Demo updated... see page 2 for details

Miss Kitty Fantastico is a cartoony game involving a kitten running around collecting goodies and avoiding monsters… based mostly off jokes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Originally attempted in DBC, I’m rewriting it from scratch in DBP… not even close to being complete, but I’m curious to see how playable it is.

This is only the first 6 levels (plus a pointless bonus level). Lots missing… no menu or options, missing sound effects, wonky collision, and still shaking the bugs out of several game elements like moving platforms and pushable objects. Any feedback on frame rates, playability, etc. would be appreciated!

Wow... That's bloddy fantasitc!!

And you say that it's "not even close to being complete"... Well, i can't wait to see the finished product!!

The Graphics are just stunning ( fitting in perfectly with the cartoony style ). The Gameplay is very, very addictive if not a bit simple, and the music is perfect

I liked the way you can push over the shovels in the last level, and the crumbling tiles, and the way you have the candles, it's all just supurb...

And, to top it off, I got a frame rate of about 35 ( on 1024,768 )all the way through, which is bloddy fantastic!! ( My computer kinda sucks, and I normally dont get anything above 20 for most games made in DBC/P )

I must say, even though it's not complete, I'd have to give this game a rating of 9.5 out of 10

Just on the down side here, I noticed a few little issues,
1. When Jumping using Ctrl, I noticed that if you jump over an open tile, the kitten seems to start to fall, then end up back on the tile on the other side... You may want to have a look a that one.

2. If two of the same type monsters collide, the second will disapear into the first ( completely ) untill the first changes direction, then the second keeps going in the direction the first was goin... if that makes sence.

3.There is an infinate number of lives. Once the lives counter hits 0, there's no game over... maybe that's just for debug purposes though

4.The camera movement over-all is really good, but when moving the kitten down the screen, the camera deosn't show enough of the area below the kitten, and it is pretty hard to see what's ahead. I had to resort to moving, letting the camera catch up, moving some more, letting the camera catch up, moving... etc etc. It's not bad, and Obviously not a bug, but it get's kinda difficult to see ahead.

But, as I said, It's a damned good game! Great work

Jess.

[EDIT]
And I forgot to mention, the transition between themain level and the crypts is seemless. It is really, really effective
Also, the movement was extremely smooth too
[/EDIT]

[EDIT 2]
I just went throuh the game folder, and I noticed that you use scripts for all your levels and enemys and objects, etc etc. Very nice. I can see this game having alot of potential!
[/EDIT]

Miss Kitty Fantastico is like its cool name! Fantastique!

I am impressed. You've done a great job. The animations are smooth, catchy, and flow. It's cute and all it needs is some theme music to get you into it.

The only thing I'd change is making the help tips at the beginning last a little bit longer before dissappearing.

Can't wait to see the finish if this is the testing phase!

WOW

You have the whole game CODED. You just need to write more worlds. Dang that is impressive.

This game just flows, everything is solid, works fine even on my slowerthanslow computer. What sync do you have it running at?

Control=10/10-Miss Kitty responds like a Mercedes Benz
Graphics=10/10-who needs hi poly when you're stylish?
Music=8/10-that's the only thing lacking, variety, but it's still good!
Presentation=9/10-just get an intro screen and stop kitty from falling before she makes it across and you've got the next big hit to come from the DB community

Color me stunned , thanks for all the comments! I was bracing myself for reports of 5-10 fps and weird crashes, although those may be around the corner. But oops, ignore the control key! I should’ve disabled that… jumping does not work in the slightest.

I say not even close to complete because I’ve got a stack of game elements to finish up… moving platforms, pushable objects, a few different hazards, plus some more gimmicks like the shovels.

@ JessTicular: I hadn’t noticed the issue with the camera until you mentioned it… needs to pull back faster when Miss Kitty is moving towards the camera. That overlapping-monsters problem is on my to-do list, but I keep ignoring it… I’m not using any collision detection, sorta wrote my own oversimplified version, and it spazs with multiple randomly-moving objects.

@ Rknight: Yeah, the help pop-up only stays up if Miss Kitty stands still in the circle; I probably need to make a larger hot-zone. I can’t claim credit for the name though, Miss Kitty Fantastico actually appeared in several eps of Buffy (and she even has her own fan club, ).

@ Bear Crazy Donut: The default sync is 35 at resolution 640x480 (although screen fps() seems to lie). When I get the options menu working, I’m going to let the user adjust the sync rate along with screen resolution, in case the game runs too fast/slow.

@ Karlos: Wow, thanks!

Very slick, jumping does seem to work, although it looks like your going to fall off but then places you back on solid ground

Verdict :
- Your game is simply <<Wonderful>> <<Excellent>> <<WOW!>>

- I think you should add some light fx and it can really become a <<Top of the Top>> game.

finished the 6 levels ( and the bonus level too )

Can't wait to see more from your game !!!

