Weapon Model Contest

Starts July 10th
Ends July 30th

I'm setting up a contest that will involve 3D model design and creation. The rules of the contest are as follows:

-A MAX of 3 entries per person
Polycount is 2000
-All entries will be collected from here and the Ozark Games Forum.
-Entries can be submitted on the Ozark Games Forum.
-All models must be weapons such as Guns, Swords, Bombs, etc.
- All content must be created by you - no "borrowing".-
- Animation is okay, but will not effect judging either way. The model itself is the objective.
- Models must be textured.
- Models must be submitted in DirectX format for uniformity.
- All submissions must be made by midnight on (July 30th) at the Ozark Games Forum.
-THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON BOTH FORUMS

Judges:

Eureka Seven
JustOneOldMan
KeithC
FredP

Prizes offered for this contest are as follows:

A Banner in the August NSG Newsletter
Keith C's WWII Pack
FredP's Food Model Pack
Jon Fletchers Core Pack Vol. 1

Good luck

How many entries are allowed? Do they have to be FPSC ready?

EDIT: You now,I started a weapon contest a while back (for scifi weapons) were the point was to get new weapons to the community. The submitted their textured 3d models and they were to be animated an setup for FPSC, but it never got that far. Maybe these small prizes will encourage more, but I think you maybe should have some more for like 2nd place and 3rd place.

thats a bit stupid, most .x importers dont work very well in modeling software, would obviously make the format for a game, but if you are basing it on the model itself, as stated, you should certainly go with something like a .3ds file rather than letting the game engine be the show that will be judged, thats just daft

would be a nice comp, i may enter if i have the time (the last weapon contest didnt even get any results back)

I agree with jon here. Surely if the competition was to judge animation, the game engine would be the best place to showcase it, but since you want to view the model itself, then i agree that a different format would be better.

Why not use obj?

It's a universal export format for Milkshape, 3DS, and Maya, and you cant export in .obj with animation.

Cause .obj shows a lack of commitment to the project. I understand having it in .x as thats what this forums engine uses. I'd like to enter but I'm not sure I can get my entry done in time. And personally I'd make mine fpsc ready as it takes what......5 more minutes or less to wait on the converter to make a 3ds file a .x with 2900 frames of animation(knowing guns wouldnt have half this but saying this from char animations)?

you dont have to animate it. we just want to see the model itself. so if you can make it FPSC ready but it isnt needed.

then why use such a highly compressed and difficult format, if i wanted to see something in its fullest i would look at the source (e.g. the .max file, but .3ds is more native to other programs)

very well, volume 1 will be available as a prize if you want, but as i am in the process of making volume 2, i wont wager whether it will be ready

I dont plan on posting till almost the last minute myself. No need in giving people time to revamp their entries.....and my design phase went much faster then expected so I'll be in this.

And I agree still on having this FPSC's .x format. Jon not everyone works in Max....so is it fair to make them convert to our format? The game takes .x and no matter what prog people use the end result is always .x so that seems most logical.

uhh, yeh thats why i said .3ds instead of the .max file, .3ds has to be the most common format in every program, none the less, i'll stick to your rules...

can we make 'large' weapons? as in turrets or such, or something that would fit in a humans hands

It should be fpsc compatible...I mean if this is a modeling contest I'll join one on a cg forum. You need to decide on a poly count. 4 k would make anything still viable, and a high limit(say for jon's turret or whatever). But if were talkin I can do 1mill+ zbrush models.......

Get us a rules set posted. An ez way would be "Must be FPSC ready" not animated necessary....but everyone got the free entity editor. Then in game shots can be posted as well as renders for the community to show who wins.

No point in a 400000 poly gun for a fpsc game. No point in models not in FPSC right since this forum isnt dedicated to high poly modeling....I mean isn't the point of these to not only give a little competition among the members but also so the winners are giving the public what reaped them the reward, be it just accolades or some prize you've decided.

I know whatever entry I give ya regardless of how I placed I would expect it released to the public free.

The number of polygons a model has. Generally an un-triangulated model is measured in "faces"; whereas a triangulated (.X format) model is measured in "polys" (a modeler usually displays "faces" whether the model is triangulated or not). The higher the poly count, the longer it takes the computer to draw the object in-game.

You gave people to much time.....20 days is a wile for models to be revealed 2 days after it opened. Most people are probly like me and only making one entry.

Mines done as of a few minutes ago but I wanna make it into a gun as well( I know it dose not matter for contest but giving the public a free gun is usless if it dont work....my entries going to the pub as I have no use for it).

here's my entry, I realise I could have used the remaining polycount to add some detail but i felt fairly satisfied that I got a fair representation of my idea under 1500. It was a good excersise and a fun project.

May I introduce to you, Bad Bomb Betty, the explosive projectile the whole family can enjoy. Wind her up and throw here toward an armed opponent or familly member, wait for Betty to say her favorite catchphrase:

"Get ready for a surpriiiise!"

Then be blinded my flying shrapnel, fire and glass!
Remember kids, "Just don't wind her up!"

Wetham,
That is cool!
Crow,
That magnum is excellent.Good job.
FPSduude,
Be careful what you are accusing people of.Crow has been making weapons (and giving them away) for a while.I think you owe him an apology.

@Wehtam:
Very original. Very sinister and a great job overall Texture is very fitting for a demented childs toy.

About FPSduude:
He wasnt accusing Crow of stealling...he was asking a question cause it turned out so darn good for a contest where your not supposed to use any borrowed media.

And saying that, Crow kinda disqualifies himself by useing a texture for a gun and not creating his own media.
Quote: "- All content must be created by you - no "borrowing".-"

This would include the textures as well as the model, hence the word "All". No offecnce to crow cause it's a great gun and nice for a pack or whatever but for this contest he kinda fell flat.

I kinda knew it was a image off the net was used...thats why I asked what cammera he used....Since I made all the textures for what will be my entry and obviously Wehtam did too, I kinda felt tweeked that he used a picture(and not even a picture he took). Some of my media looks like I may have taken it but I'll be posting screen shots on how I made all my little details. I made every thing in 3dmax as high poly models and textured each piece individually then I rendered a pick of that and used it in my gun texture...therefore making all the media mine. No images were used...it was all colors and photoshop filters to make every pieces detail......but thats how I took it when it said "All".

@About My Entry:

I've contacted Codemaster about some questions and assume I'll be posting my entry soon. It's actually done and in fpsc but I've got some postioning questions...I know it dont count for this but I dont wanna show it till I can actually release it to the public as well, as a freebie....

sod this am sick to death of people coming on forums and complaining about this that and the other

makes me sick that i give stuff away for free and all i get is knocked for it

yes i used a photograph as a modelling reference image

why

because i dont own photoshop i dont plan on stealing it

so if using a photograph of the net as modelling image makes me a bad person

then sue me

i do this as a bit of fun but if anybody else has a problem with me using reference pics from google image search

as model reference and textures please feel free to contact the original author and give them my email
