I've just watched a bit of this programme. Perhaps I am a spoilsport but I find it appalling. The producers may call it an "elaborate practical joke" but regardless of how they characterise it, its still a serious fraud on the participants. They have been deceived and are being subjected to public ridicule. And is this supposed to be responsible television?

What on earth is the Crown Prosecution Service doing? It has a statutory duty to stop this kind of thing.

I agree. I would murder the executives if I was on that show. Thinking I am going to do something exciting...:/. I would end up being in-prisoned for mass-laywer and executive killing. I also wonder where the US stands on this being allowed..?

I think they're the sort of people that'll take it on the chin and be dissapointed, but see the funny side. That's why they had to nominate someone who knows them better than anyone else, so they could ask this person how they'd react to it. I guess we'll see pretty soon.

Did you hear about the show in Japan where they locked a randomly selected 'lucky' amature comedian in a flat with NOTHING except pens, postcards, stamps and a radio. That includes no clothes, food, cooking utensils, toilet roll etc.

He had to win everything he was to live off, using the radio and postcards to enter.

They had him on live TV, with people working around the clock to place the 'black blur' over his privates while people watched him try to survive on competition prizes only.

They watched his joy when after almost a week he won his first food item - some jelly (that's jello to the Americans). Where every item he won he'd play with, rejoyce at, try on, etc etc. Up to and including cuddly toys and womens underwear.

His task? Win a certain amount of money's worth in prizes to win his freedom.

Despite some malnutricion, he managed it after a few weeks. So they moved the goalposts and changed the amount - he was too entertaining to let go, after all.

They moved his flat because people were starting to suspect where it was - and they forgot the one bag of rice he'd won (and learned to cook in an empty can). He was livid.

Eventually, they let him go and his prize was a trip to Korea - it was what he really wanted.

Then they locked him in another flat there and he had to 'win' his trip back in prizes again.

So, if you think that anything we have here is bad - look to the Japanese to see where we'll be in a few years in sickening entertainment. I don't watch TV - and I don't miss it. People who watch it are encouraging this kind of behaviour.

Tinkergirl's post is actually true. 100%. It was in a few world record books, and those funny "Bathroom reader" books. Plus TV, and internet (Japanese, as well). So it is true..but I agree! Japanese tv really isnt horrible, or like a lot of people think:S.

Normally I would agree, but I've actually been laughing at JV, and I'm not easily amused. I think he's doing a good job! I think our inset dislike for JV comes from him sitting next to Denise Van Outen for a few years, making us all jealous.

As I understand it, most of the participants aren't going to receive any prize money - just the few that actually go on the fake shuttle.

Thankyou for your insult. I didn't say that all Japanese entertainment is 'like the bs' you keep hearing from people. I rather like Japan and some of the entertainment it generates (games, Ghibli anime). However, even Japanese fans can admit that when it comes to humiliating 'entertainment', the Japanese take the crown. Between stunts like the one I listed, up to and including the random tentacle 'animations' that they seem to pump out - degrading media is something that they tend to excel at. Is it because their culture minimalises the worth of the individual compared the to the wellbeing of the collective? Who knows, who cares. Their extreme is more extreme than ours.

My bottom line is - Japan has gone further along the path of humilitainment than the UK has yet. But sadly we're getting there.

Reality TV had it right with 'The Real World'. Does anyone remember the UK version of that? - like a flat full of studenty types, having parties etc, that was a really interesting show because there was no 2 people the same, everyone had their own destinct personality.

It's too bad it's gone to the extents that reality TV has, it started with big brother, now other peoples discomfort and mental anguish makes for quality viewing apparantly. The people on 'The Real World' get nothing worse than some free accomodation, there's nothing trying to piss them off in the name of entertainment. I could watch The Real World without wanting to harm myself or others. It's funny that most of these shows end up showing people sitting around doing nothing, like Britain sits watching these unsufferable idiots sitting around - I'm convinced that's the reason why we haven't won a war in ages.

