait until they're healed enough to attack again - or worse.
id have never before gone into depth with a story and relied entirely on giving you impossible numbers of people to kill just to keep the action up. This not only blows away thier previous titles storywise, but hopefully will change the story narative in FPS from just something there to keep you going to something that makes you truely think about what your doing.
It's one thing to have to hold your fire cause of killing a civvie, its another having to think about what weapon to use so you don't ignite the nitro-oxide gas leaking into a room.

Good points. I do like the Final Fantasy series but was put off by FFX. I said in a previous post that FFXI is probably the only online game I would be willing to pay a subscription for I don't care much about graphics as long as there is a good game in there.

yeah, FFX really was the worst in the series. If you get a chance grab a copy of FFX-2 they've changed the battle system back and it's much better as a whole. Has a better story to.

personally i don't tend to judge graphics based on single points, i judge them as a whole and how they make a game feel. Although i'm not opposed to playing a game with bad graphics if it has excellent gameplay. The game as a whole needs to generally feel good to play, so the entire blend of graphics, gameplay and speed.

It's why i hate the DBZ games so much, because they look good and they have everything ... and the gameplay is nice and simple. But they just lack that insane speed requried from a fighting game.
Infact no fighting game since Super Street Fighter 2 has ever particularly impressed me. They can add all the motion capture and features they like, but without the truely insane speed and the control of the nintendo d-pad; in my eye's they're a waste of time.
When one area of the game is particularly bad, somehow it seems alot easier to sit there and pick out all the faults of the other areas because your focus is more on them than the game.

Out of curiousity, have you ever heard of Soul Calibur 2? I'd give it a try if I were you. Its pretty good and you can use the d-pad for movement in the gamecube version. You might like it.

yeah i have it... it's pretty good and i like the weaponry.
still though doesn't match the frantic nature of SSF2 ^_^

i think its the whole package, of speed, look and easy to pull of special. Although i like the Combo's in Tekken 1-3 and SC 1-2 i dunno they just seem to be missing something

Can someone please post some screenshots of FFXI that show its graphics off well. All I can find are shots like this:

The shadows here look like they are just fading black circles, not the fancy ones that Raven described.

From what Raven has described of Doom 3 it sounds just like the storyline for HL2. At the beginning you don't know what has happened between the end of HL and now. You just have to react to what is happening as it comes, deciding if someone is a friend or foe, for example. You learn about what is going on later (but not through cut scenes).

Doom 3 and HL2 seem pretty similiar. HL was, after all, created by a team who absolutely loved Doom + Quake.

So in a competition between them I suppose it is those little extras that really tip the balance.

From what I've seen, City 17 seems just as interactive as Phobos Labs. My personal favourite bit is the player shooting out some windows so that Ant Lions can jump in through them.

HL2's main advantage, the makers say, is its character development, which no other game really does. I think you are on your own in Doom 3 so it can't have any/many NPCs.

The stories are nothing alike...
in HL2 your part of the Governments rebellion agains the Xen invasion force who've perfected thier assimilation abilities and are being controlled by someone higher up in the government away from the g-man's branch.
Infact the whole HL2 plot has a very X-Files feel to it.

Where as Doom3 is about discovering the initial Phobo incident, and really is very very close to Aliens.

How the hell can you possible think they're even close!?

City17 is interactable, however it is not COMPLETE... you don't have totally destoryable sceneary like the Phobos Lab. You don't have powerlines that affect other areas of the game, infact if you shoot down one of the flying bugs and they hit them nothing more than some nice pyrotechnics happen.
If you ground one into the ocean, do you get a wave comming back to the beach or affecting the ships out there? No you don't.

The difference in integration and feeling like your in a game world, rather than being able to manipulate it a little.

and yeah HL2 has the story development, but to be honest they don't actually increase the actual story of the characters... it is a very limited storywise game. You can interact in the same way you could in the original.
Doom3 however you can interact like an RPG with characters, command you fellow UAC soliders ... get the scientists to help you out or piss them off to the point where they try and kill you in an accident.
Shot a scientist in the leg just to injure him and you loose respect and the command over the UAC Soliders for harming those your there to protect.

You loose a fight in one area of the base and you'll have to think of a new way to get past them. Learning the bases infrastructure is key to victory.

Sure the enemies are just to be senselessly slaughtered, but storywise HL2 doesn't even come close to Doom3.

information on the game is hardly underwraps now

a more important question might be, how the hell do i know what Doom3 is like ... but then really its the exact same reason i know exactly what HL2 is like.

No, you were still displayed as Chris Knott at the "Who's online" thing. For a second I almost thought you really were Raven.

Anyway...

So, becasically I've read a big thread the comaring and contrasting of HL2 and FFIX(btw, anyone have FFX-2 yet?)

Here's what I've gotten

HL2

Basically they're overusing a lot of unneccessary features. BUT
As long as there is a feature to tone down grahics settings, I don't see it a problem. By the time it releases,(2-4 months?) there shouldn't be as much a problem with speed.(At least for me.)

I also really have to comment on the lighting from this screen.
It's really nice, and gives the scene a memorable feel.

I really don't know much about FFXI, so I rather not comment on it.
I can't wait till Doom3 and HL2 come out, then we'll be able to decided what's good, bad, and ugly.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

@Raven

You know, Joseph Goebles, the Nazi Propaganda Minister once said:

"If you tell a lie, tell a big one, and people will believe you."

