Well, the lead singer for Kittie is pretty good. I'd say Otep and Arch Enemy, but they're more of screaming growlers and you really can't count that as singing. But they do a good job of that growling dammit.

I'm sorry to say that, in my opinion, all the bands stated by the person who started the thread are TERRIBLE. I'm glad that Nathan guy who posted stated some decent bands... well, three, in the form of Megadeth, ELO and (most of all, a band who I love...) Deep Purple. However, he missed Anthrax I think, and Kiss, Black Sabbath, Twisted Sister, Boston, and I'm sure there wre some other bands I obssess about who I've forgotten. Listen to the decent stuff, kids!

Oh, and bands had far better names back in the day... a lot of modern bands have inspired me to make a random band name generator on darkBASIC (it'll save new bands drawing out random verbs, nouns and adjectives out of a hat).
"

If i listed all the bands i liked id be there for ever. Youll be happy to know that I do like the bands that I forgot

I like SOAD, but the lyrics don't bare thinking about!...

'my **** is much bigger than yours, my **** can walk right through the door, with a feeling so pure, it's got you screaming back for more'

WTF! - damn good track and some really funny lyrics but WTF!

The BYOB track is awesome, that hook with the old 80's revamp chorus is very hard to resist. Mezmerize is the best album I've bought in a long long time, can't wait for the other half of it.

The thing that strikes me though is even if SOAD do get more popular with the kids, at least their current albums suits their style, it's not like they're squeezing themselves into a mould like so many other bands have done. Live have stayed true to their style as well, although I think most of their success was with the first album, they seem to be muddling along without a whole lotta fuss or success.

SOAD always struck me as a really bad mishmash of Tool and RaTM...

And seriously, can you look any more dorky than this without wearing latex and/or dice bags ?

Not that I've listening to enough of their music to seriously critisize. But I had to share that picture with someone

TKFISH> Oh yes, I love SOAD... The three best songs from them I've heard are(IMO) Deer Dance, Toxicity, and BYOB.

NoFX kicks arse as well, I've only really heard their new album, but it's awesome.

Oh, and Bad Religion, I have about 4 of their CDs. I love 'em.

1) The old Greenday Music (their new music is too much pop)
2) The old Linkin Park Music (the new with Jay Z isnt good)
3) Good Charlotte (little too much pop)
4) Simple Plan (they pretend to be punk-rock.. pi$$es me off when its punk-pop)

Conclusion: I hate pop

Well... Apparently, the singer of SOAD was once an Opera Singer!

Deer Dance is a good song...
Hell, the entire Toxicity albumn is good. But I say again that most of the lyrics are just stupid

Bands with good female singers:

I really like Jenny of Rilo Kiley / Postal Serive and Emily of Metric / Broken Social Scene's voices. Oh, and the girl from Garbage, she's a good singer.

Some music I've been listening today, according to WinAmp, during my day off work! (Dumbo and Cool working day, music needed!)

Radiohead, KidA
System of a Down, Mezmorize, Steal this Album
Linkin Park, Reanimation
Jeff Wayne, WOTW, The Artilleryman
Jazz CD which doesn't have name
Moby, Play
Hans Zimmer, Gladiator soundtrack
ALIEN trilogy soundtrack
Hans Zimmer, Last Samurai soundtrack
Eric Prydz, Call on me ...

I get really annoyed at people who get hot under the collar about what other people like, as if they have the definitive taste in music or people who are narrow minded about music. Music is music, does it matter if you don't agree with others about what is good? Listen to what you want to listen to,

VanB, as usual, hit the nail on the head.

Van, that track is about Corporate America and how all the companies, and the big wigs that run them are just over-ambitious, and about their egos etc... If you listen to the rest of the song carefully, it goes on about -

Quote: "We're the regulators.. let us regulate... We're, cool... in denial, we're the cool regulators smoking cigaro, cigaro, cigaro..."

It's all about money crazy, egotistical American businessmen who run the world according to their egos while smoking cigars and being well endowed.

I'd rather listen to that in any case than songs about teenage EMO's feeling sorry for themselves about nothing ^_^

Quote: "Oh, and the girl from Garbage, she's a good singer."

I couldn't agree more, Mattman - and the girl from Track 6 of Massive Attack's 100th Window Advance album has a really great voice too, ( This song is better known as that song in Neo's headphones from the Matrix ) !

Personally I find songs about people and real situations that most people face in life to be far more honest than manipulative political tracks which reflect very little on real life.

That's cool, but I just don't find it very interesting, and just kind of... I dunno, pathetic? I can't exactly put my finger on it; it's like listening to somebody feeling sorry for themselves? It just doesn't do anything for me.

