You're kidding, right?

They have a count-down for when the trailer is going to be released?
That's sad.

Jess T, this is my opinion also. Only I thought I might get flamed if I said that.

I can understand the absurdity of the situation. Although this is just something to get the hype up. As soon as you put out a countdown to anything that will give you a glimpse of the game people start getting excited. Still it's just a trailer.

It's the first thing they've ever released about the game.

Unless it is a seriously lame teaser, it should reveal the game's location and era, both of which have been kept absolutely secret for years...

I am just hoping it will be in game footage.

The countdown is for when they go public with it, not for just when they release the trailer.

Anyway my bet is on London ~70s.

My bet has to be on Liberty State, based on the previous pecking order. And after I first played the mission in SA where you fly to Liberty City, I was convinced that GTA 4 would go there. Also, "Claude" (formerly known as "the man with no tongue" from GTA3) made a cameo in SA, and there were a number of references and comments about Liberty in SA as well. This tends to be how the Housers have tipped their hats in the past. But I wouldn't be surprised in the least if you could travel between all three of their main cities, like you could in the first GTA games. It would really be the best way to increase size after San Andreas, and it would definitely speak for why they're keeping it so top-secret. But we'd get to see all of the space in-between Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas... that would be awesome. I'm not sure about London, it would be fun, but I think if they're going to the UK it'll end up being the whole island, and maybe Ireland, too... I really do feel like this game is going to be a lot bigger in size than any of us might be imagining right now. I can already see the title: "Grand Theft Auto Nation". How cool would that be?

As for eras, the only places I can see them going, really, would be the 70's (I'm definitely with you on this one Chris), or maybe they'd come to the present as they did in GTA3. The 1970's has a monsterous catalog of music, cars, and pop-culture references, so it's more than likely the best bet (in fact, some were surprised that SA didn't take place in the 1970's). But I wouldn't be surprised by a return to the present, especially if they do end up opening up the entire continent. In a pinch, I could see them doing something drastically unexpected... maybe prohibition-era gangsters, or perhaps a visit to the future. But I'm pretty confident it will end up being either the 1970's or the present.

Sam Houser has previously hinted strongly towards multiplayer and the Grand Theft Auto franchise. In a number of interviews, almost every time he's been asked about the subject, Houser has repeatedly said that he would love to see a multiplayer GTA. I think the 2-player missions and capabilities in SA were trial-runs of what could be an epic multiplayer experience in the next Grand Theft Auto. I could definitely see dozens of match-types -- typical deathmatch, sure, but also there might be races, triathalons, gang wars (imagine the colored map thing from San Andreas, but in MP, where you could choose between the various gangs and battle to control the map)... I think multiplayer options are virtually limitless in a Grand Theft Auto game. Maybe it would even end up becoming an MMO of sorts, although I doubt they'd sacrifice single-player action for that. But multiplayer wouldn't be fun in a massively-scaled GTA without giving connections to dozens... maybe even hundrends, or thousands... of players. Imagine San Andreas with online multiplayer, and how difficult it would be, on a map that size, to find other players if there were only 32 people. I'm very interested to see if this next GTA will have multiplayer, and see how they're going to do it if it does.

Oh, and don't be surprised if you're playing as a female. I don't know why I'm guessing at that, but for some reason I can imagine them going that route. What would be awesome, in my opinion, would be if you could actually choose who you played as. Say they had 3 different characters, each with a different story but somehow they intertwined and connected into one major story. It would add a replay-cherry to a series of games that already has an extraordinary level of replay-value. I for one would be forced to play the game three times, once as each character. As it stands, I've already played each and every GTA game at least four times, each in a different way, so it would be awesome to play it multiple times as multiple people. I can already see people arguing over which character is the best .

Regardless of what routes they take and options they make, I'm pretty sure I'll end up loving this GTA as I have the others. There's always a ton of buzz surrounding GTA games, possibly more than any other games, so I can see why they'd post a trailer countdown... but then the Housers have been known to pull pranks in the past (Remember the big "GTA: Sin City" announcement?). Keep in mind that we're looming dangerously close to April Fool's Day, and the Housers have a dirty habit of pranking their fanbase with false claims and whatnot. I wouldn't be surprised if this trailer was for "Grand Theft Auto: Mars." I'm willing to bet large sums of money that this is nothing more than an April Fool's joke on the rise .

