"kanagroo 2 beta what's the dcs graphics like?"
The worst games are like PS1 graphics running in High res with better textures.
The best games look much nicer than the vast majority of PS2 games - the graphics chip is more comparable to that of the Gamecube, Ie the images are crisper, brighter and clearer on large screens, and don't suffer from many of the limitations of the ps2's chip. For example, Soul Calibur on DC is VERY comparable with the GC and Xbox versions of SC2, and other than a few gimicky effects are far better than SC2 on PS2.
Many great games for DC were converted to PS2 and all off them were infinitely worse, plaguesd by lower poly counts, lower frame rates, worse textures, longer loading times, I could go on.
Essentially technically the System was superior in many (but not all) ways to the PS2. The biggest plus point from my perspective was the fact that 99% of DC games run at 60hz (like the GC & XBox) as opposed to the PS2 which for 99% of the games is stuck in 50hz. This means that DC games usually have no screen borders at the top and bottom, and run at the same reoslution and speed that they do in Japan. As opposed to the ps2 running at 50hz will be squashed or stretched to fit, and be running 17-20% SLOWER than PS2 in the UK.
I'm not saying that games with rubbish graphics weren't released, MANY were, just the same as the PS@. But the best games on DC will look as nice, and often nicer, than the best on PS2
Not related to graphics but the DC also had some other major advantages over the PS2, the main ones that stick in my head are
1: It had four joypad ports as standard, no need for add ons
2: It could go online from the off, coming with a 56k modem, which played Quake 3 very well without lag, and even had a very good Online RPG in the form of Phantasy Start Online.
3: The controllers (pads, guns, sticks) had screens on them, which could display maps, stats (ie health) formations in sports games, and many other usfull things, these are particularly great for multiplayer games as only you can see them not your opnonents
You could even take out the screens to find they had gameboy style buttons attatched and you could play min games on them which you could unlock in the full games or download online!
Unfortunately the DC only really failed because of poor marketting and Segas poor reputation after the Huge flops of the GameGear, Mega CD, 32x and Saturn. Also it missed out on some pretty huge 3rd party games which Sony bought exclusive rights too, for example no EA games, or Pro EVO, and it died before GTA3 was in development
Its a shame what happenned to the DC, amazing homebrew scene for it though as I said, and its easy to develop for as it even has its own Official Microsoft version of Windwos, so Game & App development is very easy
