First of all, here is the link: http://www.dbg.excaver.com if it doesn't work please try this one: http://www.excaver.com/dbg/

Introduction

Well, me and xxxpetratxxx had this put together a short while ago...but due to technical difficulties with the server, we couldn't show it yet.

> Basically Dark Basic Generation is a site dedicated to everything DBP. Mainly games & applications, but also news, articles and tutorials. DBG is a great place for a DBP showcase. Games get reviewed, scored, and placed on the site similar to such magazines as Pc gamer or EGM. Depending on the game's version or progress they are placed in either "Reviews" or "Previews" where they are uploaded occasioanly. A simple rating system was developed by PetRat to help us determine the quality of the games. It is as follows:

Gameplay: Graphics: Audio: Lifeplay: Overall Quality:

So you understand how it works.

Future plans & updates

Of course this site will be daily if not at least weekly updated with more games and other content. We will add the "Developer's List & Avalabilty" and Red_Eye's FAQ page. We will also upload open-source games (already got 2) and various tutorials we can find, but it will mainly be about the GAMES.

We are also hoping to perhaps feature news on events, latest upgades/patches, as well as interviews. We also have a few other ideas for the site that we will try later on...

Mildly Interested?

First of all, if you think you might want to contribute then PLEASE don't hesitate to say. We need everyone we can get. Writers especially but also anyone who has either a tutorial, article or game to contribute. Even if you don't have anything to contribute, you may just drop by an email with a link to a game you might think is cool and think we should feature and just say anything alse like suggestions, improvements, or comments.

And MOST importantly we need YOUR feedback right now, PLEASE tell us what you thing, what we can improve, what we should add, what we should change or allmost anything else.

Contact Info
megaton (site admin): megaton@dbg.excaver.com/roman66@mail.com
PetRat: (Host & eveything else: benjamin@excaver.com

We are really serious about this and hope it can grow (not much on it at the moment). But second most important, have fun & enjoy!

Merry Christmas as well!,

-The DBG team.

Excellent!

Edit: Just noticed a slight error - Under RobK's BLUE Plugin, you say "Rob's new IDE for DarkBASIC processional", just not to confuse anyone, but the IDE and plugin are two seperate things. Might be worth documenting the IDE as well, mind you.

My email won't let me send it.
Please can you download it yourself from my site.
It has really bad bandwidth (that's why I would like you to host it) so good luck with getting it to download properly.

Please give it a review if you can be bothered.

My site is on my sig image.

hmmm. Well thats not setup and the moment because we just want to see your reaction and if you would be interested in this sort of thing, but when you register you basically get your game featured...It will be hosted for you on our servers if you wish (15 mb size limit) ill get a review, will be scored, along with a link to the download and a link to your site. (as well as plenty of screenshots of it ) If you have a tutorial to submit then we would also work something out...email us if you have anymore questions or just post here!

Ok.
I renamed it to .jpg and uploaded it to a free picture upload space.
Right click and "Save Target As..." then save it as all files but make the name Rampage.zip. Should work.

I'd be very interested to know about your hosting, and of course reviews.

Whilst I've got 80Mb of webspace, I don't really want additional bandwidth charges so hosting at yourend will stop this, and allow me more stuff on my site (like the wedding photo's my wife has just forced me to upload - all 2Mb of them!!!!!!!)

But a dedicated DBPro Project Review does sound really good. And somebody with a good, sensible and adult approach like you seem to be doing, is again, very beneficial.

@Chris Knott
Um I dont have the file and I dont have the time to download a 3MB file and apparently changing the extension doesnt work(or megaton is acting stupid)so....use winRAR to split it into seperate files, and I'll sew em together this end. Send these files to benjamin@excaver.com

(im not sure if this was asked already, I just quickly skimmed)

Will you provide statistics for our games? For instance, how many user downloads there where?

Also, is it possible that you direct users to a website instead of having them download from yours...?

well, yes, I've mentioned that in my preivous post I think, we will also rate comleted games and demos with petrat's system ALONG with a LINK to your website and the download if it's hosted on your sever. Hope that clears something up...

a very good question indeed...petrat will soon be along with the answer...(he wanted to answer it) personally I am with it, it would give the author some info on how their game is doing...

p.s petrat told me not to post yet but I left some answering for you to do so don't worry

Very Nice Site, I like it. Colors are easy on the eyes, and the Alien logo is great. Also like the way that you've only included the best of the best (though a few of the best of the best are aparently missing, like Transfusion, Sunday Drivers, etc).

