Maybe it's something in the water these days, but it seems like people who have a spotlight have been acting pretty wacky lately. Michael Richards, John McCain, and Mel Gibson with racial slurs, for instance. But I was pretty shocked (and I also got a hearty laugh) when I heard Bill Gates' recent CNN interview on "CNN On Demand." For those of you who don't know what On Demand is, it's a service offered by Time Warner Cable that allows you to watch select programming whenever you feel like it; on your own time. There's a bunch of these channels, and CNN is one of them. The great thing about On Demand is that you can rewind things and play them over again.

Gates was doing an interview with CNN's Renay San Miguel at CES in Las Vegas. It starts off somewhat mundane: Gates shows off a Sony media center, a Toshiba Laptop, and talks about mobile stuff. Then they start talking about Zune, and this is where it got interesting. Renay San Miguel asks Gates what he thinks about DRM (digital rights management), and Gates replies with this:

"Well, balancing the needs of the creators to be paid with the need for some ***** to move things around..."

Right there, I was forced to pause and rewind. I don't want to say the word Gates used, but I'll say... hmm, how to word this... that perhaps he means you'd need a really large cat to move things around? Maybe that word has some alternate meaning that I'm unaware of, perhaps it isn't merely a bit of foul language that is sometimes used in reference of felines (and a really good Bond movie). But the interview definitely doesn't stop there, and I haven't heard anyone else say "omg, what did he just say?"

Has anyone else seen this interview? Am I looking too deeply into what he said? Or is this just another in a long line of recent slip-ups from celebrities who mis-phrase things?

I think people should stop worshipping celebrities.

I couldn't agree more. But I also think said celebrities should try their hands at monitoring what they say in public. You know... for the kids.

Oh yeah, you most definitely are, but unless I'm mistaken, you probably don't have children, so the only (big) kid you need to worry about when it comes to 'the children' is yourself

Oh well, people are human and they slip up. The interviewer was probably like "WTF did he just say? Did I imagine it? Oh well-- it's Bill frickin' Gates and he can buy my soul."

True Dave, I really shouldn't care about this as much as I do, but it's definitely funny, to me anyway, that he said it and no one seems to mind. What I'm still curious about though is how did this get passed the censors at CNN? Is there another meaning for this word that I'm unaware of or something?

True. He's got so much money and power that if he wanted to create a zombie army, he could probably just buy it into existence . But he's in a weird spot as a celebrity. He isn't really a role model to kids (is he?), so parents don't care. He isn't a politician (yet) so the media doesn't care. Leave it to a nerd like me to say "hey Bill, I heard that!"

Charles Barkley said it best "I am not a role model".

Not that I think kids are gonna be watching CNN anyway, if they are then Barney must be doing an interview or something.

I assume he used a word that could reference Benjamin's avatar, right?

Well, from a non-native speaker, that still knows a thing or two about how anglophones speak on both sides of the pond, I would say that word can/is used quite frequently in the place of pansy/twit with no excessively bad connotation.

Yes, it could be used to refer to a part of the female anatomy in a rather seedy context... but I hear it all the time in regards to a chicken/spineless person.

Don't read too much into it.

I have vague plans for World Domination

What happened was in France (i think) microsoft crashed the PS3 launch party by having a boat go down the river near the launch with XBOX 360 loves u on a banner. They also handed out chairs saying "Why wait?"

@SSS - That's so not funny. At least use a joke in proper context.

And I highly, highly doubt BillG said what you think he said. It would have been all over the news, as the media love when celebs make mistakes. Come on, you know it's true, as that's why you care so much about it
