EDIT:

DEMO FINALLY:
http://www.madcents.com/HexaxisXXIDemo.zip

What do you all think?

Hey guys,

I have been working on this game since Dec 16th. I wish I knew about this competition earlier and I would have had more time to put into it, but I'll still give it my best shot.

I wish my account was not 'newbie status' so I can post a little faster, but what can you do.

Basically, its a very addictive hard (if you don't know anything about dice) puzzle game borrowing features from many puzzle games such as tetris, lumines, bombastic (devils dice, xi sai), block party, and even fantavision.

You have to make combos (6 six's, 5 five's etc) by rotating your die down and left and right. When you get combos they light up blue for a certain amount of time (less time the more you have together). You can add to the combo, which will make it last longer before it turns red (and gets wiped out when the line goes over it). You can stack them to cause a combo (the dice below get wiped and then the new one falls and makes another combo)

I have chains built in that go up as long as you have combos on the playing field. When you don't it goes down 100 per second. I also have chained wipes (wipes are from lumines - the dice combos do not disappear until they get wiped) the chained wipes are a multiplier of 5 for every time the wiper resets to the top (it takes 10 seconds from the top to the bottom)

Notice the preview under the dice to show how the dice will rotate down.

Here is a video of the gameplay from about a week ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh2dFEdEbAs

I'm working on a new video as we speak so stay tuned.

Here are a couple screenshots:

Very Cool! I would have to say that the strongest achievement that i see from these two screens is that everything seems to fit together nicely. From the font to the background to the dice everything seems so flow nicely and nothing seems forced. Good Stuff

Thank you! I can't believe how fast I put everything together. Its been about a month so far from scratch! Tonight hopefully I'll update the video on youtube with the current version. I'll also make a couple more screenshots.

Thanks Raven. Here is a post of my first shot from like Dec 20th.

Its come quite a ways. Haven't really done to much with sound yet though except a couple sounds like level up and warning (like wetrix - robotic voice, I recorded it myself )

BTW, you guys prolly remember me by Rubix Cubix I made a couple years ago. Maybe not... I run darksoft.net but haven't been using DB in a while. Got an idea and now I'm back trying to implement my new idea, the compo is a pretty good motivator I must say.

Bah, I was just playing with shaders tonight.... Is there major problems with set limb effect? Its telling me after I add it that an array accessed out of bounds somewhere else in my code. The second I take it out its fine. Any ideas?

This looks very proffessional. Something you might see on a psp game.

Keep it up. When is it a called 'die' and when is it called a 'dice'?

die is singular, dice is plural, but can be used interchangably: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dice

Thank you Micophone, I was actually thinking initially of making it for the PSP. I got one cube spinning in the psp, and decided to prototype it in Darkbasic before spending an eternity trying to get it running on the PSP.

Ok I have a slight update. I have started work on many many things, but for tonight since it is late, I'll just post the current pic of the playing grid:

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have an updated video on youtube and some more screenies.

I checked out the video and it looks cool. Although it doesnt seem to go further than the option screen, so I didnt catch any game play actiont to feedback.

What gives the game a slick finish it the graphic interface which I think is the best from what I've seen anywhere, it just looks like a complete game.

Hope the demo comes out soon. Need to see if the gameplay matches up to its arousingly superb graphics.

My gf would love this game....

The video on youtube has a lot of gameplay! Its the main menu (drafted, not done) then it goes to gameplay for like 3 mins. I even make sure to game over at the end so you can see how that looks.

If you put a one down it spins the grid because 1's are bad.

Seriously awesome looking. I kept clicking my mouse while it was playing because I forgot I was just watching a vid. Seeing the dice fall is hypnotic. Congratz on making an extremely fun looking game.

Update:

1. Updated the dice textures
2. Made a couple more backgrounds (all of the current ones I've made myself in photoshop)

I was initially using a background from one of the tutorials that comes with DBPro with the earth on the bottom, but figured, since I'm entering this compo, I'm going to try my hardest to make EVERYTHING in the game my own. The only thing that I haven't designed so far has been the font, that is ok to use commercially anyway. I did take the original font and put it into a bitmap font generator and then brought the output image into photoshop and outlined it.

3. Intro for the logo and loading screen finally. Looks pretty sweet. I'll pop in a link to youtube when I make a new video.

