***NOTICE - THIS THREAD HAS BEEN EDITED FOR CONTENT BY ITS CREATOR***

DarkTOPIA Is The World... DarkLINK Gets You There

Welcome to the official DarkLINK thread. DarkLINK is the client application for the ongoing project: DarkTOPIA. This thread is where you can keep up to date on the development of the DarkLINK Client. Here you will be able to download each incarnation of the client application as it progresses, and provide feedback, criticisms, and suggestions. This is an ongoing projetct for the community.

The only thing we ask is that this thread be used for only things pertaining to the CLIENT application, DarkLINK. If you have suggestions for the project, that are not specific to the client app, or if you are unsure, please post them in the General forum thread: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=35432&b=2 - thanks very much

Not sure if this is answered but, is this going to have multiple rooms, or just one, big dome thing?

Firewalls can stop messages getting through because they delay it somewhat. Hence the timeout setting which you can change, if you set it high enough, you wont need to turn off your firewall.

UPDATE:

DarkLINK BETA 3 w/GUI - Last text-only client before 3D testing begins

Ok this version has a winforms GUI for typing your messages into. Same rules apply as before: Edit commdata.txt for your nick and password *use same nick and password if you have connected before*/ if you have trouble connecting increase the last value in commdata.txt in increments of +500 until you can connect cleanly. / You need to give gui textbox focus in order to type and send / you need to give DBP window focus and use LEFT CONTROL KEY to exit cleanly

-Dont mind the system BEEP when you press enter to send a message, its being worked on.
-No, the user list doesnt populate yet

thats it.
let me know if anything breaks

hmm, seems you are connecting but having trouble with the gui. ZeroBlitzt was having a similar issue where he wouldnt get gui to come up but it also didnt crash. I'll see what Exeat has to say about this.

just to rule out a connection issue, try extending the timeout value in commdata.txt (last value) does this still happen?

sorry-
Thanks

Mnem, MikeS

Exeat has finished the gui/parser dll so I will be incorporating it into the DarkTOPIA client this afternoon.

Ok people I lied, here is another text only client with all of the current gui features in place and any known gui bugs worked out.

-User List populates when joining the server
-User List is maintained as users leave or join
-API Beep when sending text via Enter Key is resolved

grab it if you feel like chatting

Manticore, increase the bottom value in the config file. This is the timeout in milliseconds. I put mine on 5000 and it worked fine .

The 3d chat is coming...
In the meantime, come in the IRC. Ask me for details!!.

Does it accualy connect to anywhere? Cause I ran it and it didnt seem to be anyone around, I got a back window with 4 ">" at the bottom along with a command GUI with a blank player list. Does your text that you send get displayed on the screen? cause mine didnt.

Its prob gonna turn out to be something realy stupid that I didnt do.

if you type and send and see nothing come back then you never connected. Extend the timeout value by increasing the last value in commdata.txt. Eventually those settings will be moved to the gui so manual file editing will be unecessary - and more than likely I will build in the ability for the program to adjust itself and retry the connection. For now its a flat file.

apparently you got it to connect
next time type something and see if it comes back on the lower part of your screen

what is the last value in commdata.txt?
the default is 1000, try extending it to 3000 or 4000 and see if you can connect. When youre connected you should see a dbp window with 6 > near the bottom, and a windows form to type into, and your name in the list. If you type and send the message should appear in the dbp window.

type and send messages, do you see them appear in the dbp window?
If not, something else is wrong on your end (firewall, dodgy isp?)

heh, yeah. And say goodbye to the nice 400k zip downloads for the client. Just started adding 3d aspects and the unzipped exe is nearly 7 megs - thanks to dbp's "kitchen sink" approach

Lol, comes from the saying, "You've got everything but the kitchen sink", and that's essentially what DBP does with their EXE's, they link every DLL into it even if the program doesn't need it.

Exeat, ok I have been needing to contact you but I wasnt sure if your mail was back or not. I'll email you in a bit.

101, no we are still here - after the initial test I have gone back to working on a tricky part of the client, so thats why you havent heard much progress in the past couple days.

I'll hopefully have something new by today or tomorrow.

well, we devised a nice Point And Click system (much thanks to Philip for his vectors help) and all was going well until I realized that the PAC system cant be used as is . Problem is once an avatar is set off to do its rotation and travel movements, it is basically "application modal" - simultaneous object movement is impossible with this system.

We have a FPS style movement system that works because each movement is a small step so the illusion occurs correctly. Problem with that system its too data heavy (even with limiting).

I am currently trying to devise a Time-Slicing system

Thanks for the kind words

not at the moment - I guess once we get a version up and running publically we can all discuss the possibility of people building there own places to be included in the world. Its fairly easy to implememnt but we are not at that point yet.

Mnem and I just had a successful 3D PAC demo.