Very Sweet! I think Freddix may have meant to say "terribly good" . I really liked the feel to it. I think that the stars when you collect stuff could possibly fade away using "set alpha mapping on". I also noticed that camera problem. Keep up the good work! You should add loads more little features like the falling spades and crumbling blocks , like moving blocks maybe? You could also add multiple levels of blocks maybe, but don't overcomplicate it, I like the simplicity of it at the moment.

heh ? What do you want to tell with that ???

I found his game really excellent ( I love that kind of games )
the game is playable except some small bugs when you use run key, the cat go through the tombs or walls ...
for example, in bonus level if you turn up and immediatly use run, you go directly on the case on top ... without falling in the hole ...

Superb! and it doesn't matter that I'm a die-hard Buffy fan either - this is just a great little game. The starting levels are a bit easy, but it leads you into it well. I only wish you had built more of it! The later levels were great. Some interesting "bugs" though:

When you go into the rooms to get the candles, you can press jump and walk around the walls

When you jump over a chasm, it seems to play an animation of the cat falling away into space before landing on the other side

Constant frame rate of around 40 fps.

Cheers,

Rich

@Hamish McHaggis & HexGear :
Sorry ... In france "Terrible" has 2 meaning .... terrific and excellent ... 2 opposites ... I wanted to tell "Excellent" of course

I've just modified the word so no one can misunderstand

PS to author : I tried it in 1024x768 and frame rate was too high ... game run too faster at this display size.

Lol, terrific and excellent both mean the same thing . You probably wanted to say it means "terrible" and "excellent". Anyway, I shouldn't nit-pick, your far better at english than I am at french .

Great work!!

This game is like a cross between Tito and Cemetary Cat.. Nice job of building upon the ideas in this community!

I only wish there was some more intensity to the gameplay on later levels.. better AI for the enemies and more challenging puzzles in the level layout would really be nice.

Wow, this is amazing. I just love these styles of games and you've done a great job with it.

I also admire the graphical style of the game.

I can't wait for a full version, keep it up!

Well good enough to be published, the end product should be submitted to a publisher, I for one would part cash to play this game.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, suggestions, and especially finding these bugs!

Harder levels and some puzzle elements are on the way; I intentionally wanted to start off slow, introducing a new feature or such to each level. I might revise that to move along a bit faster and get to the challenging stuff sooner.

@ Freddix, et al… I figured from the context that “terrible was like saying “bad in the US, which also means good. Oops, running at 1024x768 still needs work; I adjust the animations and such based on resolution, but have only really tested at 640x480 and 800x600… mainly because I have a sad slow little PC.

@ Yarbles: You found me out… heavily influenced by those two games, especially Tito. And I’m even more impressed with other people’s work around here now that I’m finally grasping how many hours (months, years) go into game development

Thanks all! Okay, back to work for me… hope to have more soon!

I remember playing the DBC version of this game, it was really impressive! nice to see you've made the switch to DBPro- your timing couldn't be better, there will be some important updates / bugfixed coming in the next few months.

Very Cool. I like it except I can't see parts of the menu. It is out of the screen. I don't think my computer like 640 by 480. But the game is awesome

[edit] Yes I just found out how to change resolution I can see the whole screen now but I get 75 FPS and everything moves really fast. It is even more fun like this lol.

just played it and gotta say... i'm sorely disappointed
why?

because you've omited all of the original DB levels
i thought they were much better, like pushing the coffin to get through a shed and rescuing the kittie kats.

that said the engine is much smoother now and definately more than playable now
dbp has made the world of difference here; just hope you have alot more planned in terms of level design and features, cause this now has alot of potencial ^_^

Yep, have to agree. Great game.

My only bad comments have already mentioned:

1) When you do a big jump over a hole it looks like you falling but then you are placed correctly on other side. Just looks silly.

2) Jumping off edge of map and walking around edges.

Love the cat. Love the great animations of the crumbling floors. Love the way you push the shovels to make a path.

I really should get on and write a game myself.

This is just the beginning, there is still a lot more to come. But I’m going to keep my mouth shut until I have the download to prove it.

The game is/will be free. Just doing this for frustration… um, I mean fun. Probably going to release the source code after I get a bigger chunk finished, since I usually lurk and have never actually posted anything useful here before.

Magellan: What are you going to do with my kitty?!? Sure, you can use the model. Done in 3DS Max 2.5, and I also have a couple other versions (one bipedal). I’ll email you later.

Aww this game is cute and brilliant, I love it! Jumpings broken but you know that. I can see a lot of potential for more complicated levels. It has been said before, but this is easily good enough to charge for when you've finished it, why not send it to a budget publisher like they did with Tito? Anyway, stella effort mate, just plain cool

Not everyone is here just to make cash. Skwirle has been working hard for about a year in DB Standard now in DB Professional to create this.

He has done the sensible thing, taken his time and is making a fun game. It's silly for everyone to think 'wow, lets make some cash from people' as they forget what Skwirle hasn't, to make it a fun and enjoyable game to play.
