Ok,
How many of us have installed Vista today, using it already or intend to upgrade soon?

that, and enough time to work out all the stupidity that I am sure will exist. I just switched to XP not too long ago (about 8 months or so)

no, no and no again.

XP is just fine for me. I'm getting old now and so playing DX10 only games that require Vista is not really that important. There's still plenty of life for XP for many years to come.

I ordered my free upgrade to Vista for my laptop. Until the price is reasonable and most bugs are worked out though, I won't be getting it for my desktop. The price is ridiculous... I doubt these express upgrades to vista are actually like buying Vista. It's probably some lame recovery style disc isn't it?

Doubt I'll get it just yet, I'm going to look at what money priorities I will have when I get a job and what I need, that will decide whether I go MacBook, MacBook Pro or PC Laptop, if I go PC, I'll probably go Vista. But at the moment, my system isn't exactly on talking terms with XP, let alone Vista.

No, no and no. I am waiting for it to come pre-installed on my next laptop purchase. I have used it, but I don't have it or actively use it.

I am sure I will be building another computer in the next 6 months and I am just going to put xp pro on it. I see vista as a nice to have not a need to have purchase.

I read that the upgrade requires you to have a previous version of Windows *already installed* before installing. Previously Windows upgrades required a previous Windows disc to verify.

That is a pain.

Maybe I'll get Vista when I upgrade/get a new computer.
I tried the test from Microsoft that checked to see if I could run Vista on my pc and when it was done running there was a video of Bill Gates pointing at me and laughing...
I'm probably going to do what a lot of others will...get dragged into the Vista generation clawing and screaming.

Nope. Esp considering the UK prices (even though I am in Cyprus) are almost double the US. I know we normally expect to be screwed for IT stuff in the UK, but that is stupid. And when you think we speak the same language then language conversion costs is practically non-existant compared to other countries. Only way I would consider it is to buy an OEM version (Overclockers has the ultimate OEM edition for just over a hundred quid I read). Otherwise is seriously daft. If Sony are taking the mick for PS3 pricing in the UK then MS have been taking some trippy out pills for Vista.

Anyways, I always wait a good 6 months or a year to upgrade. Best to get all those "OMG, my system completely crashed and I lost all my work!" moments out of the way with other people first. Esp now my business is on my PCs, and XP is fine for me.

Cheers

so let me get this straight, the industry goes about introducing new and supremely fast bus standard in PCI-E (its not just video cards people), and MS is going to force the industry over to software based sound/audio acceleration, away from HARDWARE??

please tell me I am missing something.

This leads to an interesting thought, was ms against pci-e all along? ie did they moan when all the other companies were joining on? Could explain why, other than video cards, I dont see any standard devices like nic, audio cards etc that use the pci_e 1 x slots. pfft.

My dad and I already worked out that we would wait at LEAST six months before upgrading. Then based on what we've seen from the different versions of vista, we'll be getting the super deluxe platinum gold special version (ultimate?). I will eventually get it, but not for a while. I kind of want to wait for vista SP1 .

Don't want to upgrade and won't for as long as possible. I'm not going to voluntarily to pay for something that's more bloated than XP, and limits what you can do with security protection up to the eye balls. Besides that, I can't really see any features, that I'd use, worth buying it for.

If you want to purchase an UPGRADE version of Vista, you need to know the following.

1) Only Vista Ultimate UPGRADE doesn't require you to have a previous version of windows installed.

2) Only Windows XP (all versions including MC) and Windows 2000 Professional (not server) can be UPGRADED to Vista. All other versions of Windows (3.1, 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000 Server) can not be upgraded. You will have to purchase the FULL version.

3) There are OEM versions of Vista that are cheaper than the UPGRADE versiosn of Vista. They are the FULL version. However, all OEM versions of vista are tied to your motherboard. If you change your hardware, you will be required to PHONE Microsoft to have them activate your Vista.

3a) The OEM version of Vista Ultimate is broken up into 32 and 64 bit versions of the OS. If you purchase the UPGRADE or FULL version of Vista Ultimate you get BOTH 32 and 64 bit versions. You can choose which version to install upon installation. (with vista's boot manager, I believe you should be able to have both versions installed and choose what you want when you boot up...kinda cool).

4) When you use Vista UPGRADE, it's been said that it deactivates (and invalidates) your XP license that you upgraded from!!!. This is the only part that scares me. I haven't confirmed it yet, but I will in 2 weeks when I upgrade from an OEM XP Home to Vista Ultimate UPGRADE.

So if you want to UPGRADE without having a previous SUPPORTED OS installed, then get Vista Ultimate. It's what I'm getting in a couple of weeks.

Also, if you wait too long to get Vista you'll lose out on an oppertunity to get additional licenses of Home Premium for 49.99 USD. Microsoft has a program found here https://om.one.microsoft.com/opa/Validation.aspx?StoreID=b97c1460-8eb9-468c-a120-f41033a7a983&LocaleCode=en-us&JavaScriptOn=yes that will let you get up to TWO more licenses at that price if you purchase Ultimate UPGRADE or FULL (or OEM I believe). The offer isn't available outside North America (I can already hear the whining over that one...). This offer is only good untill June 30th 2007. I'm going to get my family members 2 licenses. 3 OS's for 380.00 USD (126.00 USD each) is pretty good I think.

