Finished reading the hitchhikers guide for the first time a few weeks ago - it's one of the few books I've actually laughed aloud about
The movies coming out in cinemas on April 29th. Definitely watching it!
Anyone else going?
Robin

ps. Arthur Dent's acted by Tim from 'The Office' apparently

Mentor! You have the original radio versions!?
Luck you!

I've read the books a few times, and seen the old movies.
I hope this one doesn't leave out anything major!

One thing I can say, though, I really, really, really don't like the way they did Zaphod's two heads. It just looks stupid.

Can't wait to see it

Oh, and I hope that they haven't changed the answer to life the universe and everything! That would be devastating, and Douglas Adams would roll in his grave!.

Jess.

I know what you mean about his heads. I always expected it to be like a branching neck, being able to see both at once, except one usually wasn't paying attention to what was going on with the other.

The way they did his head's weird, they're sort of stacked on top of each other, the non-dormant one usually is stuffed down his shirt.
That could symbolize how he shut himself off from his other brain though...

Gah, no way.

It's clear in the books that the heads are next to eachother, and the way they look at different things and just randomly do completely different stuff etc is only possible with two seperate heads.

I still think it looks really dodgy!

The way they did it in the movie ( from what I've seen in trailors ) is that he has his normal head, then, when he bends that one back, where his neck should be, there's another head... A completely stupid idea.

Also, has anyone noticed where his third arm comes from? In the books it's just below his right arm, anyone seen where it is now?

Jess.

Interesting... I didn't see zaphoid in there. Must be because he wasn't using his extra head at the time Oh nevermind, he's the guy with the sunglasses and rocker hair.. huh. First time I saw him I thought that was Hotback Desito from the second book.

Ford Prefect doesn't look like Ford Prefect--I always imagined his as this tall, crewcut dude with a dark jacket or something. In the trailer he just looks weird, which of course is the point I guess.. only he doesn't look weird like I thought he would.

Who the heck is the dude with all the spidery legs? The vogon's I recconize, they look like pigs in spacesuits. Very nice indeed. Accoustical quality isn't quite good enough to make a brave man weep, but them's the breaks.

Hmmm, Trillian.. nice Tho I never remember her and aurther kissing or anything.. creative lisense? nah. She's supposed to be a trail of dots going through the universe because she got fed up with Zaphod, not Aurther! Er wait no that's the third book... Dang it's been too long since I've read these ^_^ like a month or something.. erHem. In the first book Trillian is supposed to be with Zaphod--he picked her up off of earth when he was traveling intigco, remember? Birdcage on the second head?
Quote: "He singled out Trillian from the crowd. Trillian was a girl that Zaphod had picked up recently while visiting a planet, just for fun, incognity. She was slim, darkish, humanoid, with long waves of black hair, a full mouth, and odd little knob of a nost and ridiculously brown eyes."

mmmmmmmmm...

And since when does Trillian stand on a beach in a dinky swimsuit? Only thing I can think of when she's by a ocean is on the Magrathea Catalog Tho I'm probally overlooking something...

Marvin looks cool

Quote: "Ford pressed a large red button at teh bottom of the screen and words began to undulate across it. At the same time, the book began to speak the entry as well in a still, quiet, measured voice."

I always imagined a female voice in the Guide, but hey that's their decision...

Now that I've said ALL OF THAT, I'd like to say that I'm still going to go see it on opening day After all, it is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.. they can't screw it up that much.

Actually the book doesn't state where Zephods second head it, in-fact the only real reference to it is Auther's comment 'Of course, he only had the one head and was called Phil...'

The third arm from the trailer appears to be right though.
And I think it's awesome that they've kept the original HHGTTG Voice. The guy really has a classic voice for the book.

Quote: "Oh, and I hope that they haven't changed the answer to life the universe and everything! That would be devastating, and Douglas Adams would roll in his grave!."

I'm pretty sure the original script for this new film was co-written by Douglas, and the reason it took so long to go in to production was because it wasn't felt right that it should given his recent passing. (2001 for those wondering)

The Full trailer shows quite a bit, and it really does seem like his style.

I mean I take it you've read his other work, like Johnny and the Dead or Johnny and the Bomb, etc... Not just Hitchhiker's Guide. No doubt some creative licenses were taken, but on the whole it looks like a good film from the trailer anyways.

I'm going to see it at the end of the month, if others want to sit and pick holes they can... god knows why people can't just enjoy things. Sound like old guys, 'Oh in my day, the Hitchhiker's guide was 12ft tall and you needed 16 ogaloops to carry it for you, when real men were real men. real women were real women, and real 12 legged creatures from alpha centuri were real 12 legged creatured from alpha centuri!'

The book said he hid his second head under a birdcage on his shoulder. The 2nd head topic seems to be widely discussed. I tend to agree with what I read somewhere: the two-headed jokes (in the books) should work better when these heads are not constantly visible. Now we can only hope that the jokes appear in the film.

Never heard of an original movie. As far as I know it was a shortish series. I have it on DVD. Not bad, just nowhere near the classic books. Although you have to love the music.

BTW, can Rich paint this forum pink, and possibly in the shape of an elephant, then we can all see it but no-one else can (unless they look out of the corner of their eyes). Good for using in work

I remember the original series, it was about the same time that Tom Baker was Doctor Who, and we had a lot of British sci-fi going on, like Blake7 as well IIRC. I can't say that I understood that much of it, just remember the quirky humour that I liked. The movie does look like my cup of tea, but I reckon it's probably a DVD purchase, I always appreciate films like that more when I see them in peace and quiet (in other words, I can rewind the bits I did'nt understand the first time).

