Some might have spotted me using one or two of these the other day...



I am in the process of finalising the WP 8.1 and Windows 8.1 apps and they should be available soon, the mobile app is just a convenience by not having to re-download images from the site again and again... useful for those on low data contracts, the desktop/tablet version is a little more nifty with grouping and one click copy to clipboard! as well as snapping! very convenient!

I have been frustrated at the lack of choice of emoticons and always thought to create my own, and so... I did! also when using the icons on mobile, or the image button, is it often frustrating to use...

The base idea is to make it easy to find, copy the link and paste into the forums here... [or anywhere!]

But these can be used for much more than that, initially I was going to limit these to the apps, but decided I might as well stick them on a website for the entire world to use!

I hope you like them and use them, more information on how you can use them on the site, but you can also embed these into Word Documents and Emails etc., keeping in mind that embedded versions will not update if any changes are made to the designs in future.

The app for Windows 8.1 does that, I could try some JQuery or something, will look into it, but I try to avoid intrusive measures...

I was discussing this in the beta forum thread with The Next and he suggested I start an icon thread where people upload icons to the forum (so they are persistent). I presume the later goal was to incorporate them into the existing ones with an ic code. I hadn't yet because there are creases that need ironing:
1. Anything above 16x16 will stuff up text alignment. It's not width so much as height.
2. Formats: PNG and GIF are the only formats with transparency that all browsers (excluding text-based and homebrew and the like) render.
3. Creating raster icons seems redundant because the new site will include vector graphics (SVG) which is browser-rendered and makes them scalable with text.
So yeah, I was toying with how to go about it. I think the best would be to encourage people to design the SVG and export to PNG. Anyways, I'm still contemplating this. Then the other thing is organisation. I'll need moderator assistance or permissions to read/write/delete posts in that thread because I would want to keep it free of all comments (ie stop it becoming the second posting competition like a certain RPG thread). Anyway, that's my cards on the table. The images have to be stored on a TGC server because that way there's more guarantee of consistency.

That said, MrV, perhaps make 16p copies of what you have tp make them forum-friendly. I'll try and find you a non-JavaScript copy-to-clipboard method if you like, otherwise you can just tell visitors to turn JavaScript on to use the site.

Back on topic, I think we need to hold off a little on icons with this site until we see where it's going. Just my opinion.

Totally off-topic: MrV, if you drew those from scratch, I think you should consider getting into icon design. The theme/shape is a little repetitive but you have the right raw talent. Really
And your site is a great idea but it does have a few pitfalls like size, image URL (you going to keep the site running ten years from now? Twenty? Thirty? We dunno where the net will be then), bandwidth (could you handle heavy traffic if, say, the site got popular in the long run and forums and image boards were using it) and attacks (if your site got widespread use, your server would be under attack because gaining access would let an attacker image spam lots of places at once). But the negatives aside, I still like the idea.

I used 120x120 as it is an optimal in my view minimum and maximum [Also the optimum for my hashtag and copyright - which I am still trying to figure out... thinking to just stick the hashtag and leave the copyright sign out of it...], however I am yet to build any followers on Facebook [Currently 16 likes in 3 hours mostly friends but some followers of others joined in already] after which they may dictate any future amendments or features/designs... it is a slow process, they are free, and as such no ads either as is my policy on apps, games, websites... [Unless it is an in-house product being cross advertised]

The product is for all to use, so choosing to use it here or elsewhere is optional, so regardless of what happens here on the forum, ForumIcon will grow either way

I think you may already be familiar with a site/service I started a couple of years ago TGC Forum Repository, it is still there and always will be...

It costs me next to nothing per month... [2 large meals at a fast food outlet] to keep afloat, add to that the domain is my companies domain since 2011 as is the hosting [I have had hosting with them since 2007 actually] I have absolutely no plans to shut it down... and Should ForumIcon grow beyond server capacity I will look at advertising to keep dedicated hosting afloat [Though I aim to keep the ads optional as a last resort]... it as you can see has its own domain name, which means I can both point or host it anywhere...

I am using a UK based hosting provider who know what they are doing and are owned by a big name in the hosting market here in Europe, I trust their servers to be safe and sound, I am on shared hosting at present so firewalls are their responsibility for the time being until I go dedicated which I have not had the need to do until now...

I had a look at JavaScript Copy to Clipboard but it is rather restrictive in its usage... and It mainly only works in IE...

And that Clipboard API, cannot make any sense out of it... makes me feel like this...

SVG has thanks to HTML5 gained traction albeit in the latest OS versions, but remember this will limit older browser users, though you can place a PNG fall-back... similar to Video fall-back... I think...