4. I have some ideas for music and sound fx, but have not made anything just yet, I've used some from the internet to get a better idea for now as to what works and what doesn't. I do intend on using my own SFX and music though in the end - recording using cakewalk and my keyboard.

Hey Tim, if you check out my 3D Graphics buffet thread I have some nice 'color' cubes that might look most excellent in your compo entry..

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=85258&b=3

you can also feel free to edit/customize the textures, (ie add the numbers 1-6 on the various sides of the cube textures)

anyways, your game is looking great. I can't wait to try it out.

Cheers!

Hey David,

Yeah I've seen that buffet. Very nice stuff. I think I'm going to stick with the dice for now though. I just like the look of them for some reason.

Thank you for your compliments! Its getting close to having a demo ready, but like most homebrew, there are a lot of little quirky 'features' I need to remove first....

Thanks again!

I don't think that is just homebrew. Some gold professional games are a little quirky in the feature section heh. Nice game btw. I can't wait to play it. It just looks fun. The graphics just work. Good luck.

Looking good Tim Will Hack/DarkSoft.
I presume you are the same person and since one of your personas has been around longer than I have, I presume I would know you by another name too?

Anyway ... very nice looking game. I am a big fan of puzzle games, so I look forward to having a go at this one

Hey Scraggle, I haven't been on the forums too much. I was around during the RGT days. I'm glad you like the look of the game. Its coming along very very nicely. I am the same person as TimWillHack (I forgot my old login and made a new one and then of course remembered my old one...)

You'll very much enjoy this game... Demo is soon to come. But once again, I do have special 'features' still present, I've been going crazy over the less important stuff like presentation for a while. Seems like its paying off though.

Here are some new screenies for ya's:

Tim, your game is looking awesome. The Youtube vids you have posted shows that it has what looks like very interesting gameplay. Over all you have done a very professional job. I would be surprised if you did not win, place or show in this compo. I can't wait for the demo, or final version of the game. I'm a big fan of puzzle games.

Cheers!

Thanks Antidote! So far its been all positive feedback. I should have a new video tomorrow of the new main menu and everything playing together. I added 2 songs to the game today and setup fading in and out of the tracks depending on what level you are on. I'm still freaking out though because I have so much to do before the 16th.

EDIT:
BTW, I hired DaZ to do the majority of the music, so it should be interesting

I think it looks fantastic!

It seems very polished and complete, and is most certainly my kind of game. I'm not an FPS fan, I prefer a good puzzle/arcade game and this certainly looks like it fits the bill.

Good luck with it!

Hey, just had a few minutes to try it before class. I wasn't very good at it but it was pretty cool!

I couldn't figure out how to make combos (it seemed like you need the same number/image in a group but i couldn't figure out whether that group was supposed to be a column or a row or either) maybe it said it in the instructions and i missed it because i was in a hurry though.

very nice music and graphics btw!

Ok guys, I am having trouble on one computer (error object doesn't exist) at the very beginning (as in after it loaded everything and now its starting to run the game and access the objects)

I tested it on another computer laptop in the house and it ran fine. It obviously runs fine on my development laptop, but that desktop just keeps erroring no matter what I do.

Can you guys download http://www.madcents.com/HexaxisXXIDemo.zip and see if you have any similar problems?

All I can think of is that the DBPro object creation is working but doesn't get enough memory so when in code certain objects are supposed to be changed, there is nothing returned so it errors out.

I wasn't exactly the most efficient coding this project, its pretty large when its running, but i figured for a puzzle game I could load a crap load of objects and textures without worrying as its not an fps where I would suspect to use more than I'm using.

Anyone have any similar problems themselves?

Thanks!!!! I only have a day left!

EDIT:

I just tried it. It worked, I didn't have the problem you are having.
It seems like a good fun game, the sort of game that I could lose hours to, which has to be a good thing. However, the effects that you put on the dice can be a little off-putting. Maybe that is what you were going for but I would have preferred to keep them looking 'normal'. At least until I knew what I was doing.

That one minor niggle aside though and it is a great game!

Good luck

Hey Scraggle,

Are you saying the effects when you make combos, or the coloring effects on different levels? The only level that basically has no 'level effects' is level 1 "Space Die Vest"

What level were you on if that is what you were having trouble with.

Thanks,
Tim