It is nice to see a adaptation that has something to do with the original story for a change though huh?.

Could sworn they're Douglas Adams..
I can't remember, but I think he also worked with Grant Naylor on Red Dwarf; but that might've been another Douglas heh - it's a pretty common name.

Still great books all the same though.

Well I would be thinking more so you can watch it without teenagers behind your throwing popcorn and being noisey through the whole damn film.

Thank you American retarded teens to totally wrecking my Lord of the Rings cinematic experience.. oddly though it wasn't the damn regular teens for once who'd normally make comments throughout, but these freaks who dressed up as those midget things and wouldn't shut up about the god damn continuity or lines that were missed.

I swear if having no damn life wasn't bad enough they have to bitch throughout what for most nerds should've been the highlight of thier whole pittyful lives. :: clam breath ::

Was gonna say, I hope you were jokin about Johnny books, they're DEFINATLY Terry Pratchet!

And, Terry Pratchet and Douglas Adams didn't have the same writting style ( I say didn't cos Adams is out of it, but Pratchet's still going strong [ new release every 6 months! HURRAH! ] ).

I've read almost the entire Discworld series, and must say that they're pretty darned different to HHGTTG. ( Obviously they have different settings, different characters, etc. But that's not what I'm talking about ).

I've got the first two movies of the original series ( HH ), but I could never ever find the last one ( which sucked, cos it left me hanging! ).

Oh well

Jess.

I've read every Discworld novel so far except the latest "Going Postal" and I feel they do have quite simular ways in the pictures they use to describe things.. even though they are in different settings.. I'm not gonna disagree with you completly though as I did say simular styles.. ofcourse they are indeed very different

I love both authors very much.. even though I favour Pratchett overall

This movie looks like it will be great...But make sure you at least read the books once (before or after you see the movie doesn't matter) because they are great...

though i only recommend the first 3...the 4th and 5th books don't really continue the story and aren't as good...

Jonny,
I must say, you sure do have excellent taste

Fibble, I had that HH quote in White-Board Marker on my Full-height mirror for the last few years ( But I don't live at home anymore, so noone's around to appreciate it ), along with a little diagram of missing the ground

You gotta love Rincewind and Vimey and Cpt Carrot! My 3 vave characters of the Disc. Ridcully is bloody great too! and Weatherwax ( although, I liked her more when she was younger ), and Nanny Ogg!
The Nac Mac Feegles! ach!

Wish I had my DiscWorld books with me here at Uni
I've got the art of discworld book, though, so I'm not totally alone

Carrot rocks - but my fave Discworld character would have to be Death, I love the dry humour in the books he's in, especially Reaper Man.

Nah, I've read a good 8 or 9 Discworld books, but not the Rincewind series - I just borrowed Good Omens from a mate, haven't started it yet though, it's co-written with Neil Gaiman and apparantly 'really gid'.

Hehe, expect much cheapness when it comes to the CGI, it would'nt be British sci-fi with a special effects budget now would it? .

Hate to rain on your parade, but so far reviewers are saying 'NO' to the new HH movie. Many of them say the same thing--- they forgot to include the book's winning humour. Sounds scary to me, but I haven't read the books yet. They should arrive in my P.O. Box today

Ah, I disagree. Whenever the reviewers say "it sucks" they mean it rocks. When they say "it rocks" they mean it sucks. They're so hell-bent on avant-garde films that they fail to see the cool things. The reviewers trashed Indiana Jones. The reviewers trashed National Treasure (god that was an awesome movie ) They trashed Sahara.

But you know what? THOSE FILMS ROCK

I've read all the TP books, and they really don't remind me of DA's books. Nope.

Oh, and try the Dirk Gently books for other Douglas Adams stuff. Very good. Heh, one bloke is found dead in his chair, with his head spinning on a record player on the other side of the room. All doors are locked from the inside. Police state it's suicide. Some people try really hard. Arf.

I love the way Pratchet does the humour. It's all the kind of stuff ( especially more so in the newer books ) that doesn't jump at you, rather like when you watch a movie, then watch it a second time and you notice there's a naked man in the background doing the macarena
You have to be on your toes, and understand alot of the inferences he makes. Bloogy brilliant!
Then, mixed with that, is the pure, blunt humour. Something strange just is.

Gaspode! How awesome is that dog!? "Bark?"
If a dog said that to me, I'd scream and run

One of the best things about the Discworld series is how the characters evolve over time in the books. Death becomes more human, Rincewind gets old and "wise" ( if that's what you can call it ), Weatherwax becomes the big name in witchary, Vimes and his wife ( what's her name again? The big, scarey one that reminds me of a She-male... ) both evolve into a working cycle as Vimes and the City Watch expand to new territory.

Great stuff

Glad to see that there's like-minded people about the forums. I think I'll have to start making some jokes in my posts now that I know there's people who can actually understand them

Jess.

i love "Pyramids". You build a really big pyramid and it starts eating up time, so you got to cap it off to allow it to flare, and as soon as you get near the top, all the dimensions turn 90 degrees, so width is height, height is depth, depth is time and time is width. You walk forwards and you age, and over time you move to you left