I feel so that I cannot simply make a button and set a source and add my JScript to the action... irritating... and it only works with <TextArea> tags... Which have to be visible

Well, it seems you're more or less sorted with this project. Perhaps a kickstarter when you have enough icons. With the proceeds, you could hire people to rapidly grow your asset collection.

About your size issue (you said 60 or 120 in the link), how about the 120p icon with multiple sizes next to it, say 120p, 60p 32p 16p and whatever.

I had an idea about icon compatibility on this site. Add an [ico]URL[/ico] tag that will have the site auto-scale images. This is probably the best as then it negates the mess I had imagined earlier. This functionality exists already. Will post it in your favourite thread I'm glad I got this out, amazing how kust speaking about a problem you were trying to solve can conjure up the answer.

Final note: When the time comes, perhaps you'd like to handle the icon thread? It doesn't really matter to me, so long as everything is handled orderly and we don't have choas as I've developed kinda a soft-spot for this place and really want to see it shine.

I used some pre-existing designs and modified them away from their originals slightly, although for a short while they will be the basis of my icons, I will eventually shift away into a custom style, I just wanted to get some pilot icons going to get the project off the ground, I am more or less done with basic layout for the app and website, the website reflects the apps, I am using a consistent colour design so users feel at home however they access the links

Regarding the Kickstarter idea... I think I could agree to doing something like that... bring in some local art students and pay them to keep up the content, while they gain them some industry experience somewhat, Could be interesting to see if they had any input for ideas of how to further the reach of this type of project too...

I have completed the Mobile app, just waiting for the desktop app to complete just 10 more sets of additions for now remain and then I can brush up a final review and submit it in the morning [Will be awake all night as I have a client call at 11am...]

Getting this close to submission to two simultaneous platform releases is exciting! [Well 3+ hehe]

I think you can make the copy to clipboard thing using flash. There was a site i used to use that had those options next to each picture in your album. I think it was photo bucket. Also, i think animated emoticons would be so awesome!!!

I agree with you about icon height, but why worry about the url? Will this forum even be around in 30 years? I don't think and if it is then we're all sad people, lol ^_^
What i mean is you cannot preserve everything and nothing will last. It's fine linking images from other sites. You do it with wordpress for your signatures and posters and creepy pictures of you (and "i see what you did there" too).

What I meant was the reaizing functionality and not the [ico] tags. Pffft, should have been implicitly obvious but you are both let off the hook as it is my un-birthday today and I'm turning un-100 -- which is a biggy! Image-resizing can be done even in pretty basic HTML documents and TGC implement it for avatars. And Wasp, I can see your text.

I made the whole thing in two days, I went with the theme I did as it felt comical and fitting, the salmon colour was last minute to allow some division and clarity for the icons, not a common colour in images and graphics, grey would have blended into the images making their edges difficult to identify...

The Apps and Website blend into each other creating a seamless look and feel So I might update the colour in future given some feedback be applied first...

No, No, No, No, No, ....... No, No, No, No, just No... Flash restricts the user base, I found a JavaScript based solution but even that is intrusive to a degree... I tried it as well and it was very restrictive in its application as well... I think I will stick with Text copying for the time being... need more time to draw more images hehe...

Screenshot, Which browser are you using? Opera? FireFox? Chrome? Safari?

My client today spent the day battling me at Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition [On my surface Pro 2 with two pads, I have four...] and was completely satisfied with the service too, happy days, nothing beats work and play haha but it means I have had to delay work on the apps by a further day 'sigh' that and my garden work

A browser for mobiles with server-side compression. It's better than Opera Mini (which leaks memory but nobody listened to me) in terms of stability. Some of your icons do have transparent backgrounds though, so maybe it is the renderer on the server. Will check it out on my PC at some point and try to track down the cause.

Ah, my phone does that automatically and I never get glitches...

I hope you find a fix for it

I feel so bad today an event I was thinking to go to but cancelled because I spent over £60 / $100 on research material last week [games... GoG I hate you right now lol] But now a client just called me from London and wants me to come train them and redesign their new site and logo... I then go back and check for ticket availability for the event so I can hit two birds with one stone and bam... tickets are out now I am on a waiting list...

Oh well more garden work and then back to FI work and studies...

I think the "#FORUMICON" puts me off using a little, but perhaps it is necessary to promote what you are doing?

If it has to be there then its current positioning is unfortunate since it sits in line with the users text, maybe it should be vertical as to not interfere with the text?

Yes, until I adapt a styling and further the details, I will eventually remove the hashtag after a period of time or such...

So it becomes less irritant to people who see it over a prolonged period of time, but new icons will have them in place for the new viewers to find the information of where to find them in future...

As it has just launched, things will change over time, until a design style is met and set in stone and a procedure in place which feeds off the design style...

