Here's a bit of an out of date pic of my Windows one with one of my Linux machines in a window (via a remote connection through VNC)

http://mainframe39.mikeasoft.com/junk/mydesktop.jpg

My newer Windows desktop uses Aston rather than Explorer for the shell, here's a pic:

(I've just given links since they're rather big)

It's part of one of the Aston themes. You can grab the theme here http://www.deviantart.com/download/1344432/ That actual theme itself won't be of any use to you unless you use Aston, but you can still grab the background pic from it since it's just a normal image.

I have a confession to make. I don't have longhorn (though i will have seen ) - http://www.desktopsidebar.com is where you'll want to be heading.

And the rest is a windows xp themes based in linux. It works well.

I like the leaked Longhorn beta . I've got that sitting around but I'm not about to install it; don't have any empty machines . And from everything I've heard, at this point it's just a bloated, system-hogging and unstable version of XP with some bells and whistles like the new desktop appendages.

From my usage of Aston so far it seems to pretty much have the edge over Explorer in most respects. It hasn't once crashed and it make use of less memory whilst in operation. Plus it's much more customisable with nice plug-in modules (Such as that system resource monitor in the screenshot)

@elleomea: Any idea of how to change the colours so they'll fit the
windows? For example, When I go into Outlook Express, there are
two shades of grey, the XP shade and the win9x shade.

I'd install it and be surprised if I were you. It's VERY stable on my machine, had it running a month. POST to desktop in about 10 seconds, incredibly fast loading, plus there's a new language built in called AML (Application Mark-Up Language). Basically you can open notepad, put in some buttons, say what these buttons do (like open a window, browser, etc), then turn it into a mini application!!

As for a leaked demo - I'd be VERY careful, especially if you're gonna test the internet on it, Microsoft ARE testing their new security features which <ahem> do work

Longhorn's UI has completely changed between the leaked version and the current version; i just ADORE the new UI ^_^
but that's covered by the NDA because it's no longer just the testing version, kinda like Whistler was the test skin for XP during the majority of the beta test.

Though i honestly prefer Whistler, still have it; but you need MS Plus! to be able to use it.

^_^ puffy knows who the girl in my background is... portrait of someone special though, and she is one hell of an artist!! Not had time to reinstall Plus! yet so no DT themes lol, but i'll have my Final Fantasy one back on as soon as i do.

Aero, Plex, Luna, Perkin & Aurora are the current skins... depending on what you've signed depends on what you get to see and what tools are available to see in working order.

Perkin's is a quirky skin that looks alot like Windows 3.1 (cept with a new twist, is quite nice)
Aurora is the official default one, it's not just a new skin for Windows Nx... it's a complete transformation truely shows the extent of the new fully customisable UI. It has a very "matrix" feel to it. :-P

as for the girl, never know could be your sister hehee j|k ... it's a erm friend hehee

Who knows ... but I'm certainly not trying out the net. I would not be at all surprise if Microsoft leaked these betas soley to be able to charge those who they detect using it. For whatever reason, it was definatly MS who leaked it...

Yeah, if truth be known and one were to be pedantic, then I guess the cost of my copy came out of my MSDN Subscription. But do you really suspect MS leaked it to test their own version!!! Nar, they wouldn't do such a thing, that would be very naughty, totally unethical and unfair business practice, even if it were a bloody good way of testing illegal distributions....

Companies leak beta versions of their programs all the time, it's getting weirdly close to being standard behavior . But yes, Micrsoft is far too just and moral to do such a deed

TCA - Yeah works (mostly) fine on XP. The main menu runs too fast, but the game itself is perfectly playable. I even installed it on my Mums machine (that in itself should be taken as an indication of how well it works).. I love it, great game. Got it from ASDA for £4.

All the other icons are the software I use day to day (umm, well, except perhaps the bottom right three icons.. insert legal disclaimer here).