Not when you're one of the people who had windows already installed when it was bought new from the shop .

As the cheap upgrade is £100, I'm curious, how well do people think Vista would run on a 1.5ghz 256mb ram, 256mb gfx PC in comparison to XP, even at minimal settings? (Probably poorly, but you never know, microsoft may have decided to enhance the use of resources, in comparison to how Mac OS X has)

What I mean is, that's a pain in the instance of having to reinstall Vista in a year or so, and having to have XP installed first.

So Tapewormz (or anyone who knows),
besides the price and the lock in to 32 or 64 bits
what is the difference in functionality between
Windows Vista Ultimate OEM DVD* $200
and
Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade $260
and
Windows Vista Ultimate Full $400?

* The purchaser has been advised of the following license requirement of Microsoft Corporation: You accept the license contained on this Microsoft System Builder Pack product when you open this package. By accepting this license, you agree that you are a system builder (ie: system assembler, reassembler, or installer of software on computer systems). Individual software licenses cannot be returned after this package is opened.

Above is exactly what most people will read in the stores and have read on the flyers mailed to our homes about the OEM DVDs being advertised at MICRO CENTER.

After reading the disclaimer won't we all think...
Heck that sounds like me!
I install software!!
I'll just get one of those SB Packs and save $200.01 !!!!

There has got to be a catch, right? (This is last years license, but it should apply.)

Is someone is being deceptive here,
or is this just a way to get us to feel good about paying $200 for the OS?

I paid $200 for Win 98SE full after getting ripped on that horrible $100 Win 98 upgrade for Win 95 OSR2.

Recently, Microsoft got rid of the need to buy a piece of hardware with OEM copies of Windows, so don't let them sell you a mouse unless you need one."

@Jeku, Hey, there's a workaround for UPGRADE's that will make anyone not getting ULTIMATE edition happy.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5932

@heartbone, Microsoft does not support OEM installations of Vista or any other OS. If you have a problem with Windows and it's OEM, you are refurred to your vendor (ie. DELL, HP, COMPAQ, joe blow computer guy at the end of the street). If you want Microsoft to help you and you have an OEM version, you'll need a credit card and the willingness to fork over cash for help (when what they'll end up doing is telling you to nuke and pave in the end anyways).

The definition of Microsoft support is...someone in the philippines with a phonebook sized manual infront of them...and a slogan "when in doubt, nuke and pave".

@heartbone, OEM versions are tied to the motherboard. I mentined that you will need to phone microsoft if you upgrade your mobo. Then you'll have to tell them why you changed your hardware. They don't always allow you to install on a new mobo, they'll tell you to upgrade to a full license.

In my opinion, STAY AWAY FROM OEM versions. I have an OEM version of XP home, but I've only had to change my mobo once (due to an upgrade). I'm lucky, they allowed me to do this, it's rare and they don't like letting you change your mobo with OEM licenses.

@AlanC,

Have fun playing no new games in the next two years. DX10 will be comming to XP... "never, never, never"...

All these people that kick and scream about not upgrading to Vista are the same people who had the same tantrum when XP came out. If you game, you'll upgrade that's all there is too it. End of story.

See that's a more realistic statement. "I'll get it when I get around to it or I'm financially able to, or when I really need to"

Boldly saying "never, never, never" is just living in denial.

All those people that said they'll never upgrade to XP, what are they using now? XP...

I'll admit...I used Windows XP Pro with the infamous blacklisted key for along time. Then I got tired of dodging the bullet and broke down and bought an OEM version of it because it was alot cheaper to do that. I'm not even going to bother with cracks or what have you for Vista. I'm just going to get it early while microsoft offers the vista family discount. I'll save 60%. To me, this is an effort on Microsofts part to thank their customers for adopting early and putting faith into their new baby.

Something I'm actually impressed with on Vista is that it is only the Upgrade/OEM versions that are Motherboard-locked.
This is great comming from Windows XP, where ALL versions were motherboard-locked; requiring not just a reinstallation but then phoning up Microsoft to re-activate. (Even the Corporate Edition, which doesn't require activation via VLK)

With OEM editions you have no Microsoft support, this includes re-activation. If you want to reactive an OEM, they will put you onto a charge-line over the standard free-phone number.

For now, the majority of people don't really need to upgrade to Vista; and until the new official drivers are released I'd say that it would be worth holding out for a while.
Mind you if you're waiting for the price to drop, then think again; Windows XP's price actually rose during it's release, particularly the Professional edition.

Also it would be good to note that Vista has been one of the smoothest transitions to a new Windows, let alone the fact that it's deeply different under the hood. It's extremely stable, performance wise unless running OpenGL (which no manufacturer currently has an ICD out means very disappointing software support) then it's the smallest drop in any Windows release.
What's more is, this OS is designed to have more going on either cross-network or just on system. So unlike all previous incarnations, the more you're doing the better the system will do.. what's more the more you use each product, the quicker it will get.

So while it has some very good aspects for now, it's still not really ready for the market just yet. imo - this is simply based on the driver support really. The rest of the OS runs and feels like it's already been on the market for a while.