I actually don't care about half the stuff S.O.A.D complain about, but I find it a more interesting (and funny) ride!

But again - musical preferance is up to you, everybody is different, and that's cool! ^_^

1) Greenday
2-3) GC / Simple Plan...they both suck
4) Linkin Park

Saw Green Day live this april, they were an AWESOME stage band. Involved the audience, actually formed a band on stage with 3 kids from the audience, all sorts of crazy stuff, and they actually played their music very well (and involved the audience)

It was a FUN concert. Now Linkin Park - they are a HORRIBLE live band. Out of all the music Ive listened to, when I hear 'STUDIO EDITING' the first thing I think of is Linkin Park. They absolutly suck live, plain and simple. If a band cant play their own music, they dont deserve to be respected.

What's that one band with 1 guy playing guitar and a chick trying to play drums? The 2 ppl band. Wow, do they suck, the drummer more so than anything else. white stripes, thats it!

Quote: "Quote: "Musical taste is part of our personalities after all"

That's a good thing. If we all liked the same thing, there's a lot of good music that wouldn't exist. Blues, Jazz, ragtime? If you're a metal head, where do you think the electric solo started? Even R&B has its roots.

I'm sure most ppl would give me crap for listening to Bela Fleck, (banjo player) or the SCOTS.

Quote: "I'm sorry, but I have not heard one good female singer in rock music ever"

What about Kittie? (sorry, im a bit biased in their favor, i got a thing for that bass player)
Bonnie Rait? (does she sing, or just play?)
Janis Joplin?

Excellent!!! First album was simply phenomenal! I saw him play in Cleveland, just after Nude I think. Last year, they were searching for a cellist. All I did was glance in the corner of my room at my cello and say "man, i wish i knew how to play that thing!".

Quote: "Gotta say that System Of a Down's songs are pretty stupid... I mean, they sing about the weirdest things"

And Tenacious D isn't weird? I watched them open for Weezer about 4 years ago. Good concert. And yes, Jack Black is that crazy and wild on stage.

He's right, Linkin Park is all flash production values and very little instrumental talent, which is why they sound flat live.

A good producer, recording system and some decent editing can make anybody sound better than they should...

I do like Linkin Park, don't get me wrong; but they ain't a live band.

Phaelex,
Nice, it's good to hear that there's someone else that likes VAST

And, Tenacious D was set up to be a stupid band... I mean, Jack Black simply could not be serious even if he was told to be by the President!

And, Mold Rat, there's nothing wrong with talking about different bands... It's quite entertaining to see what others think about certain music

Yep. I've read that they came up with some of their songs by reversing and mixing some of their guitar demos. They probably record their parts of the song individually at home and e-mail it to DJ Hahn for editing ^_^ The high pitched sounding bits in Crawling is still catchy though.

As for female rock singers, it's a style on its own. There aren't much of them around, but I'm not complaining about The Cardigans so far (if they count as rock). Come on, it's the opening song in GT2!

Exactly. I have never heard any of their music, but any band who creates a song making fun of the legendary (but way too egotistic) Ronnie James Dio (Look at what Dio is in Italian... that's why he changed his last names to James Dio) must be A)Brilliant and B) A joke band.

We don't think they are fake-playing, but that's the problem, they stink live! Their multilayered guitars in Faint is nothing, it's simply two guitars playing pretty much the same thing in different octaves (although I love faint favorite LP song!) I know that on their albums, they recorded hits of the different drums, then pieced them together on the computer in the studio.

Yeah, we're not saying they mime, we know they play they're instruments - but most of their quality sound on the albums comes from flashy editing and effects - if you took away all of that, ie: live performance, it's kind of weak.

NOTE: I like Linkin Park, and have all of their albums including the live in Texas one and Reanimation, but the above is true.

I used to think LP's music was too good to be true , and i thought they werent really playin , but they really are , an they r good at it .

PS : no song sounds gd until its on albums

cos they have more time to rehearse everythin

while live , they do make some little mistakes

and mike feels sorry for chaz , and he lets him sing some of his parts lol

From a music educationist's point of view (ouch!), the problem with Linking Park's lead vocalist is that he'll have his voice ruined in a couple of years if he maintains that singing technique.

SOAD is fun to listen to. But there are parts where the drums sound almost the same, even in different songs.

I think Linkin Park will mellow out and be a much better band for it once that Chester fellow stops shouting, probably a bit like Limp Bizkit did when they we're taken seriously (Hotdog Flavoured Water).

One thing - did anyone watch The Who and Pink Floyd play Live 8? - damn those old farts kicked some ass!, it was worth the hours of crud music to see those two.