True, but then they went to Vice City Stories, and I'm sure they'll end up making a San Andreas Stories as well for the PSP. They couldn't return to San Andreas consecutively, and there's a lot they could do in the northeast... Niagara Falls, Long Island (and picking on the girls there, I'm sure), Atlantic City, the Vineyard, and maybe even a trip into the creepy backwoods of Pennsylvania (around here, we call that region "Pennsyltucky" for it's "Deliverance" atmosphere). I could definitely see missions taking place at, say, Coney Island, and all of the canals upstate could be neatly implemented

Chris K - I said people are PROBABLY, and no need to insult me. For Rockstar Games, they know GTA is a huge hit, and thats why they put it up their. To draw more attention to the PREVIEW of the game. People log on it to see when it comes out, and keep on looking at it. No need to come after me Chris, because like I said, people are PROBABLY watching that site 24/7.

Pretty sure GTA 1 was in London, not ever gonna be there again. It's already been in London for the first. Then for the third it was based on New York. Then LA, SF, and LV (SAN ANDREAS fault area) for San Andreas, and also Vice City is obviously Miami

No, the first GTA was not in London. The London version was, I believe, called GTA London. It was pretty much the same as the original GTA but the cars are changed, etc.

Scottish development company called DMA made GTA1, 2 and London.
GTA3 was looking awesome until Rockstar bought-out DMA from Virgin Entertainment. Kind of a real shame if you ask me cause GTA3 was developed by Rockstar North rather than the original developers.

Right now all that remains of the original developers is the name for the game. Cause when they made GTA3 they added a "storymode" as the main aim of the game when the previous games were far more open. imo they were much more fun, especially with their built-in multiplayer which seemed to get dropped from GTA3 series apart from GTA3 on the PC which was edited to have multiplayer (still no official MP though)

The original GTA3 was going to be a 1920s Chicago with original gangsters and a more focus on taking away the realism rather than trying to mimic real-life like the series ended up doing.

I still say this will end up being an April Fool's joke. I know Rockstar all too well and I've seen this happen in the past

I still think it's going to be either Liberty State (New York) or they'll figure out a way to do the entire nation, including all three of their main cities and the states surrounding them (Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas), with a number of smaller cities and towns in-between. With the exception of GTA London, they've never deviated from those areas, and I don't see them doing so (GTA London was a flop compared to the other games in the series, so it doesn't seem likely they'll break the trend).

Quote: "Pretty sure GTA 1 was in London"

The first GTA took place in three cities: Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. GTA 2 took place in "Anywhere City," and I've heard that they more than likely won't return to that city in the future. Then there was GTA London, and then GTA 3.

Quote: "Im gonna be pissed if its in the future or something"

I can pretty much state it as a fact that it won't take place in the future. GTA 2 took place in the future (three weeks in the future if I remember correctly) and I remember reading an interview at some point where they said they more than likely wouldn't go back to the future again, at least in the foreseeable future. Besides, the GTA series is known for having stellar real-world soundtracks in the wake of the successes with Vice City and San Andreas, and in the next game I'm sure they'll be looking to license more real-world music as well . My money is all on either the 1970's or modern-day. The 1970's would be somewhat difficult though in terms of music, it might be going too far back for the audience. Then again they did have that station "The Dust," K-DST, that played all of that 70's rock. I'm just wondering how they'd pull out enough variety for multiple radio stations. Anyway, back to the point, the only time frames I can see them going to would be the 1970's or present day.

Quote: "The original GTA3 was going to be a 1920s Chicago with original gangsters and a more focus on taking away the realism rather than trying to mimic real-life like the series ended up doing."

I've been following the GTA series religiously since I first bought GTA (1) for my Playstation close to a decade ago. I try to absorb as much information as possible and this is the very first thing I've ever heard about GTA3 taking place in Chicago. I remember hearing very different things about the game... that they had planned on making Liberty City the first 3D game for a long time. I've read dozens of interviews with Sam Houser over the years and I remember distinctly reading one before GTA3 was released (I think it was in Gamepro but I might be wrong about that) where he was talking about how they'd always wanted to re-create Liberty City as a 3D "living city" ever since they made the first GTA.

I don't think you could really have GTA in the 20's, after all there would be a small variety when it came to vehicles.

Well it definatly isnt going to be in the 1940s because rockstars new game L.A. Noire is going to be set in the 1940's so i dont think they would make gta iv in that era.

I don't think it's a matter of vehicles, I think it has more to do with music and keeping the 20 to 30 audience tuned in. While some of us would appreciate barnstorming in a sopwith camel or dancing the charleston with a pretty dame, they would be limited in the number of pop culture references they could make, the music catalog wouldn't be as fun(ny), the story wouldn't be as easily connected to the others (remember that many of the characters are reoccuring throughought the full series), and that era has been done before (the afforementioned Mafia, Godfather, L.A. Noire, a small handful of others). I think that era can be safely ruled out for GTA IV... but maybe not for the joke that this countdown is leading up to .