I should eventually now have the feel for actually taking the time to create an image on impulse as now I have a way to reuse it and share it as well previously I would not bother, but the thought remained...

Also, I don't see any white. You're browser is definitely not working. On opera mini (which i never had a problem with) you can set the image quality. Maybe your browser has this option too and it compresses badly because it's on low quality or something.

@MrValentine: I didn't understand most of it but it seems that flash did try to improve to keep up to date. Well if it falls out of fashion then i suppose you would be wasting your time maybe. But it will still be awhile before that happens.

I would say that whilst Flash is great, I've always for it hasn't been very well optimized, in some cases feeling bloated and even crashing my browser on PC, particularly websites laden with it. Probably not much support is found in mobile devices, heck stuff like Smart TV's will only have a certain amount of basic support, but have a limited cache - Smart TV's that now are using multiple cores and decent processing speeds like mobile devices and PC's.

But these types of devices are a lot more common and there's so much more technology out there that's efficient.

Heck, not even services like LoveFilm or Netflix use it, they use Silverlight because of DRM. Heck, I find Silverlight is more stable for me, I use Pluralsight training and have the video defaults set to Silverlight and I never find I have an issue buffering - though not been too bothered checking if I change it on YouTube, I just refresh. Less convenient when you're following a tutorial like on Pluralsight.

But of course Silverlight isn't available on devices. However, for flashy websites, you've got CSS3, HTML5, WebGL, AJAX and of course, the good old fashioned JavaScript, or JQuery, which is a useful library for JavaScript. I look at Web Design books, HTML5 seems to be the big pleaser. But these are all compatible with mobile versions of sites.

I would say Flash is becoming more and more phased out - well, for development - though I doubt it'll be completely phased out - it still has its uses for web and is actually a create 2D animation tool anyway. Great for making cartoons, even ones we see on TV.

Interesting that Unity3D was at one point working on Flash support, but dropped it after beta and the next version instead has invested in HTML5 with WebGL. Possibly a sign of changes in technology. For in browser games, it looks like WebGL might be the way to go. Also, the classic RuneScape is now jumping from Java to HTML5. TGC looked like they were going the same way with AppGameKit and Freedom Engine, but I think they didn't want to become too much of a jack of all trades and draw focus away from other improvements, but at least we saw AppGameKit working with HTML5 and WebGL - even with an editor and compiler offering a completely Cloud-based solution.

Didn't I once hear that 80% of all computer malware enter the host computer through an Adobe product, presumably Flash??

I mean it wouldn't surprise me.

I would say, most often it was flash yes... and equally Java [Not JavaScript]

Apologies for triple post but this is an important update

I took in the feedback above and have thus reflected upon it...

I have added 15/30/60/120 scales...



For the lower 15 and 30 scales you need to manually change the numbers in the image links, I felt adding four links or buttons was a little bit excessive, and quite the laborious task for myself as I am currently manually entering everything into the app and website...

I actually have the ability to use a database with the website to generate the overall layout but it is often hit or miss, but I intend to look into it in the coming week or next few days as soon as I complete and submit the apps to the stores...

You may want to remove the bottom line text in the 15 and 30 scales; it's just a gray line at those sizes.

Edit: New sig...


Flash is falling out of... Flashion.

I had a nokia e72 for a long time, now i have the e5 (but i keep calling it an e75 by mistake). It's an old phone but it never gives problems. I would love a windows mobile nokia or an iphone but that's too expansive for me. Maybe this xmas.

UPDATE!!!

ForumIcon Windows Phone 8.1 app released today!

If you are a registered developer and have a preview of WP8.1 then you can download it for free now!

When WP8.1 is released to the general public then it will be available to all, for free!

Just waiting on the Windows Store for the Windows 8.1 release to come through, should be later today or within 5 days...

The icons aren't bad at all, except the text which has already been mentioned, but the UI and colour schemes on the website and in-app need a major overhaul to prevent people getting sore eyes. I think your app store description also needs work.

Thanks guys, I just picked something that looked good to begin with so that I could get it out there, so now I have the chance to tweak the colour schemes easier now that all I need to do is apply a simple Replace All procedure...

Can you elaborate on the font?

Still got to remove the hashtag from the smaller variants, will get on it over the coming days...

Store Description, any pointers where I could improve, a bit shattered at the moment and going for a tooth filling later today I agree I need to get it more to the design...

Regarding colour, I could make some changes to the website over the coming days and maybe have you feedback on that? have had a request for a Sky Blue for the background so far... once the website has been approved by some of you I can then update the apps to reflect the change, [Darn along with many Icons that will need redoing, honestly they take up 30% of the workload...]

Thank you for such a positive response thus far! truly amazing bunch