I think it's safe to say we haven't yet subjected people to 3rd degree nipple burning sessions, or driven people around the streets naked in a jacuzzi, informing everyone that the individual concerned was waiting for a prostitute to join him.

So yes, TinkerGirl, I think your claim was more than valid

I reckon Space Cadets is a trick on the UK public. They're either

- all actors
- all actors but don't know everybody else is (i.e. each person thinks they're the only actor)

A friend of mine saw the guy with the afro on a Give Blood advert, and one of the women can be found on an actor's club web site.

That seems to be the common hoax theory .. that it's on us. But how crap would that be? I mean, honestly. If they turned round and said .. btw, they're all actors and this isn't really a reality TV show ....

It just doesnt make sense. The only way to make that make sense would be to actually put them into space (or make us think they had) and then turn around and say they didn't actually go into space, and here's how we made you think they did. There's nothing to undercover to us if this is a hoax against us, is there? Just "ooo ... they're all actors. We were pretending!". Great. Next crap show please.

Nope, this can't be a hoax on us, because it has no amusement, clever, witt or even original value whatsoever. It would literally be totally pointless to convince us something so utterly boring is real.

I really don't like the idea of this "joke". I've only ever once been on a real holiday, and I can tell you I was looking forward to it so much and if anyone had told me I wasn't going I would kill them. Just imagine how much they would look forward to going into space, and how lucky they thought they were. After all, in the end there is nothing they can do about it, the whole world gets a laugh (and that's laughing at them, not with them) and they're pissed out of they're mind. Let's all place a bet on what happens next: They Laugh about it -or- they bomb the producers houses and kidnap they're families'.

I'm putting my £5 on the second one, because I would know how it feels.

You're kidding right? Google some of their shows....

I dunno, it's all a load of rubbish if you ask me. ChavTV. But the biggest and worst joke yet? Erm. I suppose you all missed that Miriam program then? You know the one where a few men had to keep trying it on with this women who looked like a model? For weeks. And it turned out she was a bloke. With all his equipment. Erm.... erm...... erm..... Once the blokes stopped trying to take the TV company to court (because they got given a load of money), basically they allowed it to be shown a year later. And "she" hoped they could all be friends one day Heh, the winner had been playing tonsil hockey with her quite a few times, and was wondering why she was always shy "down below". I mean god, give me crushed dreams about space travel any day over that....

Quote: "If they turned round and said .. btw, they're all actors and this isn't really a reality TV show "
That would be rubbish. But think. What if there was a "tragedy" and the simulator blew up and killed someone/ all of them. Apparently. Then they say it was all a hoax. More like it. Or if the joke is on the ones who are supposed to be the "actors". Hang on, I don't really care... No!!!!!

They took off tonight...allegedly. The simulator is a pile of old metal on airbags and an elevating chassis.

I find it hard to believe they think it's real. They simulated G-force by tilting it back 30 degrees

Apparently they can't show them space on a big IMAX screen in front of the simulator becuase there's a moth in the warehouse. OK, we'll keep the curtains on the windscreen closed then!

No way! Cool. Gotta love it. Apparently the simulator comes from NASA and was used on the Space Cowboy film. They just added some serious high definition screens outside. Hmmm. Cannot believe the studio would authorise the amount of money needed on something that could so easily fall apart in an instant.

How come they can't just look out of the window BTW? And didn't anyone mention that the G-force was nothing like a shuttle? Or did they just pick a load of tards?

I read the screens will show some pretty cool stuff, like a tornado. Why miss the chance? Go Deep impact. Yes. Have the UK go under in a meteor storm. USA and X countries go up in a nuclear war (thanks to misreading UK meteor storm), followed by the earth exploding, and an alien telling them they have to go back in time to save the planet. Ok, so the last bit is the general plot from Odyssey 5 (scifi prog with that bloke from Jake 2.0 who seems to be the kiss of death for any series), but you get the idea. Plus the look on their faces would be classic!

