Just heard about it on BBC News. Struck by a Stringray while filming a documentary. Was announced dead at the scene. Although it was fairly inevitable that this was how he was going to pass due to his choice of lifestyle and career, I never saw it happening at the age of 44!

He'll be missed.

This came as a great shock to me. I always wondered how he escaped death - and in my mind I sort of assumed he'd become invincible.

Best wishes to his wife and family.

He swam over the top of it for a new documentary.
It stung him directly in the heart
a spine about 12 inches
The whole country is in shock, let alone the world.

He said one time, many people thought a croc would get him.
They were wrong!

Its the third fatality by sting rays in QLD.
most sting rays have the barb under the tail.
some have it at the tip, like the one that got him
the poison has no cure and affects the nervous system.

He will be sorely missed, bindi and his son have a legacy now.
I really enjoyed his passion and enthusiasm and I will miss him as well.

The zoo is two hours north of where i live, We were planning to visit only a few weeks ago but got put forward.

It said it wasn't the sting (venom) that caused his death, but the wound itself. Like being stabbed in the heart basically.

I found this comment very interesting:

"Stingrays only sting in defence, they're not aggressive animals so the animal must have felt threatened. It didn't sting out of aggression, it stung out of fear," Dr Bryan Fry, Deputy Director of the Australian Venom Research Unit at the University of Melbourne said."

In short - as much as I can appreciate the work he did, he shouldn't have antagonised the poor creature either.

Well, we don't know the circumstances. It could well have felt threatened merely by his presence.

I'm pretty sad to be honest because I find most documentaries really dull due to lack of inspiring narration. His are the only ones I really like because his enthusiasm was excellent. It really sucks (though perhaps inevitable) that he got killed.

I imagine he accidentally trigged some defense reflex that caused it to sting him.

I was diving in the Ccaribbean earlier this summer and they told us to watch out for rays - but that you have to work really hard to actually get them to attack you.

I'm almost positive that was the case - but it doesn't change anything. The creature was scared enough to lash out, and he was obviously close enough to be hit. I doubt that combination is a coincidence.

Must have been a horrendous way to die (i.e. extremely painful), and it sucks given his age and young family - but when you mess with something so -potentially- dangerous when in defense mode, surely you try your best not to scare it?! Then again, that doesn't make for great TV does it

He was a quality bloke. Entertaining to watch on tele and one of the few celebrity types that I think would be a good laugh to meet in person. So one of the few "death of a celebrity" reports that I haven't forgotten 30 seconds after it was announced. I think what he did and how he presented was pretty unique, so he has left a bit of a void in his wake. A big shame.

I kind of thought that something like a cold would have gotten him - I too was in the camp that thought that he was a bit invincible, at least to dangerous things. Bit like Unbreakable, and the water thing. Poor bloke - good luck to his family.

I just cant believe he is dead, it was like nothing could harm him. All I can say is that it was a big shock to hear the news. I find it hard to show emotion as a guy, but I will miss him.

To think he was alive yesterday and all those what if's. What if he was feeling ill today and stayed at home then he could still be alive. It's a great shame and a genuine loss. We shall all miss him.

I have been thinking about his wife and kids, Kentaree. But his kids are still babies and wont be harmed by his death, as much as they wouldbe if they happened to be older. It is still a great loss.

Kenatree, you beat me to the Stingray joke...But I couldn't think of a good one.

Steve Irwin was a good guy, I wasn't a regular viewer, I watch the other kind of documetaries. But I don't mourn for his death, it was sad when Dimebag Darrell died, the ones who really suffer are the family, best wishes to them. Goes to show that experts make mistakes and his line of work, you're just lucky if your mistake doesn't put your life in danger...but as you see he wasn't lucky.

Article:
CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement.

Crew members aboard Irwin's boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later, the statement said.

Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program "Crocodile Hunter," which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," John Stainton, Irwin's friend and producer, said in the statement. "He died doing what he loves best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs Rule!"

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Irwin for his work in promoting Australia through projects such as "G'Day LA," an Australian tourism and trade promotion week in Los Angeles in January.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," Downer's spokesman Tony Parkinson said.

Irwin's dedication to conservationist causes led him to become a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program "A Current Affair" that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me."

However, Irwin had also received negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his month-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Eugene, Ore., and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

The couple met when she went on vacation in Australia in 1991 and visited Irwin's Australia Zoo; they were married six months later. Sometimes referred to as the Crocodile Huntress, she costarred on her husband's television show and in the 2002 movie, "The Crocodile Hunters: Collision Course."

Stingrays have flat bodies and tails with serrated spines, which contain venom and can cause cuts and puncture wounds. The creatures are not aggressive and injury usually occurs when a swimmer or diver accidentally steps on one.

Edit!

O my goodness I just remembered my dream! I had a dream that I was swimming in a warm watered ocean. Then went down into a reef like thing. Then I was swimming and and I got pushed into somthing that hit me in the chest and I woke up. That was VERY VERY odd.... I never remember my dreams....this is just freaky...

While I do feel bad about his death, I have to say he had it comming and don't feel THAT bad. Anyone stupid enough to do the things he did...

No matter what you think of him personally, you cannot deny that he did a huge amount for conservation and for the tourist industry of Australia. His personality was huge and he obviously loved what he did very much. If he hadn't been so brash and done the crazy things he did then you would never have heard about him or his great work.

It wouldn't work - the stingrays need to feel threatened in order to attack. They'd most likely swim around laughing.
