dbpro.

Hello out there. Ive been playing around with different modeling programs and file formats for a while now and have never been able as of yet to create a gorgeous terrain. I always seem to end up with a high texture quality and poor blending or great blending and poor texture quality. so i am curious what everyone uses out there for making detailed terrains. attached picture of what im talking about terrain has decent not great blending however u cannot see the fine detail of the grass textures.

I can suggest to look at evolved's advanced terrain, it's amazing!
Look at this thread: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=211683&b=1
You can always make your own terrain editor. It has been done before.

I have used lots of programs to test, some of them brilliant like bryce 3d, but this kind of programs are more like for render or TV . As luskos said, we could try to make our terrain editor. Take a look here:

Cheers.

But if you want a really high quality professional terrain , then you should use terrain splatting. There is a shader that could create 4 layers from an rgba texture + lightmap. You should search the forum with "texture splatting" keywords.

EDIT :
Here's the shader (help file included)

hmm that texture splatting looks goods trying to stay away from big complicated commercial products that aren't designed specifically for terrain creation evolves advanced terrain looks killer. couldn't get evolves advanced terrain to compile.