Well, all those plane flight sims etc. use tilting to simulate Gs and it works fine. A forwards thrust can be perfectly simulated by tilting you backwards, so long as it doesnt go over 1G! I was in one of those simulators before, and it was a rally car driving sim. You just sat and watched a big screen and were strapped into this bucket seat. It really felt like you were being thrown around in a rally car.

They've also got some mad sound system to supply rocket vibration etc. I went to a dnb night in Southampton once with a 120k sound system. It shock the windows in the buildings 100 metres down the road, and distorted my vision (by resonating my eyeballs) with the bass when I was inside. If it's anything like that, it'll be loud.

As for looking out the window, I dont think there are any. There's just front windows for the pilots that have shutters. I think they'll open them tonight when they've killed off the insect hazard.

I dunno why, but I am finding it entertaining. I know people are saying its cruel, but I don't think it is that bad. They're getting a load of money (all of them), and they're given training at the real Stars training site and a zero gravity flight at the end anyway. I'm quite into psychology, and I find it interesting how possible it is to make people believe things that are so unbelievable.

Ok, but how about continuingly going upwards like in a shuttle launch? Or do they fake "turbulance" so it can settle back a bit for tilting forwards again? I guess if you are totally blasted by noise and total random heavy shaking then you could be confused enough.

Quote: "I find it interesting how possible it is to make people believe things that are so unbelievable"
Probably because it is human nature to want to believe in something we really want. And then it doesn't matter if it's really real or not. Also this example is not that unbelievable (they could really have sent them to Stars for example - it would have cheaper), and it's something they would really really want to do. Hmmm, just thought, would be mildly amusing to find out they have actually been at Stars all this time and *really* went up in the shuttle, and all the rest of the mucking around was to fool us. Probably cheaper.... Hmmm, then it would be really interesting how we would really want to believe that there are stupid enough people to believe in something totally unbelievable..

They've covered their backsides with all this stuff. They told them they're in a special shuttle that takes off like a plane and spirals upwards and leaves orbit that way. It's not a vertical take off, so they didn't have to simulate constant vertical thrust. Because they're effectively fairly level, they just tilt the ship back to simulate acceleration.

I agree though, when you want to believe something, you can convince yourself. That explains the whole UFO stuff and other unbelievable phenominons that people convince themselves are true. Yeah, this one is moderately believable, as they are doing something that has become fairly routine. I wonder how long they can drag this out for before it gets tedious.

I've now reached the view that it is a spoof of some description on the TV audience. Something about the supposed "friends" and "family members" that were interviewed this evening didn't ring true. I was also suspicious about the burger comments.

Incidentally, my friend at the CPS believes, as I suspected, that otherwise various offences would be being committed, including conspiracy to defraud and offences under the Theft Acts.

Finally, the Yank pilot looks a bit like the forums' very own Wolf.

Hmmm. Can you defraud someone if they're not giving you any money? And they never signed any contracts about going into space. In fact, they probably signed a disclaimer at the start saying they wont hold CH4 responsible for any blah blah blah. Ch4 would've covered their backsides for sure.

I still don't believe it's a hoax. If they turn round and say it is, I won't be surprised, I'd just be dissapointed because the only way a TV hoax can be played against the viewers is if we'd all be entertained by it, and find it funny and think it was clever. They're supposed to entertain us with these things, so if they hoaxed the viewers, we'd have to find it entertaining when we found out. It just can't be a hoax on us, because that'd be the most tedious hoax, and therefore pointless programme, of all time.

The "biggest hoax" claim must just be the space thing. To get people to believe they're going into space is a big undertaking, so I'm happy that's the "big hoax".

If it's real (ie. as they say to us), then I really hope they fake a major mishap. Then have the hatch start to shake before finally blowing off with some minor explosion effect. Worth it to see them totally losing it for a split second

Saw a couple of minutes tonight. There is like a glass panel between them and the pilots (and the only "outside" view). Erm, how did they explain that one away?