If it does take place in Liberty during the 1970's, does anyone think there might be a chance that we might get to play as Tommy Vercetti again? If it does, I'm sure he'll at least appear in it, but I'm wondering if he'll be back as the main character in that game. I'm definitely leaning more heavily toward modern day though, but then GTA 3 was modern-day. Maybe it would be a "sequel" to GTA 3, like we see what happens after Claude's adventures (I almost said the ending of the game not thinking that some people might be planning on beating it, lol).

Interesting GTA fact - when they had just finished the first GTA game they were getting a bit of on-line flak about it not being very original, and being a rip-off of an old Atari game called APB. Knowing I collect all things Atari/retro one of the lead GTA developers emailed me asking if I could send him a copy of this game to compare GTA to. Which I did. Consequently they played it, and figured they had nothing to worry about The rest as they say is history.

My money is split between it having either a 70s setting, or a 90s one. As for location I hope they invent the city and don't base it on anywhere 'real' like New York.

Well all the "fake" cities are based on real locations.

Liberty City = New York
Vice City = Miami
San Andreas = Las Angelos / Vegas / San-Francisco (first 2 games it was LA, but the 3rd one was all three)

So if they do add a new city, my bet is that it'll still be based on a real city.

The programmers had one idea, the designers however wanted to make something "ganster" related. The artists as well also started making the 3D models and such.. if you can find images on the original version (which I've personally only seen in PC Gamer Magazine) you'll see the theme they were going for and what time period it was based in.

Dunno why everyone is always against futuristic settings. I think GTA in the future would be awesome. Get rid of the limitations, and stop reusing the same old formula. It's like all the people that hated the idea of BF2142 .. they just wanted another modern era combat game.

I'm all for originality and freshness. GTA2142 would be freekin sweet. All it takes is for the designers to think logically and not go ott with the technology and you can have a believable, wickedly playable environment with brand new toys to use in new ways, and scope to do a lot lot more.

Nah APB had the proper overhead view, running other cars off the road and everything that makes GTA so fun! You just played a cop that's all

The original GTA was an overhead racer more than anything, not 3D at all. More akin to APB, Nitro, Hotwheels, etc. But of course a tad more sadistic - guuuuranga!

WOW I remember APB.

I think

Thats the one where you were a cop and you had to chase down the bad guys through the city, and find donuts and avoid trains at level crossings. It was awesome.

Quote: "Dunno why everyone is always against futuristic settings."

A number of reasons really. If they set it too far into the future, how could they license real music? How would they tie in old plots and characters? I think a futuristic GTA would be best made in a different series. To me personally, GTA isn't a great game because you steal cars and shoot prostitutes to get a 9mm-refund, it's great because of a number of things... the references to pop culture, the hilarious talk radio and commercials, the funny pokes at the media and government, and of course the rampant plugs of classic motion pictures and cult flicks, from the Scarface-heavy influence all throughout Vice City to Ryder's hold-up in San Andreas. If you base the game in the future, you might be able to touch on some of these aspects, but certainly not all of them. And besides, I think they're original on their own, regardless of the fact that there've been an uncountable number of imposters. I thought it was awesome that all of the websites and phone numbers in GTA 3 and Vice City were real (I haven't tried any from San Andreas yet). I love it when games bleed into real life like that

Quote: "guuuuranga!"

Imagine my utter dismay when I ran over hordes of civilians in GTA 3 only to discover I didn't get a bonus . No Hari Krishnas... denied!

Quote: "So thats what that countdown was for last night. Around 2 or 3am last night, when the 'paid programming' comes on, that countdown was on for half an hour."

I didn't know they were doing this on TV as well... that's awesome .

Quote: "Except the date it is counting down to is a few days before the start of April (29th)"

I'm thinking they probably want to lead people on for a few days and then break everyone's hearts. It worked really well when they did "GTA: Sin City" last time around. In fact, I remember people continuing to say it would take place in Sin City for a few months after that, and Game Informer wrote an article of some sort about the fictional game. An April Fool's joke that totally got out of hand, and I'm guessing they're going for that again

They could make funny commercials on the radio. It's perfectly possible as shown by Click - "(insert forgotten celebrity name here) is having her 12th baby, and husband (other forgotten name) is finally considering getting a job." You just need to think ahead a little about what COULD happen. Imagination is key.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

I already see where this is going. I saw it a while ago. It's going to keep getting closer and closer to April 1st .

I don't know, it says 23 hours right now, that would make it March 29th, not April 1st