YES!
Mr Townshend swirled across the stage like he was still 25.
As for Pink Floyd, Roger Waters and the rest of Pink Floyd on the same stage at the same time... that event alone was worth watching it.

Did anyone know that Chester could also play the guitar ? Its just too bad that he only played the guitar once in (its going down) I wish they make a song (or i discover a song) where Mike, Brad and Chaz play the guitars , that would sound really cool . I wonder why they didnt do that for (One Step Closer) its sort of death metal .

Can someone find guitar tabs for me on how to play (Points of authority ) ?

I just discovered a new band the other day: Have any of you heard of Mellincolin, if not, I suggest you listen. They rock, their new CD, Kingwood, is WAY good. I especially like the first track: Farewell my Hell.

Quote: " I wish they make a song (or i discover a song) where Mike, Brad and Chaz play the guitars , that would sound really cool ."

if you want a band with 3 guitarists, look up Slipknot(9 members!).

guess what

stone temple pilots
guns n roses
rolling stone (god how did i miss them )
jimi hendrix (and him)
static x
pantera
velvet revolver
tenaciuos d

Ah i almost forgot. there is this a really f***ing good website where you can stream music straight of the internet. No downloads so no risk of virus and doesn't take up hard drive space.

http://www.radioblogclub.com/index.php

just type in a band name/song and it will take you to a whole list of music.

[LiNKiN PARK]
Because there is no bad language..
Because the lyrics talk about feelings or ideology..
Because Linkin Park band has individuality..

LP has only high quality songs.. even when they started..
I like Fuse, Reading my eyes, Carousel, The morning after (underground release),
Part of Me (especially Demo version).. and much others more..
All songs from LP are more than great..

The best thing I see in the quality of LP's songs is the arranged
sound.. the rhythm is very clear.. No rhythm breakings in LP songs..
Other cool point is that the majority of lirycs came from Chaz's feelings..

I hate BoyBands such as Good Charlote and the death Blink182 that
just try to write beautiful words to have more one type
of music in their "curriculum vitae"..

Look at Chaz's, Mike's and Delson's expressions at shows..
They can really feel the songs.. And it is very admirable
in a band..

little bit offTopic: There is a band here in Brasil that is call "CPM22" and
another that is call "Detonautas".. I hate these 2 because
they write almost good songs.. sing all the
sticky (they talk about love in songs) songs (try to play something like hard core)
and at the end
of each one they scream: "And this is it, sh!t" or say some
other bad word and always make self-marketing:
"Yeah, folks.. CPM22 is the best.. it rocks"
Repugnance

going to hear some LP now.. Makes me feel good

The worst foe lies within the self...

I really don't like much of any of them. Greenday particularly gets on my nerves, I listened to a bit of that "American Idiot" song thinking I might get a good old fashioned liberal laugh out of it, but no. It was just awful. That Time of My Life song is alright, but people play it way too often, and it gets old fast.

The only Linkin Park song I can really appreciate is Points of Authority. Mostly because of the cool music video. In general these are the bands that plague our society with crap.

Listen to:

Queen
Styx
ACDC
Van Halen
Sammy Hagar
Chicago
Elton John
Eric Clapton
Huey Lewis and the News
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band
Pink Floyd
Incubus
Slightly Stoopid
Muse

You can't really blame bands for doing some things that previous bands have done. One of the greatest composers, Mozart, was famous right smack dab in the middle of the Classical era, and he stuck to classical because that's what people liked he was damn good at it.

You've got three general (there's more, but generalizations are fun) types of musicians.

1. Mediocre musicians-No originality, suck at imitating others. See: Modern bands.

2. Tradition Masters-Don't introduce many new things to music, but takes what's there and beat everybody else over the head with it to let 'em know who's boss. See: Mozart, Gershwin, Andrew Lloyd Webber

3. Innovators-Move music in new directions. See:Beethoven, Chopin, Prokofiev, John Cage

Music I like! Because I know you all care.

Radiohead - (esp. Kid A, my #1 fav and also Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief)
System of a Down - (esp. Steal the album, but also S.O.A.D, Toxicity, Mezmerize, Live etc...)
Biffy Clyro
Hans Zimmer - (Batman Begins, Gladiator and The Last Samurai)
James Newton Howard - (Unbreakable)
Linkin Park - (esp. Reanimation)

Occasionally Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach and Incubus sneak into my playlists too. Jazz and blues are good too. I've also got a bunch of compilations I like; all the Matrix scores and soundtracks have good moments, and the Nip Tuck soundtrack is great.

I like listening to alot of different stuff, and trying new music too! Anyone else agree with any of the above?
