Megatokyo! American manga rocks.

I rotate my anime collection with my friends so the list is random. I have a lot of series sets in Japanese with subtitles. My son collects manga so technically I only own the two Megatokyo books and some assorted New Type magazines.

Anime is the reason Japan is such a violent place these days, their unstrict rating system and the plethora of bloody cartoon animations or mangas do nothing but mislead children into believing violence isn't a serious issue.

Normally I'm against such a viewpoint and detest anyone that says it's true but there's an overwhelming evidence in favour of this view. Take a step back in time 30 years, Japan was almost crime-free, it was one of the least-violent places in the world. Now back to the present, just last week there was an 11 year old girl who slashed a class mate's throat with a knife (honestly, how many times do you see something like that in an Anime? All the bloody time). This isn't a one-off case though, this is just one in a long string of murders by children in Japan's schools.

I think the main problem with their system is that they allow uncensored shows to be viewed to young children all the time, I mean, it's what they show on TV over there, there's nothing else to watch. This is why children are being influenced from such a young age, if they were at least 13 then they would already have an idea of morals and what's right and wrong and shows like that wouldn't have as much of an effect but it's the little kids that are watching these things which are causing the problem.

It's too late now, the loop has begun again. I hope you're happy now that you've unleashed an enternal evil of reliving the same events over and over again on us all. Now all we can do is sit back and watch the "Post your desktop", "How old are you?" and "Which is better: Lima Beans or sour grapes?" threads all roll in again.

I normally like any anime out there. But some of them I really hate:
Dragon Ball z/gt
Sailor moon
Digimon
Pokemon
Bayblade (We need a puking smilie)

There are other animes that are ALOT better:
.hack
Love hina (much better alternative to sailor moon)
Helsing
Cowboy Bebop
And animes that aren't series:
Ghost in the Shell
Metropolis

I get told off when i make posts longer than the rest of the thread put together
Surfice to say, i have a rather extensive Japanimé and Manga collections...

though i'm not a nutball who goes around doing what's in the cartoons or dressing up like my favourite characters (mainly cause skin tight suits with D cups fits me too snugly )

People can attribute Japan's modern problems with alot of things cartoons is just another thing; you ever seen any asian movies (Chineese/Japanese) other than Animated and well it really isn't hard to see that if movies are to blame, the live action ones are hardly blamless.

(there is more behind Japan's scenes than what is on the level of animated films though, particularly as censorship there is actually pretty high as there are 2 versions of the cartoon made; Daytime Censored and Night-time uncensored ... probably best to sit down and get facts straight before jumping to conclusions; saying Japan has no sort of censorship is just beyond a joke really because they do it just isn't quite in the same way as American/Australian/British is done; and why should it, they have a totally different culture.)

Excellent! Lots of people like me who can't stand anime/manga/japanese animation in general. The only thing I ever sort of liked that was related to that entire style is probaly Egoboo.

actually, hentai is not really Animé. The word, I think, translates as "pervert". So even a PlayBoy magazine could be considered hentai, I suppose.

Let's see. I've got a large collection of games, some with fan created translated patches.

I've got the complete Video Girl Ai manga in Japanese and English, and the anime.

Onegai Teacher manga/anime
Chobits anime
Excel Saga anime
Vampire Hunter D anime
DNA2 anime
Fruits Basket anime
Outlaw Star anime
Cowboy Beebop anime
Mahoromatic

You know the classics.

And a bunch else. But those are tops.

I tend to like the Please! series and the VG Ai series for the art especially, the manga-kas did a good job.

I'm not Japanese enough to know how much trouble anime/manga has caused to the culture, but it's legitimate issue that causes problems, as is all unregulated TV/media/entertainment a problem. I'm sure all of the shows above and others would do just fine with a little censorship/rediting and improve things and have a better influence.

Certainly however there're other cultural problems too, such as corporal punishment being taken out of schools, the new 'parasite' culture amongst young women so that they don't want to marry anymore, etc. Western culture's influence has probably done more harm than a lot else.

As raven, my Anime and Manga collection is extensive, but my personal favorites in it are:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Hellsing (the one about Alucard and the Hellsing org, not the recent american rip-off movie)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC (which i am missing a DVD of... bastards never sent it)
Cyber City Oedo 808 (offensive as hell, but still cool)
Tekkaman Blade I and II
Gun Smith Cats
Dominion Tank Police
New Dominion Tank Police
Patlabor I II and III (recently got #3, awesome movie)

But yeah that dosen't even include my Gundams or anything to that matter.

Go watch Battle Royale. Its a interesting japanese movie. You will find it very bloody and differet. Instead of Adults killing each other its like 15-17 year olds killing each other on a island. And its not animated and the Assisdant Director made Adult movies after that.

that's normally due to poor english dubbing on the part of american distributers.

and yes, battle royale is a fantastic movie, interesting really, but then beat takeshi is amazing. my sis is reading the book and she says its even better then the movie, more character development (understandable, since it's around 600 pages). ok, now on to my collections (actually my sister's and mine combined:

anime:
Cowboy Bebop - whole series
Knockin' on Heaven's Door: Cowboy Bebop the Movie
Serial Experiments Lain - whole series
Haibane Renmei - vol. 1
Neia Under 7 - vol. 1
Patlabor the Movie III
Blood II: The Last Vampire
Many Ranma 1/2 tapes and DVD's, and all three movies
Gasaraki - vol. 1
Grave of the Fireflies
Maison Ikkoku - vol. 1,2,3

Manga:
Several Ranma 1/2
Fushugi Yugi
Maison Ikkoku
Uzumaki
Petshop of Horrors
Fake
Priest
Sorcerer Hunters
Lupin the III
BB Explosion
Chobits

i think that's it, most of the manga is my sis's though.

[rant] You can't blame the Japs if their "crap" enters the US. The Americans imported anime from the Japs. Then it was dubbed in English, by Americans. So if you say it sucks, well it's not the Japanese' fault. Anime may have violence going to the extremes, but don't tell me that the Japanese made The Simpsons and South Park, all that racist, discrimination, and cursing stuff. [/rant]

Back on topic, I find the Monster manga pretty good. I also have most of the Love Hina manga (but IMO the anime isn't half as good, didn't give the characters as much depth as the manga). I'd be watching Ghost in the Shell SAC more often, if only it wasn't aired only during Thursdays and at 11 pm in the evening. And I have the Gundam Endless Waltz vid too. But the biggest collection I would have would be the CG'ed art of my fav Japanese artists (ie. Penzen).

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't The Simpsons canadian?

And furthermore, we certain can blame their society. The US certainly has a market for it, and that's bad enough, but it dosen't originate here. The Japanese society right now is monumentally screwed up, so much I can't really say how on this forum. Of course, we're all heading in that direction too, the way things are going...

yea, the simpsons bag on everything, even fox (the station that airs them). and you're probably right manticore, lol. in my opinion the problem (at least in america, not sure about japan) is that people don't care what their kids watch or play, for example, when i went to see the new texas chainsaw massacre i saw kids in there that couldn't have been older then 10. that is NOT a movie for kids that young. and their parents (well, an adult) were with them. it just disgusts me. i blame a lot of society's problems on the breakdown of the family unit, and not the traditional family unit, i mean any kind of family, i don't care single parent or gay or straight or whatever.