Glad to see that some people in this world still follow his doctrines

Even if you don't buy HL2, I imagine that several million others will, and they will probably be delighted by it.

I don't like FPS games generally (Haven't played much FPS's since Doom I) but HL2 facial animations do look very impressive.

I'm just about to take Raven's points seriously... then I see his avatar.

BTW, before you write a two page post on this, I'm joking.

@ Raven

1)Have you actully played Doom III and Half-life 2 full release versions...

You make it sound as if you have already played and beaten BOTH games yourself

2) I think what chris knotts was trying to compare was the origonal halflife to DOOM III...half-life sounds almost what you described doom 3 to be

Quote: "... get the scientists to help you out or piss them off to the point where they try and kill you in an accident."

yep that sounds like halflife

3) can you show us a snapshot of FFXI that looks really good (and can compete with halflfife2)?

yeah i've played and completed both of them, and even without all the features fully implimented ... there is still enough to know what is actually capable of what.

HL2 is good, but it isn't impressive and that is the bottom line of the post here isn't it.
Nick mentioned he saw the video and wasn't impressed, and i've commented on that i'm not impressed with it either ... and i've commented on why i'm not impressed with it.

Hell i'm a huge fan of Half-Life and FPS in general, so really if HL2 was everything that everyone seems to beleive it will be... then when i got my hands on it and even the now complete Benchmark 'Before the Cause' Demo, i would be impressed and be there to sing its praises.
But i'm not even close to impressed, they've gone for eye candy over subtance and the eye candy isn't impressive because everything they have used is lock-stock default versions that have been used in 101 games already.

The story is weak as hell, and the gameplay is LITERALLY no different to the original. You might thing the updates make it an awesome game, but they're thrill values, nothing more really.
It's almost like they've gone around and said "well take every awesome new aspect around and use it... our game can't fail"

and anyone who say "oh well Raven wouldn't talk like this if he knows someone on the team.", why the hell not?
those who know me from off the forum will know, if i think something is s**t i'll tell you it is. I don't BS to my mates, and i'm not going to pretend to like something when i don't.
and who the hell is to say that actually it is actually my mates who agree with me about the game.

It's good, but it ain't GOTY like people want to believe and it ain't impressive to me.
Sure it'll sell millions and alot of people love the way it looks, but the graphics don't impress me, the game doesn't impress me ... and it is MY opinion not yours.
you don't have to agree with it, you don't have to like it. But don't tell me that my opinion is wrong, because it is my opinion if you think the animation is the best then fine you think its the best ... but to ME it isn't even close.

second, the games Ai isn't anything like HLs - because the people in Doom3 have very distinct personalities, and you have to use certian people for certain tasks.
good example is I used Corporal Augie to check the reactor because quite frankly he's an idiot who'll do anything, not matter if he does die from radiation poisoning or .. something else

and i wish i could show you a screenshot of FFXI, but right now i'm running a P2-300mhz cause my comps are still down. Add to this i'm not renewing my account until my workload cuts back from the design stages at work. So after christmas i should be online again with it and able to take screenshots, but right now my account is down.
Mainly cause my account would cost $25/month to continue with cause i have both update packs and 3 characters all with Terramaster abilities.

There is no way you have played HL2. It isn't finished so you can't know the storyline.

How long did it take you to complete?
What happens right at the end of it?

He said he completed it! Which is hard to believe. It takes ages to complete these things, and it's not even released yet. If he got the ripped version, it would still take ages to complete.

The ripped version doesn't have any actual levels.

Raven, you've said some pretty stupid stuff before but claiming that you have played and completed HL2 and Doom 3 is a complete lie.

Come on, Raven - What happens right at the end of HL2??

Don't worry, Raven doesn't know.

Look, Raven, you can't just claim ridiculous things without any proof and expect us to believe you. Tell us some stuff that you only know from playing the full game.

there are 8 episodes, each take a different ammount of time to complete but your looking at the better part of 50hrs gameplay.

all i'm going to say about the end is expect a sequal within a year of release (and yes it is currently in development).
as for Doom3, the game is done really... right now is bug fixxing for the March 04 release.

like what? ... i don't see anything i can say which wouldn't spoilt the plot or any surprised you'll get from the game.

i could name you the episodes, but then how exactly could you check if i was right if there is no information on them?
and if i do describe parts that are in the videos or continuations of the areas, then you'll say "well he's only seen the video" or "well he's just using his imagination"

quite frankly unless you happen to have a copy, there isn't a way you can cooberate this is there
so i don't see how i can prove it without screenshots or a movie, and that would break the NDA ... which is ALL i'll want on my bloody head right now isn't it.

A friend on mine on the IRC mailed Valve with your full name and asked if you were on their (closed) beta testing team. They responded with a resounding no. Something tells me I'll get the exact same response if I mailed id.

There are several leaked versions of Doom 3 beta's which aren't hard to find if you go to illegal means, mind you, that's the only way you can obtain them.

wow a whole friend emailed valve and everything ... i'm so impressed.
problems with your little plan though.

now lets see, didn't mention i was beta testing only that i've signed nda
also i'd read through press releases. valve nor vivendi are going to freely admit something that proves them liars.

and unless i end up with an email in my inbox telling me to shut my mouth, my bet is that your mate has no clout with valve. and really they're going to give him the run around ^_^

i mean not to be funny, but they don't freely give information out to anyone - they give out information they want to.
