Spiderman 1 and 2, in my opinion, were extraordinarily cheesy. Long flowery monologues, lofty ideals, thinly developed characters. It pales in comparison to X-Men in terms of story development and depth.
In #2 I loved Dr. Octavius. He was an awesome villain. The final fight was epic. However, as a dramatic movie, I hated it. Certainly worth seeing, but left me feeling a bit unsatisfied.
#3 looks like it has some incredible effects and battles. Absolutely stunning. I'll get my money's worth for those. However, it doesn't even look like it makes sense. We know who killed Uncle Ben, now they've changed that and turned him into a super supervillain just because it's interesting. Okay. Then they added black Spiderman. Okay. I am dying to see how they integrate that. From the preview it looked like a bad dream turned real, except the bad dream was real and had a killer sense of style.
So, it looks cheesy but awesome to behold. I'll like it, but won't love it by any stretch of the imagination. They hired the right fight choreographers and effects people, but the wrong writers. Spiderman and Superman both needed what "Batman Begins" got - a total rework to bring it into the 21st century. The SM stories are too old to work now as they once did.
Look at X-Men. They ditched all the stupid costumes for black and cool and understated. Wolverine wearing bright yellow? Hah. Batman got updated. Spiderman and Superman are stuck in the mud.