Cheers,
Preston

Actually, everyone is to be included. We are only 2 people. We cannot write a review for every DBP game ever made. We only included some personal favorites to get the site of the ground and find out people's opinions. As it will grow, more people will hopfully write and more programs will be reviewed. Along with more features to the site.

Ok, I'm not too sure about web stats at the moment. I can add counters to the review pages, which inform people how popular the review is, but the only way to do the same for downloads is to have a downloads page, with a counter on that.

I may be able to get some sort of script from someone so I will probably solve this problem.

Oh, the alternative is for me to check the stats of the site manually and update the pages each day with current stats on the downloads.

yeah guys,

here a tip for you...

In your reviews or previews, don't include alot of pictures In the main article; at most 1-2 and they should be small in size. Instead place all the other pics in a easy to access link at the bottow and/or top of the page(i.e. "click here to view screenshots").

Putting too many pics (that are large) in the middle of an anticle is kinda bad and is distracking to the reader...

The inconsistancy in articles is also a bit disconcerting, for instance, under the reviews section all 3 articles are written in completely different styles. One is a long-winded article with some author comments, the next is a very short description with a feature list and the last is an actual review of a game with scores and all. It would nice to see the majority of articles written in a similar style although the exception can be something like a featurette (like the Aspace article) which is longer and more informative.

I understand it's hard if you haven't played/tested the games so I'm just giving my thoughts.

The hosting questions are really quite short, sweet and straight to the point...

1) Exactly how many 'games' will you be able to host?
2) What about measuring download stats?
3) How reliable would your downloads be (i.e., don't want people coming to your site if they can't download - it will reflect on US, not you...)
4) Would this be a free service
5) If "No" to above, how will you acquire revenue - Ads, donations, etc.
6) How about WE (the programmers) incorporate a "Post Hi-Scores" system in our 'games' so YOU have a global hi-score leaderboard per 'game' - Nothings better than trying to beat the competition....
7) What legal issues are you concerned or have?

TIA

Ok I can answer some of those questions, the others I really dont understand

1) Exactly how many 'games' will you be able to host?
Do you mean per person or altogether? Well I am hoping that most people will host the games on thier own servers, as our hosting is an alternative for people that cant host files.

2) What about measuring download stats?
Um, im not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean manually checking the database to see how many people have downloaded the games and update the pages accordingly?

3) How reliable would your downloads be (i.e., don't want people coming to your site if they can't download - it will reflect on US, not you...)
Well the downloads should be quite high speed, and the server hasnt yet gone down(not that it will)

4) Would this be a free service
Yes, however a lot of people that have thier own file space, should use it to save space on our servers.

6) How about WE (the programmers) incorporate a "Post Hi-Scores" system in our 'games' so YOU have a global hi-score leaderboard per 'game' - Nothings better than trying to beat the competition.... right, uh...I dont know what you mean. Do you mean have a page for scores that people have obtained in certain games? If thats what you mean then I think I can work out a little program for that.

7) What legal issues are you concerned or have?
This one I dont get. Like what?

----------

I will give the reviews a check and update them for megaton accordingly. Any other questions are welcome.

Sounds fair to me...!

Quote: "Um, im not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean manually checking the database to see how many people have downloaded the games and update the pages accordingly?"

Yeah, I mean exactly that. If you host one of our products, it would be nice to know how many times 'someone' has downloaded it from your server.

Sounds good...

Again, I think that's a good fair usage policy - providing it's adherred to

Yes, that is at the moment a bit disorganized. You see we can't give a "proper" review to any of the games in "previews" as we had not played them yet (Roswell, nANo, etc) but only seen screenshots of. So we basiclly summarize what the author had said in the forums. At the end of the week exept everything to hopefully be back in place. Thank you.

Quote: "What about measuring download stats?

Yea, I think PetRat will have something up to take care of that.

yes...this is rather not very clear but sound interesting. Could you please provide more details and mabe an example on what you mean?

Quote: "What legal issues are you concerned or have?

As I said, this is something I have been wondering about as well. But I have decited no to worry about that right now since we are just starting and most of us are not "official" or "registered" so we can avoid the legal stuff for now. (Although *someone* the other day did say the we were "ripping off" TGC. But he took it back so it's okay now)

But there are still alot of issues we had not tackled yet. I've already recieved a couple of emails of people asking to join. Thanks, keep them coming!

I also have to discuss a few things with PetRat concerning the site so if anyone has more questions, fire away.

Joining gives you the possibility of becoming a regular writer on reviews and lets you have your games hosted on our server.