Didn't they get the people by interviewing a bunch of people under the pretense that they were auditioning for a realative TV show and they just picked the most gullable? Thats what I heard and if thats true then its all going under the name of entertainment. Also, if it is true then they're going to have a number of suicide attempts when its done

Yeah, safety is the explanation for that barrier I think. The real reason is if they got any closer they could see the outsides of the projection and the bloody warehouse scafolding. hehe.

And yep, they setup a series of tests to discover who was basically the most gullible and open to suggestion.

I think it's easy for people on the outside to say it's obvious, but channel 4 have gone into a lot of detail when you look at it. If I was on the show and thought it was a hoax I wouldn't say "stop everything, I know it's a hoax." I'd go along for the ride.

Anyone that intentionally signs up for Reality TV thats wasting good TV bandwidth deserves whats coming to them.

Quote: "I think it's easy for people on the outside to say it's obvious"

Maybe - but they've not done THAT good-a-job. I saw one of the early ones where they kept making mistakes that anyone with an once of interlect could have noticed. When they were trying to convince them they were in Russia, one guy said "most of the special effects done in space are done in England" and the guy in the front of the lecture room said "Oh yeah.. they do it here!" (or something to that effect). Nobody - and I mean nobody - noticed.

These people must live in caves - they were told they were going to spiral up into space. Do they not realise that you CANT make it into space like that due to a little thing called gravity? Thats why we have to use vertical take offs - to punch through and break free from the pull of gravity.

I do kind of feel sorry for them because when they leave, EVERYONE (even their family) will have seen them being publically humiliated and nobody tried to tell them. Not even family and friends. Would make you feel a little betrayed I think. However - the only thing that stops that feeling becoming any stronger is the knowledge that they went out of their normal daily routine to sign up for a reality tv program. They deserve whatevers coming to them.

I think I would be a little suspicious when they asked me to do a TV segway for "Russia's only Gymnastic Channel". That is, if I hadn't questioned the fact that they still took off despite being told they had to be towed out to the runway due to technical problems.

No!!! I'm actually discussing this tripe!

Best get back to my "Be a Brain Surgeon for a Day" reality TV application form.

I thought it was funny they did a count down - then realised they hadn't towed them out of the hanger yet... Thats why they did the technical difficulties (I THINK)

I think they said the whole "we're being towed out of hanger" thing because they had technical difficulties. Not the other way around.

Something along the lines of they had movement but no sound so one of the cosmonauts (actor) made something up about them being towed out. I think.

I don't think they'll be publically humiliated btw. I personally will be laughing at the whole joke, rather than them personally. I don't think they're incredibly thick, just gullible. And you can't blame em for that.

They ARE being publically humiliated - right now!

The joke itself is pretty crap "Lets fake a mission to space". Thats not funny. What makes it funny is that there are people that are clinically thick enough to actually believe it

You can blame them for being gullible just as much as being thick.. In fact, probably more so. Being thick they probably cant help. It could be a combincation of genetics, social background, upbringing and so on. Being gullible is probably linked to that - but by their age they shouldn't be THAT gullible. They should at least be questioning it!

Wouldn't be the first thing I would be worried about (myself mainly).

Because it's not so far fetched (it does really exist does it not? - if you are very rich of course) then I can't blame them for believing it. On the other hand, what a bunch of Tards!!!! Just having Johnny "Talentless" Vaughn on it should have been a clue.

Also, if it's not actually in space (supposed to be just off to explain gravity still existing) then what do they think keeps them up there? Isn't the show supposed to last days?

Oooh, another one would be to claim they are losing air. Heh. Even put a mild drug into the air con to make them think they are feeling the effects Even funnier if you then told them that one of them would have to die for the others to survive. Hehehe..... Or say they will deffo all die, and they have to record goodbye messages to their loved ones. Classic. That would be a keeper.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

As funny and priceless as that would be - I dont think Channel 4 can afford to drug people They could of course actually kill them and decontaminate the gene pool

I was wondering how they got around the "gravity still existing" thing
